Revisit a Look at ‘The Darkest Hour’ Aliens

Revisit a Look at The Darkest Hour Aliens

*Originally posted right here on Bloody back in November, other horror sites are speaking as if this was just discovered. So we bumped the story back up top so you can see the aliens again…

Since at the time Summit Entertainment has only released one official image from the film, I decided to revisit the trailer for The Darkest Hour and do a little screen-grabbing. In doing so I stumbled across something they may or may not want you to see.

Within this article you’ll find three grabs from the official trailer that clearly depicts the alien creatures in the Chris Gorak-directed sci-fi horror pic opening on Christmas Day. It looks a little CGI intense, yet I wonder if the FX work was even complete during the cut of this trailer… who knows? Your thoughts below!

Starring Olivia Thirlby, Emile Hirsch, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman and Max Minghella, the 28 Days-like thriller follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. READ MORE

See Tons of Practical Effects Work on ‘The Thing’ Remake!

See Tons of Practical Effects Work on The Thing Remake!

Remember Universal’s The Thing remake? Yeah, I forgot about it too, at least until I started work on my worst of 2011 list being featured later this month. One of the biggest faux pas in the Strike Entertainment prequel/redo was that the film featured an insane amount of CGI. Much like DreamWorks’ Fright Night 3D, it was rumored that the CGI was used to mask a lot of practical work.

Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., the company behind the visual effects in the creature feature, has uploaded a new video that proves without a shadow of doubt that there should have been a lot more practical effects. Are you ready to have your mind blown? Are you ready to turn red in rage? Are you ready to finally admit that the prequelmake is a piece of sh*t? You will in about 5 minutes…

The Thing arrives on Blu-ray January 31, no word on if this will be included in the extras. READ MORE

Two New Clips For ‘The Darkest Hour 3D’ Don’t Add Much To The Trailer

darkeststills112211 Two New Clips For The Darkest Hour 3D Dont Add Much To The Trailer

With a Christmas Day release date looming, Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour (set report part 1, part 2), is doing everything it can to kick things into awareness overdrive.

While I love the cast, I’m just not hyped up about this one yet. These clips straddle the same kind of pleasantly middle of the road territory as the trailer. So even though I wouldn’t mind seeing it, I’m not chomping at the bit just yet.

Directed by Chris Gorak, and starring Olivia Thirlby, Emile Hirsch, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman and Max Minghella, the 28 Days-like thriller follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

Hit the jump to check out the clips! And if you haven’t seen the trailer, we’ve got that in there as well. READ MORE

40 Hi-Res Images From ‘The Darkest Hour’

darkesthournew121211 40 Hi Res Images From The Darkest Hour

Summit Entertainment has dropped us the final hi-res batch of imagery from The Darkest Hour (set report part 1, part 2) that features more guns, more electricity and the reveal of mercenaries. Click the image above for a whopping 40+ hi-res stills.

Directed by Chris Gorak (the man behind the awesome thriller Right at Your Door), and starring Olivia Thirlby, Emile Hirsch, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman and Max Minghella, the 28 Days-like thriller follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

David Harley smartly noted this is basically Predator in Moscow. Oddly, this doesn’t make me any more excited. The invasion begins on Christmas Day. READ MORE

‘Men in Black 3′ Trailer Asks You to Take a Leap of Faith

Men in Black 3 Trailer Asks You to Take a Leap of Faith

It’s no secret that the production for Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black 3 has been a troubled one (the movie is STILL filming pickups). This time around Will Smith travels back in time to 1969 in order to save a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) and avert a world-ending disaster. The only disaster is attempting to do a time travel film – on a short time frame nonetheless. Word on the street is that the screenplay was still being written as production got underway, a giant no-no if you’re going to leap from year to year. Plot holes? Yes please.

Still, I have to admit that the newly released trailer is a bit eye-catching. While it attempts to deliver on the humor (and fails completely), some of the concepts are pretty rad (especially the idea that he has to jump to time jump). Take a look inside and tell us what you think.

In theaters May 25 from Columbia Pictures, Tommy Lee Jones, Jemaine Clement, and Emma Thompson also star. READ MORE

Aliens Invade for Electricity in Second ‘Darkest Hour’ Trailer, Stupid Billboards Litter City

darkeststills112211 Aliens Invade for Electricity in Second Darkest Hour Trailer, Stupid Billboards Litter City

I’m highly concerned about Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour (set report part 1, part 2), which invades theaters this Christmas. While both the first trailer and the new one embedded inside are pretty impressive, other aspects of the campaign are downright shocking. There are billboards all over the Los Angeles area that exclaim “Survive the Holidays” in giant font, while below it you’ll be lucky to catch the title while driving 25+MPH. Even worse is that the imagery behind the text is absolutely impossible to see. It literally looks like the city is plastered with billboards for a movie called Survive the Holidays. Is it like this across the country?

Directed by Chris Gorak, and starring Olivia Thirlby, Emile Hirsch, Rachael Taylor, Joel Kinnaman and Max Minghella, the 28 Days-like thriller follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

I’m going to see it because I love Gorak’s Right at Your Door, and am a fan of both Thirlby and Hirsch. But what does the rest of American think? I’d be incredibly concerned if I were Summit. READ MORE

1prometheus120111 Hi Res Prometheus Stills, Fox Exec Responds to Trailer Leak!

*Article updated with music from the film’s trailer. The video is in the middle of this story.

It’s been quite a month for Twentieth Century Fox and Prometheus, their presumed prequel to Alien directed by franchise creator Ridley Scott. Keeping the excitement in momentum, by clicking the above or below still you’ll now find our new gallery of hi-res imagery!

In addition, Tom Rothman, CEO of Fox, spoke with MTV about the recent trailer leak. “I heard some of it leaked, which wasn’t so good,” he said. “That’s not fair. It’s heartbreakingly unfair, because … the quality of the visuals is as spectacularly beautiful, shot in 3-D compositionally the way only a master could do it,” Rothman added. “For some early, early, early, early half-baked, half-assed test to leak, it’s so unfair.

And speaking on the Alien connection he explains: “I’ll tell you the great thing: It’s way bigger than that. The ideas are way bigger, way more original and — it’s a scary word — way more profound.

The Waring Signs of ‘The Darkest Hour’

Summit Entertainment is mimicking the District 9 viral campaign with a series of fun “Warning Signs” from The Darkest Hour created to evoke the new realities the characters face in a post-invasion world, populated by an invisible enemy bent on exterminating all life. The unique alien invaders pose a particularly lethal challenge as they are made up of invisible wave energy with their presence unveiled only via nearby activated electrical systems.

Directed by Chris Gorak, “ ‘Darkest Hour’ is the story of five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.” The 3D thriller is said to highlight the classic beauty of Moscow alongside mind-blowing special effects.

You’ll also find the second TV Spot not airing across the country. READ MORE

[Random Cool] ‘Aliens’ On Ice, Cross Sectioning the Creature!

Alien and Aliens are two of my favorite films in the existence of mankind, which is why any sort of comical related online goodie makes me instantly want to share it with you guys.

First, The Old Murder House Theater took to the Chaparral Ice November 18th and 19th in Austin Texas to perform Aliens On Ice”. Yes, you read that correctly. I hate plays, but I definitely would have made my out to see Ripley beat down some Queen ass live on ice. We posted a montage of scenes in the above video.

Also discovered online via Tumblr is Brad McGinty’s incredible homage to a crazy book called “An Anatomical Guide To Monsters”. This amazing book showed great cross-sectioned views of the anatomy of the most famous Kaiju monsters of 1967. Below you’ll see his cross-sectioned view of H.R. Giger’s alien creation! TV: ‘Walking Dead’ Producer to Tell the True or False Story of ‘Area 51′

“The Walking Dead” executive producer Gale Anne Hurd and her Valhalla Entertainment have optioned Annie Jacobsen’s book “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base” for a potential TV series, reports Deadline.

The hourlong project, which will be taken out to the networks shortly, will be written by feature scribe Karl Gajdusek. “It will follow two men working on the base who are thrust into danger when they uncover secrets that the government will protect at any cost.

Jacobsen’s “Area 51″ sheds light on the highly classified military base, which has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories claiming that it is home to aliens, underground tunnel systems, nuclear facilities or even the lunar landing, supposedly staged and filmed there. Jacobsen interviewed 19 men who served the base and another 55 who had links to Area 51, including living and working there for extended periods. The book chronicles what has really gone on in the Nevada desert, from testing nuclear weapons to building super-secret, supersonic jets to pursuing the War on Terror.

There are a lot of cool directions this can go, some even terrifying, so it all depends on if they choose fact or fiction. I prefer fiction. READ MORE

What Might A Practical ‘The Thing’ Prequel Have Looked Like?

ThingPrequelLandscape111111 What Might A Practical The Thing Prequel Have Looked Like?

People have a lot of understandable beef with The Thing prequel. Fragmented story, Eric Christian Olsen and CGI. Mainly the CGI.

Last month I interviewed Eric Heisserer, one of the film’s screenwriters, and he was very forthright that the film was originally intended to be all practical. “I got this job going in with the firm, fervid belief that no CGI should ever be in this movie. That it should be all practical. We are creating a very grounded psychological thriller and part of that paranoia with the monster movie is to have the monsters as real and as grounded as everything else we’re making around them

And now some new images of the practical work by Vincent Guastini, some dating back to when The Thing prequel was a SyFy Channel product under the tutelage of Frank Darabont (before it changed hands to Strike Entertainment/Universal), has gone online.

Per Make Up Mag, “Vincent Guastini’s special make-up effects credits include Requiem for a Dream, Dogma and Saturday Night Live; he also contributed to the recent prequel of The Thing, although you wouldn’t know it from watching the film.

Guastini, who describes himself as “a huge fan of The Thing mythos” says he was contacted in 2004 when the Syfy channel was considering an episodic version of The Thing, and later, a made-for-TV feature version penned by Frank Darabont…

Over time, however, concepts for the film and Guastini’s original ideas and designs ultimately weren’t used in the film. So here is your chance to see Guastini’s concept designs and sculptures for the first time.

Universal Crash Lands on ‘Asteroids’ Idea

Universal Crash Lands on Asteroids Idea

I still don’t understand studios remaking movies that nobody has ever heard of, nor do I get adapting games with a vague (or no) plot. Such the case with Asteroids, which is to be a feature film version of the classic Atari videogame. Is there a reason it needs to be connected to the 1979 8-bit game? (See the above image; apparently that translates into a movie…) From my perspective, it’s just a transparent lame plot to cash in on the game’s popularity…

Universal is heading down that path with Asteroids and has tapped Evan Spiliotopoulos (Snow White and the Huntsman) to give story to the simple game. The plotline for the film adaptation has evolved into the story of two estranged brothers that must team up to save Earth from an alien race. Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) originally worked on the script.

I still think if they’re going to waste time on this, they may as well deal with real alien sh*t (literally) and remake the 1990 Spaced Invaders. READ MORE
