A New ‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie is in the Works and it Sounds Crazy!

Published

Update: ‘Mortal Kombat’ co-creator Ed Boon tweeted that this is not happening. Tweet embedded below.

The 1995 video game-to-film adaptation of Mortal Kombat was not a good movie by traditional standards but it was fun as hell and absolutely captured the attitude of the game. Well, minus the excessive gore but that’s okay by me. It was more about being a fun martial arts/action spectacle than it was concerned with being a splatterfest and it 100% succeeded, at least in my opinion. The second movie, on the other hand… Well, let’s just not talk about that pile of garbage, okay?

Since Annihilation, which came out in 1997, there was a gritty web series called Mortal Kombat: Legacy that was very well received by the internet community. But rumors that it would lead to a new film ultimately fizzled out as nothing was confirmed.

In an interview with Loaded, Christopher Lambert, who played “Raiden” in the original film”, is now stirring the pot by saying that a third film is in the works.

They have a great idea for the third one. It will be very different,” he tells the site. While nothing was confirmed in terms of an official synopsis or any cast or crew, Lambert did explain the kind of mentality they’re going for, giving the following hypothetical example, “We are going to be travelling through time but in a very special way. So imagine characters having a battle in the middle of London and then whoosh, you smash through a window and find yourself on the hood of a New York cab.

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this! Hopefully something materializes here because I’m all for seeing Goro come back to the silver screen!

In addition to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Universal Monsters movie Wolf Man, Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) has also joined the cast of Weapons, THR has announced tonight.

Weapons is the new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), with Julia Garner joining the previously announced Josh Brolin (Dune 2).

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
