The Hunt For ‘The Predator’ Begins In 2018

You’ll never see him coming.

Twentieth Century Fox will hunt down The Predator on March 2, 2018.

Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad) penned the screenplay for director Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

We haven’t heard much since April when Producer John Davis exclaimed that the next Predator would reinvent the franchise.

We’ve been told it’s a direct sequel to John McTiernan’s 1987 Predator, although that has not been confirmed.

I’m just happy to see the franchise go in a new direction, again. Shane Black is an amazing writer/director, mostly because he understands how to develop memorable characters (I love that Tony Stark is the star of his Iron Man). Predator was all about the ensemble. Predators attempted to emulate this feeling and failed. If anyone can get back to the franchise’s roots, it’s Black.

  • Dr. Rotz

I’m excited. I didn’t hate Predators, but it wasn’t a good movie. I just want to see these guys back on the big screen. I’m hoping for a better outcome and think Dekker and Black will pull it off.

    • oh_riginal

I blame it on having Adrian Brody as the star. He just isn’t in the same league of action hero as Arnold or even Danny Glover (who at least has the Lethal Weapon series to be proud of).

      • I agree that Brody isn’t a traditional “action star. While I wasn’t crazy about the film as a whole I think Brody had a strong presence. I felt his badassness in the climax.

        • oh_riginal

Wish I did. To me it rang false.

      • RidleyScott

Adrien Brody, a fine actor, was nowhere near a problem.

The problem was the same problem Fox has had with every other Predator sequel: the budget, the script and the choice of director. It’s always been those three elements working in synchronicity.

      • YoureNoDaisyAtAll

Brody did fine in his role. He actually did a lot better than I thought he would. The failure of Predators has nothing to do with him–it’s the writing. Laurence Fishburn’s character Nolan was actually interesting, but was horribly under-developed and utilized. Guy’s on the planet and survives for 10 years and his only contribution to the movie is 7 minutes of screen time and a quick, useless death? Lame.

Also, Brody’s character had to explain everything to the audience. He knows who everyone is, where they’re from (even which cartel Trejo’s character worked for…wtf?), and just generally seems to know what’s going on more than anyone around him, because the script depended on that.

  • skapoo

I wouldn’t say amazing. Iron Man 3 sucked. Nobody cheered at the end of the premiere and let me tell you that is rare.

    • RidleyScott

Only whole morons don’t like Iron Man 3. Great character study.

      • skapoo

yeeesh indeed!! Only mouth breathers don’t realize the Iron Man movie with the least amount of Iron Man is in fact the BEST Iron Man!

        • RidleyScott

Lol Iron Man is Tony Stark you buffoon. So sorry he wasn’t wearing the suit zipping around for two hours.

Jingle some shiny keys in front of your own face why don’t you.

          • Creepshow

Huh. More people using the “mouth breather” term. Originality is truly lost.

          • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

            moth breeder.

    • YoureNoDaisyAtAll

LOL @ “I wouldn’t say amazing.” Be quiet, as you’ve obviously got zero knowledge of Shane Black’s career other than what’s mentioned in this blurb. This is the guy who WROTE Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad, The Last Boyscout, The Long Kiss Goodnight; all of which are great, 3 of which are among the best action movies of the time. If anyone can get us back to the intensity and terror of the first Predator, it’s this guy. Fred Dekker writing the script is a friggin’ bonus. I’m stoked for this.

  • RidleyScott

Shane Black directing this already makes it better than four other Predator movies before it begins.

  • BillH

    Predators was good.

  • Joey J

I have a good feeling about this. Also because it will be released on my 38th birthday lol and that finally after 30 years can possibly see a very good Predator. I remember me and my friends would get all our toy guns, canteens, and camouflage clothing and head to the woods to catch a Predator lol (not the pedofiles)

    • Michael Crosby

    • RidleyScott

  • Adam C.

Shane Black, that’s a shame. Pretty bad as a writer and director. Iron Man 3 could have been so much better.

    • YoureNoDaisyAtAll

Yeah, he sure sucks as a writer. Lethal Weapon is just such a horrible movie.

Please use the Internet available to you. Things like Google and IMDB. The guy’s done a lot more than friggin’ Iron Man 3.

      • Adam C.

What’s more relevant, a movie he wrote 27 years ago or one he wrote 3 years ago? I’ll use the internet if you use your friggin’ head.

Lethal Weapon is a good movie, but then right after he wrote Last Action Hero. Going by his track record I’m not too optimistic about the new Predators movie.

        • RidleyScott

Both are equally relevant. All of what you’re saying is mere value judgment, but I’m about to hit you with something you’re not going to like: facts. Here we go: Iron Man 3 was a critical and commercial success.

This will cause you to hiss at me like a cat because again, that whole fact thing is just “ahhhh yikes facts get away”.

          • Adam C.

I didn’t claim it wasn’t a success, but I was surprised at it’s success. I didn’t think it was a good movie. What was with the villains? Unexplained powers and motivations. Turning wounded veterans into suicide bombers and domestic terrorists. Iron man and iron patriot suits being disabled by the power of…hot hands? I just didn’t enjoy the movie nearly as much as the other marvel movies, and I think the writing was to blame.

          • Creepshow

This sounds more like a ramble about a dislike for a superhero movie.
            Um sorry, correction:
It IS a ramble about a superhero movie.

          • Adam C.

The point I’m making is I fault Shane Black for the plot holes of Iron Man 3.
I hope I’m wrong and the next Predators movie turns out great, but I’m not too optimistic.

          • Creepshow

We can’t really blame any director that works with Disney/Marvel. They are constantly over-ruled.

          • Shane Black was given a LOT of leeway with Iron Man 3, so much so that he almost ignored continuity and was trying to put in a subplot of a sex tape of Killian and Pepper.

So nah, I wouldn’t exactly fault studio execs there. IM3/the MCU is just not the domain for the kinds of movies he makes.

That being said, Fred Dekker of Monster Squad is the writer, so idk why people are arguing Shane Black’s writing ability.

          • RidleyScott

            Cool got it

          • Brian McNatt

I think they just spun failed powers from their experiments as suicide bombings, actually. People who overdosed or lost control, hence there being no real pattern to the “attacks”. The actual goal was just to make super soldiers.

        • YoureNoDaisyAtAll

Well, he did write The Monster Squad and The Last Boyscout before that, which were fantastic…and he made up for Last Action Hero with The Long Kiss Goodnight.

All in all, he has a good track record, and Iron Man 3 was a solid movie. Not the greatest movie ever, but solid, and hardly cause for concern about the future of the Predator franchise.

You should be way more worried about Fox executives fucking that up than Shane Black.

          • Adam C.

That’s true, if he writes like he did for Lethal Weapon and The Monster Squad and Fox manages to not screw with the production too much it does have potential.

I’m also interested to see how The Nice Guys turns out.

    • Keanu

Ehhh…I think it also could have been so much worse.

    • James

Iron man 3 was really weak but kiss kiss bang bang was great.

  • stryker1121

I enjoyed the hell out of IM3, so I’m looking forward to what Black can do with a different franchise. Direct sequel would be ideal – I would have no interest in a reboot.

  • Werewolf

People often forget that Black was IN the original Predator. He knows the source intimately. No better hands could this be in.

    • RidleyScott

People don’t “often forget” this. In fact, it’s brought up ad nauseam every fucking time some Predator 4 news comes up.

And just because he was in the original doesn’t mean he’d write a good movie. It’s his writing history that shows he’d write a good movie.

      • Werewolf

No. Just being in a movie doesn’t mean shit. I thought his writing history coupled with that fact made it pretty self-explanatory.

  • mike p

Predator 1987. The writing was great but let’s not forget the elephant in the room. Arnold was basically a demigod in the eighties. There’s really no Giants like that these days. And I’m not talking about his physical stature, although that was God like as well. Arnold made that movie what it was. He was the king of catchphrases.

    • RidleyScott

The movie isn’t going to be about roided out dudes delivering one liners. Black is smarter than that.

    • no one cares what my name is

The only comparable star right now would be The Rock. And I could totally see him in a role like Dutch, but he would have to have minimal dialogue because he’s just too damn unintentionally goofy.

      • GunsOfNavarone

Yeah, The Rock has become somewhat of a satire of himself. I can barely take him seriously anymore.

    • Brodequin

The only better thing is his fantastic accent hehehe

  • Frank Lloyd Jr.

Is “The Predator” a sequel to “The Wolverine” ?

    • RidleyScott

It’s the fourth film in the Predator franchise. Wolverine is a different character in a different, unrelated universe.

      • Frank Lloyd Jr.

I know. It was a joke about adding “The” to the title of a movie. Next is The Deadpool.

        • RidleyScott

Are you an alien pretending to be a human?

          • Frank Lloyd Jr.

          • RidleyScott

I laughed way harder at that than should ever be legal.

        • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

people would see movies if they added in bed or that’s what she said to the end of the title.

      • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

but the predator was originally a darkhorse character right?

        • RidleyScott

  • Werecat

I thought Predators was pretty good

  • Halloween_Vic

Awesome, so a sequel to the original? Is it ignoring the sequel after that? I kinda wanted a sequel to Predators I thought the movie was ok could’ve been better. But this is good news 2 years is a bit much tho but that’s just me being impatient lol.

    • wehoaks

When are you ever not impatient?

      • Halloween_Vic

    • Creepshow

Vic you need to breathe a little.
Just like Miyagi said, “In through nose, ouuut through mouth.”

      • Foxenstein Must Be Destroyed

i thought he said “wax on, wax off.”

        • Creepshow

What he actually said was, ” Foxenstein wears a hockey helmet and oven mitts”.

      • Halloween_Vic

Why cause I said I was excited about this? Don’t take the exclamation marks too serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Halloween_Vic

Why? Cause I asked like 3 questions lol the fact that u even said I need to breathe says a lot.

  • Evan3

Ugh – 2018? Please do this sooner!

  • gabriel

hopefully there will be a good sex scene between 2 or 3 of the predators in the steamy jungle

  • Darnell

I actually liked Predators… It was fun, and I liked the cast a lot. I just found the game world plot interesting.
