I still havent’ gotten around to A&E’s premiere episode of “Bates Motel,” yet (I was pulled away from it right as I was starting) so I’m going to have to take the official word on this one.

For those that are still catching up on the series Norman Bates discovers a sketchbook hidden underneath the carpeting in one of the rooms at the Bates Motel. Inside, he finds Chinese writing and manga sketches, immediately becoming captivated by the drawings. Norman, along with his classmate and friend Emma Decody, begin to dig deeper into the story behind the sketches and stumble upon a bigger mystery than either of them could have imagined. As the season unfolds, more characters from the manga are introduced and more secrets exposed; this book is the story of one of those characters.

[TV] New “Bates Motel” Featurette Has First Look At Footage From The Show!

“Bates Motel,” the Psycho prequel from “Lost”‘s Carlton Cuse and “Friday Night Lights”‘ Kerry Ehrin, has just debuted a new featurette that highlights some actual footage from the show (the first real footage we’ve seen) along with some cast and crew interviews. If anything, it’s probably our best look yet at the tone and visual aesthetic we might be getting when this thing premieres next year.

“Bates Motel” serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film, “Psycho,” and promises to give viewers and intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years and just how deeply intricate his relationship to his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is.

Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell, Mike Vogel, Nicola Pletz and Olivia Cooke also star. A&E is currently filming the series in Vancouver, for an early 2013 premiere.

[TV] Two Eerie Teaser Promos For “Bates Motel”

Freddie Highmore stars as Norman Bates in “Bates Motel,” the Psycho prequel from “Lost”‘s Carlton Cuse and “Friday Night Lights”‘ Kerry Ehrin. The series will explore Norman’s back story that helped forge the infamous serial killer. After relocating to a new town, Norman will be tasked with navigating the social land mine that comes with being the new kid at a local high school. His mother, Norma Bates, will be played by Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Up In The Air, The Conjuring).

I’m not entirely sold on the idea of this being a modern day show, complete with iPhones and Norman being a fan of Manga (apparently), but I’ll give it a shot! Meanwhile this teaser (via EW) tells us next to nothing – except that Norman (or Norma?) will probably at least handcuff one woman to a sink before disposing of her.

Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell, Mike Vogel, Nicola Pletz and Olivia Cooke also star. A&E is currently filming the series in Vancouver, for an early 2013 premiere.

TV: Freddie Highmore Moves From The Chocolate Factory Into “Bates Motel”

In a few weeks “Lost” “Heroes” and “House M.D.” director Tucker Gates will be getting behind the camera to start filming the 1-hour pilot presentation of A&E’s upcoming series “Bates Motel,” which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho and examines the twisted relationship between serial killer-to-be Norman Bates and his mother Norma. Vera Farmiga was recently locked as Norma Louise Bates who is described as passionate, and compelling, a smart, multidimensional character who is always capable of surprising us. And now they’ve found their Norman!

Per TV Guide, Freddie Highmore (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland) will be stepping into the shoes vacated by Anthony Perkins (and Henry Thomas in part 4, yo).

The Universal TV-produced Bates Motel has a 10-episode straight-to-series order for a 2013 premiere. Former “Lost” co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin (“Parenthood”) serve as writers-executive producers. “Bates Motel” had been developed as a miniseries when A&E bought it in January. When Cuse and Ehrin boarded the project two months later, they reworked it as a series and wrote several scripts. That prompted A&E’s July decision to forgo a pilot and go straight to series.

Paramount Pictures' Premiere Of "Transformers" - Arrivals

TV: Michael Bay’s “Occult” Not To Be Confused With Jennifer Carpenter ‘The Occult’

Pending an approved cast, Michael Bay (pictured above; Transformers), along with his Platinum Dunes gang Brad Fuller & Andrew Form, have a pilot order for their new TV show, “Occult” via A&E.

According to Deadline the project, written by James Wong (“The X-Files”), “draws parallels to X-Files and Fringe, centers on a FBI agent who returns from administrative leave after going off the deep end while investigating his wife’s disappearance. Eager to be back on the job, he is paired with an agent with her own complicated backstory who specializes in the occult. Together, they will solve cases for the newly formed occult crimes task force.

There is no studio attached yet but, with a pilot order from a network in place, one shouldn’t be too hard to come by. With “Fringe” winding down this could be pretty cool if they do it right!

TV: A&E’s ‘Psycho’ Prequel “Bates Motel” Goes To Series

A few months ago A&E announced it was in early development on “Bates Motel,” and that it would serve as a prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock 1960 classic Psycho. The plan was to offer an understanding into how Norman Bates’ psyche developed and would tell the back story of the film’s killer. The audience was to learn of how his mother and her lover damaged him, transforming him into serial-killing motel owner.

And that plan looks like it’s going swimmingly. Apparently their faith in exec producer Carlton Cuse (formerly the showrunner of “Lost”) is stronger than expected because they’ve committed the project to series without seeing a pilot. Per Variety, “Cabler has ordered 10 episodes of the Universal Television series while forgoing a pilot. A&E’s faith in not asking for pilot first comes in the form of former “Lost” showrunner Carlton Cuse, who will exec produce with Kerry Ehrin.

We are proud to be partnering with Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin on their thrilling reinvention of one of the most compelling characters in cinematic history,” said A&E president Bob DeBitetto and exec VP of programming David McKillop in a joint statement. “It’s a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business and we’re looking forward to getting started.

“Bates Motel” premieres in 2013. Who do you think should play Norman Bates?

TV: A&E Bringing Rosario Dawson’s “Occult Crimes Taskforce” Back From The Dead

OccultCrimes232812 TV: A&E Bringing Rosario Dawsons Occult Crimes Taskforce Back From The Dead

Back in September of 2006, Dimension was developing O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce, an Image Comics series that launched in July of that year. That comic was co-created by Rosario Dawson and David Atchison, and it was always designed as a star vehicle for her.

But time changes things. Obviously that iteration of Occult Crimes Taskforce never happened but, proving that there’s hope for even the most tortured of development projects, now it appears as though A&E and “Walking Dead” producer Gale Anne Hurd may have come to the rescue.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, “Rosario Dawson is teaming with The Walking Dead’s Gale Anne Hurd to bring her graphic novel to A&E with both women attached as executive producers. The scripted drama, an increasingly appealing genre for the cable network, will explore the inner workings of the task force, which was established after the Civil War to make the New York City streets safe from practitioners of black magic, demons from another dimension and all manner of supernatural malcontents.

The show “will center on the character of Sophia Ortiz, a new member of the bureau who uses magic, spells, ghosts, the undead and the unnatural. At the heart of the story is an ongoing struggle between the O.C.T. detectives and an organized demon-force attempting to take over Manhattan.

This concept sounds like it may actually be better suited to television than film, I could actually see it taking off as a variation on the standard police procedural formula. READ MORE
