WWE Studios Developing Remake of Norwegian Slasher ‘Cold Prey’

Released in 2006, Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug’s Cold Prey (aka Fritt Vilt) is one of the best slasher films to come along in recent years, spawning a sequel in 2008 and a prequel in 2010. To date, Cold Prey 3 still hasn’t even been released on home video here in the States, but maybe that will change now that an English-language remake is in the works.

Deadline just broke the news that WWE Studios has acquired the remake rights to Cold Prey, and they’ve also sealed a deal for an option to purchase a screenplay currently being penned by Casey La Scala (The Remaining). The film, being described as The Grey meets The Revenant, will center on a strong female character who reaches the limits of physical and mental endurance.

In Cold Prey

A group of friends decide to ski out of bounds and are forced to take shelter when a storm hits, finding themselves imprisoned in an abandoned ski lodge along with a maniacal killer.

Michael Luisi, WWE Studios President, will oversee for WWE and will produce along with La Scala. Marius Haugan will executive produce.

Check out the original Cold Prey trailer below. And watch the movie if you haven’t yet.

Part 1 and Part 2 are excellent since they are just 1 movie basically.

The problem I have with a ‘remake’ of a movie like this is – it’s just a run of the mill – standard formula slasher. Very well done, mind you and entertaining. Why not just ‘not’ call it a remake – give it a different name – no one will know the difference and who knows, if done right they have a new franchise on their hands….

that’s true that part 1 & 2 are really just 1 movie. i love both so much. did you see COLD PREY 3? i know it’s not “officially” released in the states (you can find it…cough…in the usual places….cough). IMO it wasn’t very good.

      • WryMouthX

HOLYSHIT there is Cold Prey 3!

        • J Jett

WryMouthX, regarding part 3…just keep expectations low(?). the general consensus seems to be that it’s not anywhere near as good as parts 1 & 2 (but i hope you end up liking it). 🙂

3 wasn’t that bad. Not as good as the first two, but hardly a terrible film. Solid, if forgettable, deep woods slasher. But taking it out of the cold environs was probably a mistake that made it seem like a thousand other slashers.

YEs I watched part 3. And – I was… underwhelmed. Part 1 – had just enough mystery about what had happened at the hotel that I thought it would be really great. Honestly though – I’ve watched 1 & 2 many times – p art 3 only once. I think it’s time to watch them all again. And I think I’ll start with Part 3 this time….

Totally agree with you that Part 2 – is for anyone looking for a great Halloween 2 vibe….

Why can’t you just release it in the US like in other countries ? I love american movies like anyone, but this constant need to remake foreign movies is very strange. We don’t remake your movies… We simply watch them. Same for this one, I’m French, I don’t speak Norwegian, so what ? It was released there and is considered a classic slasher, the Norwegian Halloween.

I agree. The fact that “I Saw the Devil” is being remade is a tragedy. And I bought “Cold Prey” on DVD years ago and left it at work. A couple of co-workers, who don’t even really like horror films, watched it on a slow night at work and thought it was great. No need for a remake to this film. Just read the damned subtitles. Hell, I originally watched French films “Ils” and “Aux yeux des vivants” with no subtitles. Horror movies aren’t Shakespeare.

the big problem here is wwe studios are making this,so get ready for more garbage.

  • Wwe Studios are responsible for some impressive slashers that are favorites of mine. See No Evil still holds up pretty well, I like the concept of delinquents cleaning an old hotel for community service, most slashers lack a good reason to why people are being hacked up. No One Lives is an impressive revenge thriller that is also a favorite of mine, I really enjoyed that one and i watch it frequently. Lets not be quick to dismiss WWE. Theyre an entertainment company still putting money into decent slashers guessing theyre trying to make their athletes build character out of fear and not just for a quick buck (since they do pretty poor anyway) im sure this adaption will be pretty pleasing for horror fans. I mean its kind of hard to screw up the basic premise of the film.

I can’t help to judge when i see other stuff they are doing……… Also lets not forget that awful Leprechaun reboot they made…

      • Leprachaun and See No Evil 2 were horrible. I never said they were on a perfect streak. But as i said, they should be able to get the job done correctly

    • Khy

I LOVE NO ONE LIVES, I didn’t know that was by them.
NO ONE LIVES is so fucking underrated.

      • J Jett

i agree guys! NO ONE LIVES is really good! it’s a bit of a mind fuck type of movie AND it stars mind-numbingly gorgeous (and talented) Luke Evans!

  • BloodyDisgusted

As long as they keep The Soska Sister’s away from this project, I’ll be happy.

  • Frank Lloyd Jr

Ugh. Just make See No Evil 3 instead.

  • J Jett

COLD PREY 1 & 2 are two of my all time favorites. there’s no way any remake of it could ever come close to the original 2 film’s greatness. a big reason why they were so good is due to Ingrid Bolsø Berdal as lead heroine Jannicke. she IMO is (in a great way) reminiscent of Sigourney Weaver in ALIEN 1 & 2.

also if you want to see a true HALLOWEEN II remake (of sorts) COLD PREY 2 is the film for you. i gave both the first two COLD PREY films 10 out of 10 stars. COLD PREY 3 (which is a prequel) unfortunately was not very good.

    • Yeah I love the first two, but I’m interested in remake that keeps the same locale as the first. And, yes, 3 is pretty rough.

      • J Jett

Zach, don’t get me wrong, i will of course most definitely check out the remake. and i too hope they keep the same/similar locale like the original film/films had. i assume they would have to have it take place in the winter at least hence the COLD Prey title. 🙂

        • Mike tantatelli

“Hot Prey” it’ll be in the Bahamas

        • turk

The third “Cold Prey” wasn’t that cold. At least not snowy.

          • J Jett

turk, that true but they HAD to call it COLD PREY since it was in the COLD PREY series and it has at least some name recognition. if they released part 3 (which a prequel/start of the storyline) first i doubt they would have named the film COLD PREY.

        • Lol. That would make sense huh?

    • Biscoito18

      Thanks for the recommendation.
Just watched Cold Prey 1 and is really a masterpiece! Looking forward to see the sequel. Halloween 2 is my favorite in the franchise, so I’ll probably love it too.

      • J Jett

Biscoito18, awesome! i’m happy to read you loved the first film. i hope you love part 2 as much as i do. whenever you watch part 2 let me know (in any article on this site where i’ve commented) what you think of it! COLD PREY 1 and 2 are basically 1 complete movie (much like KILL BILL VOL.1 and 2 are).

  • RedNeoCon

I’d pay $$$ to see Roman Reigns get butchered in a movie.

  • G.A. McGillivray

Who thinks KANE will play the killer?

  • Khy

WWE couldn’t just have created an original slasher? Ah hell, I’m in.

    • It’s a great setup for a slasher flick and if they stick to same wintry vibe it’ll feel unique for the majority of folks who haven’t seen the original.

    • Wes Draven

They created See No Evil to staggering results, after all. : – P

  • Abandoned_Being

I haven’t been impressed with anything WWE Studios has put out.

  • See No Evil 3

  • I saw the first and second film and I didn’t like! The plot is weak and the character development is horrible.

  • Maxime C

Urgh is there any bad idea they don’t have?
First two were nice, third one seemed useless.

  • Halloween_Vic

I’ve seen the original and thought it was a fun slasher. Being that the slasher genre is my favorite I mean yea I’m desperate for new slasher films, I just hope when they remake it they do it right and kind of their own instead of copying the original frame by frame. Jeez WWE you guys did See no Evil which I love, but you guys couldn’t come up with something original this time around? Either way I’ll def check it out.

    • J Jett

Vic, you have to watch COLD PREY 2!! parts 1 & 2 are basically 1 whole film. and part 2 is excellent (as is part 1) and i kid you not, part 2 is the “true” HALLOWEEN II movie/remake we never got (even though i do like Rob’s H2).

      • Halloween_Vic

Really??? Damn I have to watch that this weekend!!! You said the true Halloween II remake we never got ” oh man that alone sold me lol. I’ll have to go and re watch part 1 also because it’s been years but I’ll watch them back to back. Thanks for the info J, I always appreciate you.

        • G.A. McGillivray

          Hey!

So how did you like Cold Prey 1&2 together?

      • G.A. McGillivray

So – I watched Cold Prey 3 last night – and I’ll watch part 1 & 2 tonight. I found it more enjoyable (watching part 3) watching it in this order while part 1&2 are still a little hazy…

  • Wolf Kane

Loved 1 and 2, the 3rd still hasn’t been released in the UK :(. Im excited for this.

  • Spooky Kooky

Of course I have to check it out, this being one of my favourites, but I don’t see the need for all these remakes!!

  • tbaio

Very good horror series. I felt part 3 was an awesome prequel & the perfect send off. I don’t feel a remake is “necessary” but if they can bring the same impact in English, then so be it. Not every day you get to see a Friday the 13th variant on a ski mountain.

  • Anthony Gulino

The trilogy is still one of my favorites, I look forward to this and I’m hoping it falls into capable hands and we don’t get a slicked out PG-13 version complete with the multi ethnic and multi sexual cast of hot 20 something’s, who make the usual mistakes this for meet there untimely deaths. they need to get this one right ..

  • shane-o-mac

WWE is doing it so it will suck BUT maybe i am wrong cuz they do horror pretty good (see no evil 1&2, no one lives)

  • Kristoffer Groves

The Grey meets The Revenant? Ninja please….. its just Friday The 13th with snow.
