[Editorial] 9 Great Horror Soundtracks

It’s nearly Halloween. Outside, the wind is howling. The trees are bare, the branches looking like skeleton limbs crudely stuck together. Leaves cover the ground, causing each step to elicit a satisfying crunch. The sky is steel grey, threatening rain, thunder, and lightning. In a simpler way of putting it, it’s the best time of the year.

For me, one of the best ways to celebrate this time of year is by putting on some of the creepiest, eeriest, scariest music that I can get my hands on. There is something deliciously fun about scaring myself with shrieking violins, out-of-tune pianos, otherworldly choirs, and bizarre ambient tones.

And since this time of year is something special to a great many people, I wanted to share some of my favorite horror soundtracks, the ones that make me want to curl up under a blanket and play one horror movie after another, until the saving grace of the sunrise saves me. Join me below for 9 Great Horror Soundtracks! READ MORE

[Interview] Chris Vrenna Revisits The American McGee’s Alice Soundtrack

When I was in high school, I remember cutting out during lunch, hopping into my car, and driving to the local shopping mall to pick up my copy of American McGee’s Alice the day it came out. I already could tell that I would love the game simply on the visuals and my love of the books. But what I would never have guessed is how much I would fall in love with the soundtrack, which was composed by Chris Vrenna (of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson fame). Full of rich, haunting cues that perfectly used the themes of the game, story, and level design, it’s one of those rare albums whose music never seems to leave the mind, always lurking in the dark recesses, the melodies creeping forth when you least expect it.

And so, when I was given the chance to speak with Chris Vrenna, I couldn’t help but ask him about his work on Alice. Read on below for the full interview as we revisit Wonderland!

Chris Vrenna just released a new Tweaker album entitled Call The Time Eternity. Check out our review here. READ MORE

[Album Review] Tweaker ‘Call The Time Eternity’

When I first heard the band name Tweaker many years ago, I didn’t have much association to work with. But then, upon learning that it is a project from Chris Vrenna, who was a member of Nine Inch Nails as well as the composer of American McGee’s Alice, my ears perked up and my radar was set abuzz.

Now, years later, Tweaker is back with a third album, Call The Time Eternity. It’s been eight years since 2a.m. Wakeup Call, so has time treated this group well or should they have stayed in the shadows? Find out below. READ MORE

[Album Review] Stolen Babies ‘Naught’

I first learned about Stolen Babies a few months ago. Since then, I could’ve allowed myself to regret and mourn all the time that I hadn’t been listening to them. Rather than self-flagellating, I dove into their dark avant-garde world, as though I had purchased a ticket to some nightmarish carnival that tickled and teased every twisted and perverse avenue of my imagination.

And so it was that I entered listening to their latest album Naught, with images of American McGee’s Alice mingling with scenes from The City Of Lost Children, all housed in a carnival tent out of Killer Klowns From Outer Space. So, was this trip worth the price of admission or did I end up wanting a refund? Find out below. READ MORE

Hear A Snippet From A New Marilyn Manson Song

Just so you know, Chris Vrenna (ex-Nine Inch Nails, composer of American McGee’s Alice) is now the drummer for Marilyn Manson. Okay, back to the topic at hand. Marilyn Manson posted on his Facebook a short video entitled “I Am Among No One (excerpt from an undisclosed song with an unreleased title)”. It’s a bit of a mouthful, eh?
