In a battle for general audiences, Buena Vista Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures will spar with their respective wares this weekend. While Walt Disney Studios’ distribution unit is more likely to attract female audiences with Flightplan and Warners is sure to lure men with Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (review #1, #2), both studios are putting their films in 3,000-plus theaters and will be looking for expansion beyond their respective demographics. According to the latest industry tracking, the two films are on target for a photo finish this frame, with both projected to earn in the $22 million-$24 million range. Buena Vista Pictures will bow the Jodie Foster starrer “Flightplan” in 3,424 theaters. Also hitting theaters this weekend in New Line Cinema’s A History of Violence (review), which will open wide next weekend. Fox Searchlight’s Roll Bounce opens in 1,625. I’m going to make a gutsy call and say that Corpse Bride will prevail after those glowing numbers last weekend.
