The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag

‘Hoag’ centers on the title character being struck one evening with the realization that he has no memory of what he does during the day. He contacts a husband and wife detective agency and asks them to surreptitiously follow him — leading to a series of frightening revelations, beginning with a group of shadowy figures who gravely warn of dire consequences unless the pair immediately cease their inquiry.

Paradise Lost

Written in 1667, Milton’s epic poem revolves around the fall of man and the classic battle of good vs. evil, telling along the way the story of Satan/Lucifer, the angel who tries to overthrow God, and the temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The project tells the story of the epic war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, and will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D.

‘Robopocalypse’ Author Gets ‘Amped’ With Director Alex Proyas

Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson is finalizing a deal to develop his best-selling thriller Amped as a movie at Working Title Films, says THR.

The project originally had been set up in 2010 at Summit Entertainment, which optioned the novel in advance of its sale to Doubleday. But the company let the rights lapse as it merged with Lionsgate this year.

Set in the near future, Amped imagines a world where nanotech-enhanced people and ordinary humans are at war with one another.

Alex Proyas (I, Robot, Knowing, The Crow) is attached to direct.

Wilson’s Robopocalypse is being adapted by Steven Spielberg for a planned release in summer 2014. Drew Goddard penned the script for the DreamWorks-20th Century Fox co-production.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] ‘Crow’ Director Heads To ‘The Drowning City’

Constantin Film has acquired Joe Golem And The Drowning City, a graphic novel by “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Alex Proyas – best known for The Crow, Knowing, Dark City and I, Robot – is set to adapt and direct the live action feature, which will be shot in his native Australia. The book was published in March by St. Martin’s Press and is the second collaboration by Mignola and Golden, who also teamed on Baltimore.

The title is a supernatural-steampunk illustrated novel that follows an orphaned teenage girl, an aging magician, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and the stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem—a man whose strange dreams hint of a history he has forgotten–as they struggle for the fate of an alternate 1970s lower Manhattan. In this vision, lower Manhattan sank into the water during a catastrophic earthquake in 1925, leaving those unwilling or unable to abandon it to make a new life in streets turned to canals.READ MORE

Red Granite Pictures will fully finance and co-produce Alex Proyas’ horrifying sci-fier The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag with Mythology Entertainment, Phoenix Pictures and Mystery Clock Cinema, reports Variety.

Proyas, best known for The Crow, Knowing and I, Robot, adapted the screenplay from a 1942 novella by Robert Heinlein. The original story also served as inspiration for his underrated gem Dark City, which is kind of cool if you ask me…

Producers are planning to start shooting in the fall in Australia where Proyas is a resident and operates his Mystery Clock Cinema banner. READ MORE

Legendary Pictures Pulls Plug On ‘Paradise Lost’

The legendary battle between good and evil has been postponed… this time it’s forever.

After a start date bump back in December, Legendary Pictures has officially pulled the plug on Alex Proyas’ big-budget adaptation of John Milton’s 17th-century poem Paradise Lost due to budget issues, says Variety.

Bradley Cooper, Ben Walker, Casey Affleck, Djimon Hounsou, Rufus Sewell, Camilla Belle, Diego Boneta and Callan McAuliffe were slated to star in the film, which Legendary initially pushed from January to June.

Insiders close to the production told Variety that while Proyas’ vision of the movie was great, the technology wasn’t quite there, and the filmmakers couldn’t reduce the budget enough to satisfy Legendary.

Vincent Newman was set to produce Paradise Lost with Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Project was designed to showcase eye-popping aerial warfare, and Warner Bros. was onboard to distribute.

Decision frees up the schedules of its stars, who are expected to be in high-demand — particularly Cooper and Walker. READ MORE

The picture has crewed up for an Australia shoot and the talent and below the line is learning about the postponement right now.

In the case of Paradise Lost, there is so much green screen work and VFX that the budget looked to be getting unwieldy. They will try to rework those costs and possibly get the film into production by the late spring or early summer. READ MORE
