Production is well underway on Pacific Rim: Uprising (formerly Pacific Rim: Maelstrom), a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monsters vs. robots flick that puts Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s “Daredevil”) in the director’s chair. Though Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, we’re happy to report that other familiar faces will be back.
Over on Instagram yesterday, cinematographer Dan Mindel posted a photograph of one of the cameras being used on Pacific Rim: Uprising, and taped to the side of the camera is a list of actors who were presumably being shot that day. The photo reveals that Rinko “Mako Mori” Kikuchi, Charlie “Newton Geiszler” Day, and Burn “Gottlieb” Gorman will all be returning for the sequel.
While you may have expected that Kikuchi, Day, and Gorman would be back, it’s the other name on the list that comes as a big surprise. As spotted by Slash Film, it damn sure appears that the name Karl Urban is listed, which would be the first we’ve heard of him being involved in the film. At this time, we should mention not even IMDb has Urban listed as being part of the cast.
*UPDATE: Karl Urban just confirmed on Twitter that he is NOT involved.*
John Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film, Stacker Pentecost. Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, and Adria Arjona also star.
Look for Pacific Rim: Uprising on February 23rd, 2018.
