Edgar Wright May Next Battle 6-foot Praying Mantises in ‘Grasshopper Jungle’

This is already my new favorite movie.

Fresh off of Baby Driver, set for release on June 28th, Shaun of the Dead filmmaker Edgar Wright is wasting no time finding another project. THR reports today that New Regency is in final negotiations to pick up Wright’s adaptation of Grasshopper Jungle, a young adult novel published in 2014. The novel was penned by Andrew Smith. Scott Rosenberg wrote the script.

Netflix and several other companies were bidding on the rights.

The post-apocalyptic tale is set in the small town of Ealing, Iowa:

Austin and his best friend, Robby, have accidentally unleashed an unstoppable army. An army of horny, hungry, six-foot-tall praying mantises that only want to do two things.

Matt Tolmach and Nira Park will produce the Wright-directed adaptation.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

The project for Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes is being described as a “fast-paced thriller,” and Deadline reports today that Violett Beane (Truth or Dare) has joined the cast.

Newcomer Jacob Robinson has also signed on to star in the mysterious thriller. Previously announced, Meghann Fahy (“White Lotus”) will be leading the cast.

Landon recently teased on Twitter, “This is my love letter to DePalma.”

Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach wrote the script.

Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Cameron Fuller — “who brought the script in to Platinum Dunes” — are producing the upcoming Drop. Sam Lerner is an executive producer.

THR notes, “The film is a Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse production for Universal.”
