Watch This Long-Lost ‘Silent Hill 2’ Mocap Scene!

Konami’s Silent Hill 2 is widely regarded as one of the best games (if not the best) in the entire series. We’ve posted several times over the years in appreciation of the game. And why not? In addition to the big emphasis on psychological horror and the masterful soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka, part of what made the game so memorable was the emotional toll it took on players. Dealing with some dark subject matter in a mature fashion was a big part of it, but also the fact that you were emotionally invested in the characters, stilted acting and all.

It’s also no secret that Guy Cihi, the voice behind the game’s protagonist, James Sunderland, is a huge supporter of the SH2 fanbase. Cihi also maintains a healthy presence on his YouTube page, posting videos related to the game. Recently, Cihi released a behind-the-scenes video of a motion capture session for a key scene in the game (read: spoilers) involving Jacquelyn Breckenridge (the actress who played Laura), performance director Jeremy Blaustein, and other members of Team Silent. The video in question Cihi thought was lost in his personal storage for the past 15 years, but has now been posted for all to see.

Again, the scene in question contains spoilers, so if you haven’t played the game (and why not?) and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t click.

SH2’s atmosphere is still unmatched to this day. Amazing game.

I think Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill Downpour are equals. Silent Hill 2 has better monsters and levels, while Downpour has better gameplay, characters, and story. Also, even though it is not an official installment in the SH series, Cry of Fear is absolutely fantastic and is up there with those two.

      LMFAO 2 AND DOWNPOUR EQUALS

You are right. Silent Hill 2 is the greatest horror game ever made, and it will never be eclipsed by any other game in the series, and if any sequel is better in any aspect we will call it an absolute garbage game that is nowhere near as good as Silent Hill 2 and should never be said in the same sentence, and whoever does we will spit in their face and say “Really, as good as Silent Hill 2, pffff!”

wait did you just said DP has better story? like, really? oh my god

What’s better about 2’s story and characters? They are all pretty bland or annoying. James is ok but his character isn’t well developed beyond “I killed my sick wife”. Eddie and Laura are annoying, and don’t really serve a purpose. Maria is introduced and killed like twice, we get it, James is guilty. I liked Angela, she had the best story in the game. A lot of people say Silent Hill 2 is the best horror game ever released, and it is very good, but I think it should be seen more of as a blueprint for newer games to improve on. Downpour took the basic formula of 2, ala abandoning the stupid cult thing and going straight to story, and improved the gameplay and exploration. It also developed the characters more, with Murphy and Anne being some of my favorite characters in the series.I admit the monsters are fucking lame, and that’s probably why everyone thinks the game sucks, but I’m sure that if Downpour came out first, and had SH2’s monsters, you would all be saying 2 was a piece of trash.

But James character IS well developed. It’s just not spelled out for you. All the monsters James encounters represents a part of James’ being, as well as his interactions with other characters like Eddie and Laura. You have to pay attention to what is said and what James does, not just the words coming out of James’ mouth. Speaking of Eddie, Laura, etc. they do serve a purpose and that is to illustrate that you make your own nightmare in Silent Hill. Eddie sees people/things that laugh at him and in turn kills those things, eventually seeing James as one of his tormentors. Laura is confused when James tells her about the monsters as Laura sees no monsters. She is an innocent child and has no baggage to bring to Silent Hill. The town is empty to her. All the supporting characters in the game have a purpose. I agree Downpour did some great things with the exploration and combat. But my number one problem is that the story is determined by the player, therefore making any symbolism in the monsters or game meaningless. SH2 is so strong because it sticks to the original theme – James killed his wife and suffers the consequences of that. The different endings deal with how James redeems himself (if he does). That allows the audience to dig deeper and see what everything is supposed to mean in relation to James in SH2. What do the monsters represent in Downpour? Hell if we know. The wheel chair man? Completely depends on the ending so until then it’s just a guy in a wheel chair. That makes for a weaker story overall. Homecoming suffered from the same problem. SH2’s story is subtlety told and I think most agree make it more fulfilling. That’s what Downpour lacked.

I 100% agree with you, and that is the point I’m trying to make. The monsters tell the story, but the characters not so much. Downpour does have a lame ending choice thing that either makes or breaks the game’s story, but when it’s made, it’s fucking MADE! Also I may be wrong but I think the wheel chair guy has the same symbolism in both endings, even though the bad ending is completely retarded. So you made a good point, which zero punctuation did as well, the story should not be changed by the ending, and that is a pretty bad fuck up on Downpour’s part, but again I would choose Murphy over James any day as my favorite SH character, because he is much more expressive and more of a completely broken man.

Hey man, i’m a Downpour apologist too, but don’t go spraying that piss from an unstable dick.

Hate to nitpick but – what’s with people underrating the general praise for a piece of art when they themselves are trying to offer praise?

‘Konami’s Silent Hill 2 is widely regarded as one of the best games (if not the best) in the entire series’ – It’s widely regarded as the best.

It’s like when you get a horror that has been widely acclaimed e.g.: such as.. Wolf Creek, and you get a reviewer quote along the lines of – Possibly one of the best Australian horror films this year.

Anyways.. cool article and nice to see. Always props for Silent-Hill-2-love.
