“Bates Motel” Begins its Final Descent into Madness This February

Bates Motel

Norman Bates completes his transformation when A&E’s “Bates Motel” returns on February 20th, Bloody Disgusting can confirm. The forthcoming fifth season will end the series.

News came out of this past July’s San Diego Comic-Con panel that R&B artist Rihanna will play the role of Marion Crane, the iconic guest that appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and didn’t exactly meet a happy ending. Crane was originally played by Janet Leigh, the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis.

Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin then stated: “We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.

Cuse had talked with EW and assured them that even though people have seen Psycho, they won’t be able to anticipate what’s coming for their take on Crane. “We are going to meet Marion Crane, but what we don’t want to do is create the impression that we’re redoing the movie because we’re not at all. She’s a very different person in the movie and her story plays out in a different way,” he explained.

Freddie Highmore is returning as Norman, obviously, with Vera Farmiga as his mother, Norma.

Highmore, Nestor Carbonell, and Max Theriot each direct at least one episode in the upcoming season.

Aww man. I love this show but it is probably best to end it now. Vera Farmiga was so good it will be tough to go on without her in every episode. Would loved to have seen a couple of seasons with Norman being a straight up killer.

I’m curious to see how they’ll get on without Farmiga leading the way for an entire season. Of course we’ll still get plenty of her in hallucinations and flashbacks, but Norman will be the sole leading character now. While I’m not the biggest fan of Vera’s Norma, it’s gonna be a different kind of thing with her in more of a secondary role. That said, it’s best they go ahead and end it now. The ratings have taken a nosedive over the past couple seasons. Glad they’re getting to stick a conclusion on it versus it being cancelled.

    Cannot wait.

  • Brian Gordon

It’s really upsetting they couldn’t cast a real actress as Marion Crane.

  • Jack Derwent

I’m willing to give Rihanna the benefit of the doubt but if she fails this is going to stick out like a sore thumb.

  • “We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and cast a tacky pop singer instead of an actual actress because ratings”
