When Can You Climb Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’?

Now that Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is officially in production with Idris Elba (Prometheus, “Luther”) and Matthew McConaughey (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, “True Detective”), Columbia Pictures has set the adaptation for release on February 17th, 2017.

The Dark Tower has long attempted to receive a film adaptation, often times languishing in development hell and being passed from writer to writer, director to director. But now the movie is in full swing with Elba slated to play gunslinger “Roland Deschain” and McConaughey taking on the role of the villainous “Man in Black”. Additionally, the role of Tirana was offered to Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road).

Nikolaj Arcel is directing The Dark Tower.

Finally, looks like both IT and Dark Tower are finally gonna get out of development hell. Now if only The Stand can join them….

I’m betting you’ll see The Stand rushed into production if Dark Tower is a hit, however, the big question is, if The Dark Tower is a hit, will the be ballsy enough to cast Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg in that too? Given that Flagg is the same across all the books and series etc.

I have to believe that MM knew what he was getting into with taking that particular role.

        • Weresmurf

Let’s hope so, it’d be great to see Stephen King movies in the future linked by one common thread wouldn’t it?

I really do love that modern audiences are not only growing to accept but expect shared universes. Really opens up creative potential for film.

          • Weresmurf

Absolutely. I’m hoping we get a scene with Lobstrosities that we’ll see in the Mist tv show that also call back to the movie, that we see him stroll into the Stand universe, that we perhaps even GET that Meta Stephen King meeting… it’ll be absurd but cool as hell if it works.

    Wasn’t Roland a whitey?

    • Brett Strohl

doesn’t have anything to do with anything

      • PsychoMantis18

It does for those that read it. And can read.

        • Brett Strohl

I guess you’re right. A black cowboy is the most unrealistic part of the series, with talking trains and Harry Potter buzz balls.

          • PsychoMantis18

Unrealistic? You don’t know what I mean. And you probably really can’t read.

          • Brett Strohl

I can’t read what you just wrote.

I read it and over half of it sucked. Let’s all stop pretending that king didn’t phone in the last half to make sure he finished the last 3 books in about 3 weeks because he started worrying about his own death ruining his chances of finishing what he considered his life’s greatest work after the accident. If anything, my worry is Elba is too good for what’s probably going to turn out to be crap.

          • PsychoMantis18

That may be true but it doesn’t change the fact that altering the race of a character is a slap in the face to fans of the books. Same story as Ghostbusters – if you aren’t going to stay true to the foundations of an established property then create a new one.

          • William

The problem with that scenario is you’re saying ” cater this book to the, and I’m going to be generous so we can agree, one million people who read the books” while the studio needs, according to the estimates I’ve seen, to make about 350-400 million off this to consider it a success and keep going forward. With that in mind, our million tickets doesn’t matter when we consider that they are trying to sell 40 million tickets so they will do what they feel is best to take our 1 million established and turn it into a franchise of 50 million. This thing is already got the deck stacked against it when you consider that A. Kings movie adaptations suck at the box office and B. Westerns suck at the box office.

          • PsychoMantis18

Are you saying that you think an adaptions faithfulness to its source is secondary to profit and the chance for half-arsed producer-fucked sequels? (see Ghostbuster’s remake trailer)

            Just saying – I don’t fink it’s a good start.

          • William

Well, when you put it that way, then yes thats exactly what im saying. On your related comparison, I think the new ghostbusters can be better than the original. Sidenote though, I think the original was one of the worst movies ever made so the bar isnt very high.

    • Weresmurf

His culture never played a part of who he was in the books. There was artwork done but that was it.

      • Grandpa Fred

Except that Susannah hated white men and Roland immediately because of that, causing a huge racial rift for the entire ‘Drawing of the Three’ book. Other than that, it had nothing to do with anything.

        • Weresmurf

Easily fixable then, have her then accuse him of being an ‘Uncle Tom’ with his attitude. There’s racial discrimination *within* the African American culture, where they’re divisive to their own for instance and the Uncle Tom insult is used to those who they deem as ‘siding with whites’ etc or being ‘prejudiced like whites’.

      • PsychoMantis18

And there was the constant image in the head of the reader that the character they imaginatively invested in was a white guy.

You’re trying too hard to NOT discriminate. You still need a sane level of discrimination –

‘Sir, can you describe the offender?’

‘No! Cause i’m not a heightist, sexist, racist, ageist, bi-focal-ist, fashion-ist! I don’t remember these things, dur!’

        • Weresmurf

Nah man I can just seperate the book from the incoming movie. I love the books for what they are, utterly perfect in my eyes. The movies will be different, a different property and a different story. I’ve seen many movies made of my favorite books, I’ve learnt to seperate the two into seperate things, if you don’t you tear yourself asunder with frustration 😛 Your coment is utterly ridiculous though 🙂

          • PsychoMantis18

It’s a key aspect of the characters appearance. I sure as shit wouldn’t want a white Coffy.

          • Weresmurf

lol sure man, whatever floats your boat.

          • PsychoMantis18

            Smells like defeat.

          • Weresmurf

lol If that helps you cum a bit faster, go for it.

          • PsychoMantis18

It does, so thanks for loosing the argument.

          • Weresmurf

            You’re so cool Brewster!

    • thedragon803

I really just don’t give a fuck anymore. Roland is black, Luke Skywalker might be gay, the new Ghostbusters are all women, world keeps on spinning…if the movies entertain me, great. If not, oh well. Plenty of other shit to worry about.

      • PsychoMantis18

If movies aren’t that important to you then I can’t really appreciate your response.

  • Been looking forward to this for a long time! Here’s hoping they do a good job.

  • Abbe Lee is STUNNING!

  • Abbey Lee is so CUTE!

  • Fred Nagurski

Butcher job, waste of our time and money. Good luck to them.

  • GinsuVictim

I had to look up Tirana because I didn’t even remember this minor character. Not exactly a huge piece of casting info (and definitely not relevant to the beginning of the story).
