“Penny Dreadful” Officially Cancelled After 3rd Season Finale

Published

If you watched the third season finale for Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful“, you’ll probably have noticed that it ended with the words “The End”. Alas, that wasn’t hyperbole and fans will need to accept that those words are the last we’ll see of Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, and Timothy Dalton as Ethan Chandler, Vanessa Ives, and Sir Malcolm Murray, respectively.

Creator John Logan has made it clear to Deadline, “I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end — that’s all she wrote.” He continues, describing the show as a poem, saying some are only meant to be, “…haikus and some are meant to be sonnets and some are meant to be enormous epics, and this was always meant to be a sonnet. It was something of grace and beauty. I think we’ve been able to achieve that in a really masterful way with the artists that I work with, everyone’s work. I think this is the right ending so for me to revisit that world again would seem inorganic, I think.

When asked if the show might ever return, Showtime president David Nevins stated, “I’m always happy to speculate, there is no this is done. …I feel like it is a rich world that I think will live on for a very long time. …Who knows?

Premiering in April of 2014, the show was positively received and built a strong fan base. It earned several nominations and won multiple awards over its three seasons, including Best Television Series, Best Original Music, Best TV Actress, and more.
