[Comic Review] “Plunder” #2 – Brings Big Body Horror Thrills

Published

on

Reviewed by Torin Chambers. By fully embracing its horror aspects, “Plunder” #2 becomes a much more solid and consistent read than its predecessor. It delivers equal parts suspense and action all wrapped up in some terrific character development. With all of the boring set up from last issue out of the way the book has real room to breathe now. This allows it to flex its horror muscles and begin digging deeper. Everything improves as the books drops its exposition shackles and generates true forward motion from start to finish.

Wasting no time this issue picks up immediately where the last ended. Bahdoon crouches over the infected cook who just destroyed one of his fellow pirates (Disco) and almost Bahdoon himself. There he contemplates the strange consistency of the cook’s blood, it’s thick and sticky, almost like a syrup. While preoccupied with this new discovery he doesn’t notice the sinister looking worm that is birthed from the cook’s gaping face wound. It ominously crawls away, living to fight another day, or maybe even later this issue…

When he regroups with his fellow pirates they’re obviously ticked off about Disco’s death and Bahdoon’s true but fantastical tale does nothing to help his situation. The rest are ready to throw him to the dogs, so to speak, but luckily Stain stands up for him. He takes Bahdoon under his wing and together they split off (always a good idea in a terrible scenario) to continue searching the ship.

There’s some tangible character development delivered from this team-up, something the first issue was lacking. Bahdoon’s arc is excellent here. He really come into his own and turns into someone you want to root for instead of inspiring indifference.

Later in the issue there’s a decently large action set piece that I’m unsure about. It’s something that’s hard to judge because there are still two issues left but it feels like it’s too soon. We’ve barely had any encounters with normal infected people and after this monstrosity they’ll only pale in comparison from now on. I hope Plunder sticks with it and keeps going bigger and bigger, instead of taking us back to lowly peons again.

Plunder #2 improves upon issue #1 in every way, giving an all-around stronger story that body horror fans should definitely check out.

‘Witchblade’ is Getting Resurrected This Summer in New Comic Series from Top Cow and Image Comics

Witchblade, the popular comic series that initially ran from 1995 to 2015 and launched a TV series, is getting resurrected in a new comic series from Top Cow and Image Comics. It’s set to unleash heavy metal, black magic and blood this summer.

Look for the new Witchblade series to launch on July 17, 2024.

In Witchblade #1, “New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini’s life was forever fractured by her father’s murder. Cold, cunning, and hellbent on revenge, Sara now stalks a vicious criminal cabal beneath the city, where an ancient power collides and transforms her into something wild, magnificent, and beyond her darkest imaginings. How will Sara use this ancient power, or will she be consumed by it?”

The series is penned by NYT Best-Selling writer Marguerite Bennett (AnimosityBatwomanDC Bombshells) and visualized by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Suicide SquadPower RangersRed Sonja). The creative duo is working with original co-creator Marc Silvestri, who is the CEO of Top Cow Productions Inc. and one of the founders of Image Comics. They are set to reintroduce the series to Witchblade’s enduring fans with “a reimagined origin with contemporary takes on familiar characters and new story arcs that will hook new readers and rekindle the energy and excitement that fueled the 90’s Image Revolution that shaped generations of top creators.”

Bennett said in a statement, “The ability to tell a ferocious story full of monsters, sexuality, vision, and history was irresistible.” She adds, “Our saga is sleek, vicious, ferocious, and has a lot to say about power in the 21st century and will be the first time that we are stopping the roller coaster to let more people on. I’ve loved Witchblade since I was a child, and there is truly no other heroine like Sara with such an iconic legacy and such a rich, brutal relationship to her own body.”

“The Witchblade universe is being modernized to reflect how Marguerite beautifully explores the extreme sides of Sara through memories, her personal thoughts, like desire and hunger, in her solitude and when she is possessed by the Witchblade. So, I had to visually intersect a noir True Detective-like world with a supernatural, horror world that is a fantastic mix between Berserk and Zodiac,” Cafaro stated.

Marc Silvestri notes, “This is brand new mythology around Sara, and I can’t wait for you to fall in love with her and all the twists and turns. Discover Witchblade reimagined this summer, and join us as we bring all the fun of the 90s to the modern age and see how exciting comics can be. I can’t wait for you to read this new series.”
