[Interview] Scott Derrickson And C. Robert Cargill On Creating ‘Sinister’, The Lost Angela Bettis Scenes On The Blu-ray, Plus Updates On ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’ And ‘Sinister 2′

Sinister arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today, February 19th. Both versions include audio commentaries, deleted scenes and multiple featurettes and it’s a rather more loaded disc than we’re accustomed to getting with many horror releases these days.

Yesterday I had the chance to talk with writer/director Scott Derrickson and his co-writer C. Robert Cargill (aka “Massawyrm” on Ain’t It Cool). While I’ve talked about Sinister with Derrickson on prior occasions, this was my first opportunity to speak with both of them about their ongoing collaboritive process. We also discussed the lost Angela Bettis scenes that have made their way back onto the Blu, the upcoming video game adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution as well as an obligatory follow-up on my part regarding Sinister 2.

In the film, “Ten years ago, true crime writer Ellison Oswald (Hawke) made his reputation with a best-selling account of a notorious murder. Now, desperate to replicate the success of his first book, he moves his family into a home where the previous occupants were brutally executed and a child disappeared, hoping to find inspiration in the crime scene. In the home, Ellison discovers a cache of terrifying home movies, unwittingly opening the door into a nightmarish mystery.

The Woman (VOD/V)

The Woman is the last surviving member of a feral clan that has roamed the Northeast Coast for decades. When the last of her family is killed in a battle with the police, The Woman finds herself alone, severely wounded and vulnerable. Unfortunately, she is now a far too easy prey for local hunter, successful country lawyer and seriously disturbed family man Christopher Cleek. With his twisted set of ideals, Cleek decides to embark upon a deranged project – to capture her and “break” The Woman – a decision that will soon threaten the lives of Cleek, his family and The Woman. Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino produce.

[Interview] Writer/Director Lucky McKee Talks About ‘The Woman’ and His Take On “White-Knight Syndrome”!

PollyLand101311 [Interview] Writer/Director Lucky McKee Talks About The Woman and His Take On White Knight Syndrome!

The controversy around Lucky McKee’s The Woman has certainly helped raise the film’s profile, but along with notoriety come misconceptions. In a way it seems as though it’s regarded as something of a tough sell, some people are afraid to see it in the same way they’re afraid to see Human Centipede 2. And that’s a shame.

The reality is, the two films couldn’t be more different. The Woman contains none of the graphic self-indulgence of this fall’s other most feared movie. Sure, there’s a few gruesome moments but The Woman is a rock solid independent movie more concerned with emotional terror, the repercussions of abuse, feminism (the accusations of misogyny are beyond myopic) and the nature of civility versus our feral instincts. It’s also an engaging story with real characters. I can’t stress enough how much this movie doesn’t even really deserve the controversy directed at it. It should instead be recognized on its merits, which are plenty.

I spoke with Lucky McKee on the phone last week to talk about the film, its soundtrack and its now legendary reaction at Sundance.

The story follows a successful country lawyer who captures and attempts to “civilize” the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast in the wild for decades, thereby putting the lives of his family in extreme jeopardy.

Starring Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Angela Bettis, the film prompted furious debates and walkouts during its world premiere in the Park City at Midnight program at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Reports surfaced of people becoming sick while watching the graphic scenes and one irate Sundance audience member went so far as to say THE WOMAN “ought to be confiscated, burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone.” Whether a “wonderfully bizarre tale” or an “inhumane degradation of women,” you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Scar 3D (V)

Zack Ford’s script follows Bettis’ character Joan Burrows who returns home for her niece Olympia’s high school graduation only to be confronted with her nightmarish past: at the age of 16, Joan and her best friend were kidnapped and extensively tortured by a serial killer named Ernie Parish. Joan managed to escape and kill her captor, but it appears as though he has somehow come back from the dead, intent on continuing his macabre and deeply disturbing proclivities.

Sundance ’11 REVIEW: Lucky McKee Returns to Horror Glory With ‘The Woman’!

I hate throwing backhanded compliments, but I wasn’t expecting Lucky McKee’s The Woman to change the horror world. I figured it would come and go, and we’d forget all about it. I started seeing positive reviews trickling across the web and couldn’t stop from asking myself, “for real?” He’s for real alright. Ryan Daley came out of the Sundance Film Festival screening raving. I believe – based on his score – that THIS Jack Ketchum collaboration was indeed his favorite of the fest.

Potent and disturbing, it’s the sort of movie serious, open-minded horror fans live for… you`ve got a future cult classic on your hands.
