Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ Getting a Board Game With ‘Infection at Outpost 31’

Which one of your friends is infected?

Well, this is totally awesome and completely unexpected. Well-timed with the start of Toy Fair, Mondo just announced a new partnership with USAopoly’s offshoot brand Project Raygun that will see the two companies creating pop culture products together. Their first collaboration? A board game titled Infection at Outpost 31, based on John Carpenter’s The Thing!

In the board game, “the tension and mystery of The Thing is recreated as players race to discover who among them are infected in the hidden identity game play engine.”

Said Mondo’s Jay Shaw:

When we set out to create the first licensed Mondo board game the biggest question was; what film property would we go after? So many of the films we celebrate at Mondo would be an absolute blast in game form. As soon as John Carpenter’s suspense masterpiece, The Thing, was mentioned it very quickly became our top choice.

The next step was to figure out how to actually make a game. We all love playing them, but none of us had designed one before. Game mechanics are an incredibly complicated art form and we didn’t want to enter this space unless we were going to get it right. Luckily our dear friends at Project Raygun were completely up to the challenge. They’ve built an incredibly challenging fast paced game of paranoia that transports players directly into the film.

Justin Erickson of Phantom City Creative is handling art duties.

Me and my daughter do really enjoy a few board games – one of them being Clue. And really, The Thing is just a big ‘whodunnit’. So, this could be really cool. This is on my radar as long as I can promise my daughter it’s not as scary as the movie 🙂

Yessir, I shall buy it. My six year old is still a couple of years away from watching the film, so this will be a good primer 😉

I watched it at 6 or 7, your kid is good to go.

….. Will they have little spider heads as game pieces?

I normally take the “Scottish terrier” figure in Monopoly, so perhaps it will be the same with noodly bits coming out of its tummy?

Please don’t make this a game like Mafia. Pleaaaase. That’s the only thing I really want from this game.
