In what might be the most star-studded cover album ever, Metallica, Anthrax, Halestorm, Corey Taylor, and more will be featured on This Is Your Life, a tribute album to Dio/Black Sabbath/Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio. The album will feature 13 tracks as well as Dio’s original “This Is Your Life”. The vast majority of the songs have never before been released, so this will be a really exciting album for fans of Dio and his work!
Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010 after losing his battle with stomach cancer. While he was incredibly short the man had a voice that was unbelievably powerful and beyond iconic. He was proof to many that metal and amazing vocals were not mutually exclusive. His loss was a damn shame and he is still missed sorely.
This Is Your Life will be released April 1st via Rhino. Head below for the track list. READ MORE

Yesterday I had the chance to interview John Petrucci, guitarist of Dream Theater, quite possibly the biggest progressive metal band in the world. In this interview, we discussed the band’s second Grammy nomination (for “The Enemy Inside”) and their current tour in Europe and their upcoming North American ‘Along For The Ride’ tour. We also spoke about John’s appreciation for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and how the band views touring in countries that are having political turmoil. Check out this exclusive interview below!
For me it was a thrilling interview simply because he was a huge inspiration while I was learning guitar and several of his riffs and solos still send goosebumps up and down my spine.

Danish rockers Volbeat have announced several new details regarding their upcoming album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, which comes out April 9th. The album will feature guest appearances from King Diamon (Mercyful Fate), Sarah Blackwood (Walk Off The Earth), and blues harp player Paul Lamb. It’s also been officially announced that the band has welcomed ex-Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano as one of their own.
Singer/guitarist Michael Poulsen comments on King Diamond’s guest appearance, “I’m a huge fan of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. Having King on the record is a huge privilege. Normally, it’s not something he does. He wrote his own lines, and it is half my lyrics and half his. It’s a weird, scary story, and he’s the perfect person for it.”
Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies was recorded in PUK Studios in Randers, Denmark with Jacob Hansen and Rob Caggiano sharing production duties. READ MORE
Heavy metal legends Anthrax have released a stream of their take on the classic AC/DC track “TNT”, which you can hear below (courtesy of Loudwire). The song comes from the band’s upcoming covers EP Anthems, which hits streets Mar. 19th (pre-order here).
Drummer Charlie Benante comments, “We recorded the track in Chicago and in Los Angeles [and] the sessions were really easy, felt really good. The thing about ‘T.N.T.’ for me is that there’s not a lot of drumming on it. So the challenge for me was to not go crazy with fills, but to pay tribute to the original recording, and keep it AC/DC.” READ MORE

While the media is often focused on the (falsely) negative impacts that rock and metal music cause in society, they are often keen to ignore the massive benefits that these genres can provide. And in a gesture of just how true this statement rings, Alice In Chains just wrapped up their 4th annual Alice In Chains & Friends Fantasy Football League charity. The league this year was comprised of AIC members Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez, former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, ex-closer of the World Champion San Francisco Giants Brian Wilson, NFL contributor Elliot Harrison, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, Black Label Society guitarist/vocalist Zakk Wylde, former Queensrÿche songwriter/guitarist Chris DeGarmo and Gun N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan.
Each year, the participants donate an item that will be auctioned off via eBay. At the end of the auctions, all proceeds are donated to the league winner’s charity of choice.
This year, Anthrax’s Scott Ian won the league and chose The Painted Turtle as the charity which will be the recipient of the proceeds. The Painted Turtle is a group of camps that host children with serious medical issues, all free of charge. As a result, all proceeds to the charity go directly towards helping the families and children directly.
If you wish to enter a bid on any of the items, head on over here. READ MORE
Newly wed couple Dan Phillipps and wife Kinga decided to start their wedding off with a bit of a bang by entering the hall to Slayer‘s “Raining Blood”. In a story to Blabbermouth.net, Phillipps stated, “Slayer has always been a very special band to me. Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax were the reasons I got into heavy metal. I remember first hearing ‘Hell Awaits’ in 1987 and being blown away. I never heard anything like it.
“When I first met Kinga, I didn’t know she was into extreme music. She’s from Poland so I randomly asked her if she heard of Behemoth or Vader. To my surprise, she heard of them and had seen them live in concert a few times. So we instantly clicked. Our second date was a Rotting Christ concert.
“When I was planning our wedding intro, I knew that I didn’t want your typical wedding music for our intro. I spoke to Kinga about it and she agreed. A standard wedding intro just didn’t seem right for my wife and I. Something about the ‘Raining Blood’ intro seemed like the perfect walk-out music for us. I got goosebumps just thinking about it. Most of my friends and family loved our intro. They said it was perfect for my wife and I.”

Danish metal band Volbeat has announced that ex-Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano has officially signed on as second guitarist. Caggiano produced the band’s upcoming album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, which will be coming out April 8th.
Singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen shared, “The band is very proud and happy to announce that he will also be the new guitar player in Volbeat. The collaboration with Rob in the studio was so inspiring and in good spirit that we the decided to keep him. Basically we went into the studio as a three piece and came out as a whole band!”
Discussing the album, Poulsen states, “Half of the album tracks will take you into the world of outlaw gunslinger stories sometime in the 1800s. Some of the characters are true legends, while others are fiction. The listener will hear inspiration from old classic spaghetti western movies which gives you a clue to the album title and cover artwork.”

Danish rockers Volbeat have announced that they will be releasing their new studio album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies this Spring. The band recorded the album with producer Rob Caggiano (Anthrax) and Jacob Hansen, who produced and mixed the previous four Volbeat releases.
Front man Michael Poulsen reveals; “We’re back in the studio, this time breaking some of our old habits and this sometimes means leaving our comfort zone. We are recording in a new environment, producing with a new set up breaking new sonic ground and it’s exciting! Together with our long time collaborator Jacob Hansen we also have the honor of having producer Rob Caggiano on board in the producer’s seat. Expect lots of surprises and some of our most rocking heavy songs to date. We feel more than ever that we are taking the Volbeat sound to another level without changing what we’re all about. Drummer Charlie Benante comments on the Boston cover, saying, “If ever there were a perfect first album, it’s Boston’s first album. The harmony leads they did would later be heard by Iron Maiden, which of course would lead to thrash metal.”
Vocalist Joey Belladonna, “These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It’s just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs. Fun stuff!” READ MORE
Thrash metal legends Anthrax recently announced the shocking news that lead guitarist Rob Caggiano had quit the band, just a month before a heavy touring schedule was set to begin. However, the band also stated that they would not be hosting auditions for a new lead guitarist. The reason for that is now obvious as it has been announced that Shadows Fall guitarist Jon Donais will be filling in as lead guitarist while the band tours over the next few months.
Scott Ian states, “Jon is a bro and he’s also a total fucking ripper. I’ve worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I’m excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with Anthrax. 13′s gonna be a good year.”
Donais adds, “I grew up on Anthrax, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of The Big Four, I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he’s being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band – Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed – who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this.”
You can see all tour dates that Donais will be on below. READ MORE

Guitarist Rob Caggiano has decided to leave Anthrax to focus on studio production work. The lead guitarist has already amassed several production credits including Cradle of Filth‘s Grammy-nominated album Nymphetamine, The Damned Things, as well as Anthrax’s latest album Worship Music, which has a Grammy nod this year thanks to their song “I’m Alive”.
Caggiano’s official statement reads, “I’m extremely proud of my time in Anthrax. Actually, that’s an understatement! We accomplished so many great things together over the years and I shared some of the best times of my life with these guys. As a band, we also weathered quite a few storms along the way. It’s been a wild ride (to say the least) from Day One and I wouldn’t change one single thing about the last 12 years. This is an extremely difficult and emotional decision for me to make but my heart is just steering me in a different direction right now. I’ve always been one to follow my heart in everything that I do and while this might be one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, it feels like the right one for me at this time. Scott, Charlie, Joey, Frankie (and John Bush) will always be part of my family and this decision doesn’t change the way I feel about that in the slightest. I would also like to say thanks to all the amazing fans I’ve met and hung out with worldwide over the years. You guys always were and always will be the reason why I make music! In this day and age, being a musician isn’t always easy -also an understatement- but the fans truly make it worthwhile for me. I hope to see each and every one of you again really soon. The fact that Anthrax is at the top of their game right now and totally ‘out for blood’ after all these years is a testament to this band’s longevity and conviction! I’m truly honored to have been a part of their brilliant legacy.”

To make this tour even more special, we will be playing our ‘Among The Living’ record in its entirety. I can’t wait to play ‘Horror Of It All’! Come on out and worship with us, my friends. The official 2013 Grammy nominations list has been released and, as per usual, it takes the opportunity to laud and celebrate what the radios and mass media have been shoving down our throats for the past year (thank god we can use mp3 players and dictate what we want to listen to, right?). Now, I basically just completely ignored the vast majority of categories and immediately scanned down to find the four categories that interested me: Best Rock Performance, Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album. And what I found was pretty…well, it was pretty confusing. READ MORE

It’s no secret that the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany is probably the largest metal festival in the world. Drawing in tens of thousands of people from across the globe, this festival brings some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal as well as showing the more underground, extreme acts that people would otherwise have no chance to see.
Now, the 2013 incarnation of this extremely popular festival is officially sold out. Let me rephrase that in a way that should have a mind-blowing effect on you: Wacken Open Air has sold 75,000 tickets almost one year in advance. There is one set price for tickets ($140) and they are sold on a first come, first served basis for the Aug 1st – 3rd festival. Without knowing the full line up for the show, people have spent $140 plus fees and postage. It’s unbelievable but it also says that Wacken is doing something right. They have been selling out the festival for several years now and it looks like there is no sign of them stopping.
Below is a list of bands that are so far confirmed to play at the show (a TON more will be added over the next months, so keep an eye out at the official website to stay up-to-date) READ MORE
