Universal Just Made “The Mummy Day” a Thing We Should Celebrate

The Mummy arrives on June 9th. But #MummyDay is even sooner.

In a world where everything seems to have its own special day (including the Alien franchise, the Star Wars films and even pancakes), it seems only fitting that one of this summer’s biggest movies joins the fun. Ahead of release, Universal Pictures has announced that the first ever “The Mummy Day” will take place on Saturday, May 20, marked by a special Hollywood event at noon.

On that day, reports Deadline, “A 75-foot, 7-ton sarcophagus will be unveiled at Hollywood & Highland with Tom Cruise taking the stage with director Alex Kurtzman, and co-stars Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella and Jake Johnson. At the famed Hollywood & Highland venue will be the The Mummy VR Zero Gravity Stunt Experience and The Mummy Escape Game.”

The Mummy Zero Gravity Stunt VR Experience goes behind the scenes with Cruise and Wallis as they perform the film’s Zero G stunt. The Mummy Escape Game is an immersive 10-player live-action experience, whereby guests are recruited as security guards to solve interactive puzzles to save mankind from the revenge of an ancient princess who has awakened.

Should be fun!

Alex Kurtzman directed The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Russell Crowe and Courtney B. Vance (TV’s “American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson”).

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
