Fan art by: Sebastian Mora

The sequel to the 2014 film arrives on March 22, 2019.

Filming just kicked off today on Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty’s tentatively titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the third film in Legendary’s epic MonsterVerse that will further set the stage for 2020’s Adam Wingard-directed Godzilla vs. Kong.

Today brings the sequel’s full plot synopsis, confirming what Kong: Skull Island‘s post-credits scene teased!

In Godzilla 2

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.

When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The incredible cast includes Zhang Ziyi, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Ken Watanabe, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Aisha Hinds.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include War Dogs and Godzilla; production designer Scott Chambliss (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2); editor Roger Barton (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the X-Men films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (Godzilla).

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hey Grimphampton. I just tried to post a gif and it wouldn’t let me. How did you pull it off?

      • Grimphantom

If the image is too big or is too long it might not show. I recommend adjusting it to make it smaller or shorter, you can look over at tumblr for gifs or create your own at

  • J Jett

    sounds awesome!

  • Brando

Any word if any of the cast is an aged version of a Kong: Skull Island character?

  • Alanmac

Isn’t this just news that we all already knew? I guess this verifies it’s validity tho.

  • zombie84_41

this is goin to be epic and amazing I hope they make it a good 2hr plus movie too

  • David Smith

    please drop the 3D crap

    • EvilResident

why? it’s not like the first one was affected poorly because of it, or like you had to watch it in 3D at any time. Let those of us who enjoy 3D enjoy it.

      • Evan3

        No 3D for you!

        • EvilResident

          What a weird attitude.

  • Tor from Yucca Flats

So Ghidorah is a Earth creature this time, not a space one? so it basically GMK? it seems extremely similar to GMK with the ancient God monsters rising after a long time.

  • Evan3

Godzilla will be fighting not 1, not 2, but 3 monsters at a time (although that’s only technically one more than he fought in the Piece Of Shit first film). And these aren’t some shitty MUTOs, they are Godzilla villains even I’ve heard of (I’ve only ever seen both American shit versions of Godzilla, so my knowledge of him is pretty low). Still, I have to think this is going to be far more like Skull Island.

That said, how do you then make King Kong v Godzilla work. Ostensibly, Godzilla will have utterly defeated five giant monsters (and I think King Giddhora has three heads to boot) by the time Kong makes his way there. So how will Kong have a prayer against such an overpowered Godzilla?

    • KennyThaKilla

Who said he’d be fighting them all at the same time? And don’t be surprised to see either Rodan or Mothra team up with Godzilla to battle the other two. Remember, these kaijū have a storied history that spans over 60 years, so there are a lot of stories that can be drawn from. A team-up is not out of the question.

And the last time Godzilla and Kong duked it out
Kong won. But setting that aside, you may be overthinking these films. A giant lizard will be fighting a giant ape. That’s all you really need to know.

    • Gd

who said kong and godzilla will be the only monster in the movie? their match is inevitable, but it’s very likely there are other creatures involved.

    • Satanzilla

If you thought the first film was a piece of shit, maybe you should just stick with transformers.

      • Evan3

Of course. If someone can’t appreciate the mind-numbing boredom, horrendous acting, and inexplicably poor directing decisions of Godzilla, then surely, they must prefer the mind-numbing boredom, horrendous acting, and inexplicably poor directing decisions of Transformers????

Rest assured, I hold equal disdain, discuss, and hatred for Edwards as I do for Bay (and for Godzilla that I do for Transformers). I truly find both to be amongst the worst directors to ever succeed in cinemas.

          • Evan3

Why should I. I happen to think I have exemplary taste and incredible logic!

          • KennyThaKilla

Of course. But back on earth, you’re an obnoxious windbag.

          • Evan3

            That’s, like, your opinion man.

          • KennyThaKilla

            Not just.

        • Nick

Got a ‘D’ in film class, eh? If only the world knew your true genius … it’s a pity, really.

          • Evan3

            LOL, a D? Why not an F? And I agree… if only!

A lot of potential here I hope it delivers
