There aren’t very many horror — or in this case, horror-ish — video game franchises that have been around long enough to weave a web as tangled as Resident Evil. It makes perfect sense that the situation would get as messy as it has when Capcom continues to take the hoarder’s approach to world-building by piling on one thing after another for just about twenty years now.
I can’t say that I’m very envious of the team who’s been tasked with finding a meaningful place to start building the inevitable seventh installment in the main series. Maybe this is why these remasters have yet to get on my nerves. They remind me of a simpler time, before Capcom strived for “complete global saturation.”
Next month will see the HD re-release of Resident Evil 0 (Jan 19), followed by the latest multiplayer spin-off that isn’t a third Outbreak game. Since the former is a prequel that’s set before the events in the original game, now is as good a time as any to see if we can’t sift through the past with a two-part Resident Evil retrospective.
