[BD Review] ‘Shadow People’ Flickers Between Creepy and Confusing
For those who don’t know, for his classic A Nightmare On Elm Street, Wes Craven drew inspiration from a series of articles printed in the LA Times about a group of Khmer refugees who were experiencing disturbing nightmares, some of whom soon after died in their sleep. Now while Craven didn’t need to advertise his... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Kiss Of The Damned’ Is Stylish, Sexy And Bloody
If director Xan Cassavetes is 100% aware of what kind of movie Kiss Of The Damned is, then I think she’s approaching genius. If not, I thank her anyway because this is one seriously fun, sexy, stupid and gory good time. It reminds me of the 80′s every bit as much as House Of The... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘The Call’ Drowns A Few Smart Moments In A Sea Of Blandness
The Call is a serviceable thriller that makes enough smart choices to make you realize how dumb everything else in the movie is. Not that this the kind of story that writers/directors usually have as a passion project – but I would almost like to see a version of this movie without all of the... Read More Read More

[BD Review] It’s Easy To Have Fun With ‘Big Ass Spider!’
A film that’s simultaneously humble and ambitious, I had a good time with Big Ass Spider!. It’s a movie that sets out to elevate the terrain usually staked out for Asylum type productions and build something more enjoyable on it. In that regard, the film succeeds. Even though Spider‘s brand of humor and sub-genre aren’t... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Holy Ghost People’ Prays For Heaven But Ends Up On Earth
Like so many films at SXSW, I walked into Holy Ghost People utterly blind and not knowing at all what to expect. For the majority of the film’s running time I was handsomely rewarded – this is a well shot piece of work with an intriguing premise and several amazing performances. I was really digging... [BD Review] ‘Plus One’ Is A Weird, Violent And Original Surprise
Plus One isn’t for everybody. It sets up a unique Project X via Can’t Hardly Wait universe and melds it into an Invasion Of The Body Snatchers shaped mold. This ultimately might not be the best delivery system for its message, but it swings for the fences in a way I wasn’t expecting and –... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Futureworld’ is a Worthy Sequel That’s Fun in Parts
Reviewed by Patrick Cooper When the robots in Westworld suffered from a “central-circuit malfunction” and slaughtered a bunch of people, the Delos amusement park shut down. Two years later, the corporate heads decided to re-open the park with a new attraction in place of Westworld: a mock space station called Futureworld. Visitors at Futureworld can... [BD Review] ‘The Asylum Tapes’ is an Exercise in Patience
Reviewed by Patrick Cooper Having to sit through DTV found footage movies is starting to get painful. What stings even more is when one of America’s greatest filmmakers stamps his approval on one of these pieces of crap. [BD Review] ‘Haunter’ Starts Strong But Ends Up In Limbo
It’s tough when you can’t fall in love with a movie you admire but, unfortunately, director Vincenzo Natali (the excellent Splice) is unable to bring his usual flair to the heavily uneven Haunter. After getting easily hooked into the film via an incredibly interesting first act, I found myself losing more and more interest as... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Milo’ Is A Surprisingly Funny ‘Ghoulies’ Update
For a movie about an ass demon – literally a creature that repeatedly comes out of (and escapes back into) Ken Marino’s ass – Milo is a remarkably cohesive film, both thematically and tonally. While I’m a huge fan of the talent involved, the central conceit seemed sketchy at best and I walked into the... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Cheap Thrills’ Is A Masterful And Nuanced Bit Of Horror Satire
One of the great benefits of a film festival like SXSW is being able to see movies before you have a chance to pre-visualize them. With Cheap Thrills, I think I popped up a few casting announcements last year but, as far as exposure goes, I hadn’t seen a trailer or any kind of imagery.... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Evil Dead’ Is A Thrillingly Gory Blast
Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead is most certainly a remake done right. It takes elements from one of horror’s favorite franchises and reinterprets them in the most extreme manner possible for a studio film. It’s very much an attempt to recreate the intended effect of the original for 2013 audiences and, in that regard, it’s almost... Read More Read More

[BD Review] ‘Zombie Lake’ has a Slow Pace and Dull Story
Reviewed by Patrick Cooper French filmmaker Jean Rollin left behind a legacy of fantastique films with his signature poetic flourishes, such as The Rape of the Vampire. His 1981 film Zombie Lake, however, is devoid of any creativity or poetic trimmings. It is simply a cheap zombie movie with lots of t&a peppered throughout. Kino/Redemption... Read More Read More

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper Jess Franco was a prolific erotic horror director who has made about 200 films since the 1950s. I can’t imagine that Oasis of the Zombies is one of his more beloved films. This movie got the bad taste out of my mouth after seeing blood car, this movie however is was fun movie. Having seen the original I was curious what they could do with this remake. The original to me was good but IMO it wasn't anything special besides the great gore effects by Tom Savini but still a good horror film. Totally misleading. While the strong acting is a plus, I found that my attention wandered off quite a bit for the majority of the film. I am a huge werewolf fan and have been for awhile. I stumbled across this movie looking through a bin at wal-mart and picked it up for $5. Honest score: 4.5 but 4 is too low. This is a Rob Zombie film. It's a Rob Zombie film in its strong visuals, uniqueness, ambition and pure heart.
