First Look at Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built’ Pays Tribute To a Horror Classic

Published

As we recently told you, Matt Dillon is playing a serial killer in Lars von Trier’s upcoming thriller The House That Jack Built, and today brings our first look out of EFM.

The image (above) comes courtesy of Variety, and as the Danish filmmaker described to the site, it’s “an evocative photo with a cinematic reference.” Give up? The first look image is a tribute to a very similar shot from the 1932 German horror film Vampyr, directed by another Danish filmmaker: Carl Theodor Dreyer.

Variety also reports that The House That Jack Built, filming soon, has just been pre-sold in Germany, Austria, France, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Russia, Hungary, the Baltic States, and the Middle East.

The House That Jack Built follows the highly intelligent Jack (Matt Dillon) over a span of 12 years and introduces the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork.

Bruno Ganz will co-star.

Produced by Louise Vesth at Zentropa Group, the film will shoot in Trollhättan, Sweden, and in Copenhagen.

Here’s the aforementioned shot from Vampyr

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Sleepy Hollow movie

Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.

THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”

You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

The origin of all things Sleepy Hollow is of course Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which was first published in 1819. Tim Burton adapted the tale for the big screen in 1999, that film starring Johnny Depp as main character Ichabod Crane.

More recently, the FOX series “Sleepy Hollow” was also based on Washington Irving’s tale of Crane and the Headless Horseman. The series lasted four seasons, cancelled in 2017.
