King Kong (review #1, #2) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe battled for the four-day boxoffice crown with the giant ape finally swiping the Christmas holiday prize. A Sunday night surge gave Universal’s “King Kong” the needed push for the No. 1 spot with over the Friday-through-Monday period with about $31.4 million, edging Buena Vista’s “Chronicles of Narnia” estimated $30.1 million take. The boxoffice lead shifted back and forth all last week as new releases cropped up on marquees Wednesday, Friday and still more Christmas Day. But what about the Christams release of WeinsteinCo’s Wolf Creek (review #1, #2)? How about a nice $2,762,000 in one day?! That would have been a $8 million+ weekend had it opened on Friday. Other openers were Sony’s Fun with Dick and Jane at the #3 spot with $14,500,000 and Fox’s Cheaper By the Dozen 2, which took the #4 spot with $9,350,000. Click here for the full box office report.
