One film I think should never be touched for remaking is Peter Medak’s The Changeling, which starred George C. Scott and Trish Van Devere. But this is Hollywood isn’t it- it’s not like the original Ringu wasn’t a blatant rip-off of the film anyways and that’s already been remade. Read on for the latest on the remake, which is bound to kick some serious ass if done right…
Dark Horizons reports:
“American Cinematheque ran a retrospective for Peter Medak this week which included a brand new print of “The Changeling”, and ‘The Film Maven’ was on hand to acquire some potential remake news:
“For the uninitiated, the film tells the haunting tale of a man and the ghost that haunts his new home. It’s a pretty simplistic description but it’s a movie definitely worth seeking out. A Q&A was held following the film and the remake was briefly discussed. First Peter Medak himself was approached to direct. He was hesitant at first but changed his mind when he felt he knew the material best and that if someone was going to remake it might as well be him. Actually he said “The Others” was a blatant rip off of his movie so if he’s going to rip anybody off it might as well be himself.
Second, there have been three scripts already written for the remake and Medak said no to all of them. It is still in active development and he’s waiting on the script. It will be interesting to see if he can pull it off without using CGI. He says he hates CGI, the scares are more effective when you give the impression that a presence is there instead of showing the actual spirit. I wasn’t too thrilled with the idea but I wasn’t too thrilled with them remaking “Dawn of the Dead” and I loved that remake. So I guess we’ll have to cross our fingers and hope for the best”.
