[BD Review] ‘Aftershock’ Rattles and Fizzles

I caught Nicolas Lopez’s Aftershock after it world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, and wasn’t a fan. Since then, critics seem to be having fun with it, so I sent Bloody’s Evan Dickson in without warning to see if he could survive the violent Eli Roth-produced thriller. While he did enjoy it on some level, he seemed to tip the sale more in the Richter negative direction.

There’s a lot to like in the film, but I can’t recommend it as a complete work. It has a lot of great components, but it seems oddly intent on sabotaging itself with elements that just don’t belong within its tonal landscape,” says Dickson in his review. “That’s not to say that there still aren’t things to enjoy in Aftershock, there are…[still, it's] something I wanted to love became something I found myself trying to like.

The film takes place in Chile, where an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they are in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face the nightmarish chaos above ground. READ MORE

New Poster For ‘Aftershock’ Tests The Richter Scale

In limited theaters May 10 from Radius is Aftershock, Nicolas Lopez’s horror film starring Eli Roth, Selena Gomez, Ariel Levy, Nicolas Martinez, Lorenza Izzo, Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart, and Miguel Asensio. A new poster that I sort of like has surfaced for the film, but I miss the neon green seediness of the first one.

After being acquired out of the Toronto Film Festival last September, the flick will get a limited release alongside Ultra VOD, much like Magnolia’s release strategy.

In the middle of a night of wild partying, a hapless American tourist (Roth) and his friends are suddenly plunged into a living hell when a powerful earthquake rips through the coastal town of Valparaíso, Chile.

Mr. Disgusting disliked the film, but my thoughts on it are more mixed. There are certainly some fun, gory elements I could recommend (but with some reservations). Look for my review next week! READ MORE

[2013 HORROR MOVIE PREVIEW] DIMENSION FILMS

The Amityville Horror, Halloween 3D and Hellraiser never happened, again, so we sit back and watch as Dimension Films works out their 2013 slate without the iconic slashers.

Even without them, 2013 looks promising with the Blumhouse alien pic Dark Skies being the most intriguing. The question is as to whether or not they’ll get back into the groove and get us some franchise sequels, including a new Scream.

What film are you most looking forward to? READ MORE

[Random Cool] See Eli Roth In The Gory Telenovela “Ataque Al Corazon”!

It appears that Eli Roth and director Nicolas Lopez hit it off during their collaboration on the upcoming Aftershock, because Roth is flexing his thespian chops once again under his tutelage.

Lopez has a comedy opening in Chile next week called Que Pena Tu Familia, and the characters in the film watch a Telenovela entitled “Ataque Al Corazon” (“Attack The Heart”). So, in ongoing the tradition of fake TV shows being shot in order to give movie characters something to watch, we’ve got a trailer from the show. It brings the gore and more than a little bit of “Grey’s Anatomy” style sexual friction.

[BEST & WORST '12] Mr. Disgusting’s List of the Worst Horror Films of 2012!

I recently has a few conversations with people about posting “Worst of the Year” lists as it’s in a way “kicking a dog when it’s down.” Time could be better spent sending positive energy into the world, but on the same token it’s our job to critique films; we are supposed to provide advice on what you should and shouldn’t see.

With that said, it doesn’t provide me with any pleasure to list out this year’s biggest disappointments – but without the bad, how can we learn from other people’s mistakes? If there’s anything to take away from these films, it’s learning what not to do in film. The biggest lesson this year? Don’t pretend to be a horror fan to cash in on our loyalty (I’m looking at you Smiley). READ MORE

Eli Roth Shooting In Previously Unfilmed Village For ‘The Green Inferno’

Eli Roth’s (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel: Part II) November shoot for The Green Inferno is just around the corner. And this cannibal film, inspired by Italo mondo films like Ruggero Deodato’s notorious 1980 Cannibal Holocaust and Antonio Climati’s 1988 Natura contro (also known as The Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust II), will literally be shooting in the middle of nowhere.

Roth told Movieline that he’s taking a small crew to a remote village up the Amazon River that has “no electricity, no running water, nothing.” And what to do the villagers get in return? “We’re giving these people a boat They have no contact with the outside world and we’re giving them a motorboat and we’re giving them medical supplies and school supplies, so they’re ecstatic. The one thing they need is a boat. They were like, ‘This will literally change our lives’.

Oh, and these people had never seen a movie before. So what did the Green Inferno team screen for them? Cannibal Holocaust. “The villagers thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen.

Roth’s hotly anticipated return to the director’s chair is said to follow a group of New York City student activists who head to the amazon where they plan to protest and save un-contacted tribes. Since the group is described as being “naive” in their efforts, I’m assuming the tribe is hungry. Roth penned the screenplay with Guillermo Amoedo. The duo also co-wrote Aftershock, which Dimension Films acquired out of the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.

[Fantastic Fest '12] Corey Mitchell’s Mini-Reviews: Day 6 – ‘The King Of Pigs,’ ‘Bring Me The Head Of Machine Gun Woman,’ ‘Berberian Sound Studio,’ & ‘Aftershock’

The 8th annual Fantastic Fest ends for me after 6 days. The sci/fi, fantasy, martial arts, Asian fantastic, and horror film festival offers up a little something for all genre lovers. Sadly, I cannot make it through the entire 8-day span as I have two daughters to take care of and a book to write.

It is my duty to bring you the most horror and/or horror-related film reviews possible. With less than 20 feature films considered to be true horror, I will occasionally spotlight other non-horror films that will, hopefully, appeal to our readers here at Bloody Disgusting.

Be sure to be on the lookout in Austin, Texas from October 25-27, 2013, for my very own Housecore Horror Film Festival. I will be joined by my partner, former Pantera lead singer and heavy metal legend Philip H. Anselmo. We will be bringing 100% horror and heavy metal to the Lone Star state!

Check out Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5 for more Fantastic Fest reviews! READ MORE

Eli Roth ‘Clown’ Short Becomes Feature, ‘Aftershock’

Back in October we brought you a pretty awesome Halloween treat: a mock trailer for Clown, which was assembled using Eli Roth’s name as the crux for the joke. While it was funny, it was actually a pretty sweet idea for a feature as it followed a dad who puts on a clown costume for his kid’s birthday, only to have it transform into an evil clown creature. The treat is now a full blown bag of candy as a feature film version was financed, with Roth coming aboard to produce. You’ll find the full details inside, along with info a second project, Aftershock, which takes place following the Chilean earthquake.
