R.I.P. ‘Shin Godzilla’ and ‘Audition’ Star Ren Osugi Has Died

We’re sad to report today, via Godzilla-Movies, that a member of the Godzilla family has passed away. Ren Osugi, who played Prime Minister Seiji Okochi in Shin Godzilla, has died at 66 from acute heart failure.

A testament to how prolific Ren Osugi was throughout his career, he amassed just under 400 acting credits since he began appearing in films and television shows back in 1979. Osugi was nominated for the Japanese Academy Award in 1999 for his performance in Hana-bi, which also nabbed him a handful of other prestigious awards.

Other prominent films on Osugi’s massive resume include Takashi Miike’s Audition, Miike’s Dead or Alive, Nightmare Detective and Takeshi Kitano’s Brother.

He frequently worked with Kitano, also starring in his Sonatine.
