Video games have a serious problem, and no, I’m not referring to annoying DRM schemes, microtransactions, season passes, pre-order incentives, Metacritic, press embargoes, platform exclusives, annual sequels, or Konami. The obstacle this industry has yet to overcome is bigger and more bewildering than any of those issues.
It doth vex my brain that of all the many different things that video games have borrowed from movies, there still isn’t a proper gaming equivalent to the Movie Poster.
We kicked this week off with a look back at twenty years of box art for just about every game in the Resident Evil franchise, from the beloved 1996 original to last year’s Revelations 2. Eye candy was ingested, merriment was had, and yet, something was missing. It felt like I spotted Batman standing heroically on a faraway rooftop, then I realized it was just a dark sheet that had gotten snagged on someone’s satellite antenna. A cruel joke, you might say.
We’ll see who has the last laugh, for I’ve found three posters for each of the five live-action Resident Evil films so we can all finally feel complete. And don’t forget to share your favorites so we can silently judge you.
