‘Inside’ Directors’ ‘Texas Chainsaw’-esque ‘Among The Living’ is Streaming on Shudder!

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the French filmmakers behind Inside, have been cursed when it comes to their films here in the States. Not only has Dimension yet to release their nightmare-come-to-life Livide but their Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, Leatherface, has been going through hell as they wait for Lionsgate to distribute.

Speaking of Leatherface, the duo has had issues finding distribution for their Texas Chainsaw Massacre-inspired Among the Living, which has been sitting on a shelf since 2014. Now, thanks to Shudder, you can watch it today.

The French coming-of-age horror story follows three boys realizing their average small town is not what it seems. Under the surface of a dusty film studio, they discover a horrific secret that puts their lives in the crosshairs of danger.

Here’s an exclusive first look:

Among the Living is like a mix of Stand By Me, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and It. The footage teases an 80’s atmosphere with the children, but it descends into Texas Chainsaw-like madness by the final frame.

Youngsters, Victor, Dan and Tom skip school to wander around an abandoned movie set. They stumble upon a horrific vision: a woman in chains is dragged through the field by a man wearing a clown mask. The masked man catches a glimpse of the boys, who scramble to run away. But, before they can escape, they see something which has been hidden for years, something they were not meant to see. Terrified of having been seen by the masked man, the boys try to alert the police. Unfortunately, their past record of unruly behavior discredits them and the police do not follow up on their tipoff. That night someone breaks into their homes, seeking to eliminate them…one after another… They are going to meet Klarence…

Chloe Coulloud, Lannick Gautry, Francis Renaud, and Beatrice Dalle (Inside) all star.

  • This movie was decent enough to let me hope for their movie, hope they can find a distribution

  • HotelFSR

The film is okay for about 20 minutes. From there it goes downhill so fast you could say it falls flat on the face and can’t get back up. Promoting this film as some sort of horror film relevation is beyond me.

    • That bad?

      • J Jett

Borgman, it IMO is that bad. i agree w/ HotelFSR that the beginning is pretty good but then it just becomes pretty lousy. the final 20-25 minutes is horrible. i still say watch it if you liked INSIDE & LIVIDE though. you may end up liking it. 🙂

Love the whole beginning. 2nd act is kind of weak. Still gotta do last 30 sometime today. It’s decent so far as long as it finishes strong

    • J Jett

shawn, just a heads up the final 20-25 minutes of the film are the worst part of it. the editing is some of the worst editing i’ve seen in a movie since RES EVIL THE FINAL CHAPTER. it also really looks like they ran out of money while filming and it shows in the final part of the movie. but we all like different things and maybe you’ll end up liking it. 🙂

Just finished it late last night. Thanks. Yeah it wasn’t great but did have few good parts. Better than most crap I see lately

  • Matt Miller

This was such a dissapointing movie

    • J Jett

      Matt i agree 100%.

  • Mauro and Bustillo were also involved with HALLOWEEN 2(2009) but unfortunately dropped out, which is too bad since they would have offered a lot more to the Michael Myers mythology than Rob Zombie did with his eventual sequel.

i watched this last year (or longer) and unfortunately it was terrible. i was so excited to see it after seeing and loving INSIDE and kind of sort of enjoying LIVIDE but AMONG is duo’s worst film yet. the big climax at the end is so poorly edited (not to mention that it really seemed like they ran out of money to finish it) it’s nearly impossible to tell what just happened. IMO none of the duo’s films have come anywhere near INSIDE’s caliber. i hope they are not flukes and they lucked out with INSIDE.

I absolutely loved ‘Inside’ and now it’s like they became one hit wonders. I know not everything they do is going to be a smash hit, hell every director has at least one film that sucks, but damn with these two something is wrong. Well my expectations for ‘Leatherface’ are damn near non-existent after hearing all these things.

      • J Jett

Necro, yeah, i fear that they are one hit wonders. i really hope INSIDE was not just a fluke.

I don’t know my friend! We’ll just have to be patient and see how their next one does. I just have this uneasy feeling in my gut.

  • Necro

Weren’t these two rumored awhile ago to remake ‘Hellraiser’?

    • Jack Derwent

They were on board but they dropped out because apparently their take was more dark and sexual than the producers wanted.

  • Jack Derwent

Kudos to Shudder but kind of makes you wonder why no other distributor was interested.

  • J Jett

oh, i forgot to add that what was a huge bummer about this is Beatrice Dalle (who is awesome!) is only in the film for like 2 minutes tops.

  • Wil McMullen

I saw this movie awhile back and sadly it did not live up to the hype that surrounded it.

  • Blood Boil

So disappointing. What were they thinking?

  • Justin Boland

Awesome movie. Livide is their best film, certainment, but this is tasty.
