Want A Horror Film From The Guy Who Wrote ‘Apollo 18′ And The Guy Behind “American Horror Story”? You’re Getting One!

Brian Miller wrote Apollo 18. Ryan Murphy co-created “American Horror Story” and “Glee”. Together? They’re gonna bring you an as yet untitled sci-fi/horror flick.

Per Variety, “Apollo 18″ scribe Brian Miller and Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of “American Horror Story” and “Glee,” are set to pen an untitled sci-fi/horror movie for Sony Pictures. Murphy will produce with John Palermo (‘Drive’), and story details remain under wraps.

Miller wrote the found footage sci-fi pic ‘Apollo 18′ for The Weinstein Company and is also writing an untitled sci-fi thriller for Paramount and producer Brad Weston.

This could be good! It could also be an unwieldily combo of boring and “whatever sticks to the wall” weirdness. Only time will tell! READ MORE

[Blu-ray Review] Does ‘Apollo 18′ Take Off Or Crash Land

There weren’t too many people arguing with me when I reviewed Apollo 18 this past September during its (technically successful) box office run; there’s a guy on Twitter who seems more defensive of it than any of its own filmmakers, but otherwise the consensus was that the movie didn’t work. The found footage aspect was a terrible fit for the setting and story, and even with a barely feature length runtime, it was too slow and its scares too minimal to compete with the other big mockumentary films (the Paranormal Activity series, Rec and its remake, etc). Does it fare better at home on a second go around? And more importantly, does the Blu-ray’s extensive collection of deleted scenes and alternate endings hint that this was once a much better film?

The answer to both is a very VERY soft “yes”. Knowing that the movie was a pretty dull affair took out the initial “When is something going to HAPPEN?” frustration and allowed me to just accept the movie for what it is: an ambitious but deeply flawed attempt to meld the found footage approach with, well, the damn moon. On paper it actually sounds pretty awesome/intriguing – a secret lunar mission, 16mm film shot by the astronauts that has been recovered by some conspiracy website, etc. Plus, I was sort of charmed by the filmmakers’ handicap – here they are one of the most expansive locations in the universe, and yet they’re limited to a cramped module and its immediate surroundings. On top of that, they’re limited to showing everything through the lens of dated camera technology – no zoom lens, no endless digital tape to let a camera record all night, not even real portability with the camera. ‘Apollo 18′ Blasts to Home Video December 7th

Anchor Bay Entertainment and Dimension Films announced today the Blu-ray and DVD release of the sci-fi thriller, Apollo 18. In the same vein as such blockbusters as The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, the film unearths alleged lost Department of Defense footage to construct a riveting story of the events that unfolded during this covert mission to the moon. Full of tension and suspense, Apollo 18 blasts into stores on December 27, 2011 with an SRP of $39.99 for the Blu-ray Combo Pack and $29.98 for the DVD.

Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 7, 1972, was the last manned mission to the moon. But two years later, in December of 1974, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

Blu-ray and DVD bonus features include an audio commentary with director Gonzalo López-Gallego and editor Patrick Lussier, deleted and alternate scenes, alternate endings, among other bonus features to be confirmed. READ MORE

[Review] ‘Apollo 18′ Lacks Creative Intensity, Scares

Not reviewed for critics, this morning I hit the first Midwest showing of Dimension Films’ Apollo 18 in hopes of blasting off on a terrifying trip to the moon. Unfortunately, Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s found footage sci-fi horror is mediocre at best.

If anything, ‘Apollo 18′ lacks creative intensity. It’s a very lazy attempt at bringing terror to the moon. In fact, it’s not even scary, unless of course you consider a sleeping dude opening his eyes and yelling into the camera “frightening” (he does this twice, by the way). Unseasoned genre lovers may find entertainment in the slow burn, and may even experience goose bumps upon some reveals, but in all honesty their time could be better spent watch any of the ‘Alien’ films.”

Apollo 18

Official synopsis: Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972, was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

Alternate: The film unearths footage from Apollo 18′s undocumented and covert mission to the moon, revealing disturbing new evidence of other life forms.

It’s an extraterrestrial film that was greenlit when Russian director Timur Bekmambetov presented film footage purported to have been shot by the crew of Apollo 18. That moon mission from the early ’70s was officially canceled by NASA, but according to urban legend, it actually happened. Timur’s footage shows signs of alien life, and the events of the mission are built into a thriller story line.

Latest ‘Apollo 18′ Clip Loses Its Mind

‘Apollo 18′: Feast Your Eyes on Some Real Conspiracy Theories

Dimension Films will take off for the moon on September 2 with their found footage Apollo 18 (visit the film’s official website), which purports to have edited to together declassified footage – that leaked onto the web earlier this year – from a NASA mission that supposedly never happened.

With the rise of the Web and internet investigators, searching Google for anything from “Moon landing” to “Apollo NASA” will turn over more conspiracy threads than actual stories from authentic press outlets. Is there something in the rise of conspiracy theories and supposed evidence, or is it just inflated due to the average person’s ability to kick start their own blog?

While I would never suggest to you dear readers that the moon landing was faked, or that canceled Apollo missions were actually launched by NASA, there is an entire community dedicated to outing NASA and proving to the world that we’re ALL be lied to.

Technology has made it incredibly easy for those seeking evidence to do their own searching/investigatin. There’s Google Earth, Moon and Mars, with NASA declassifying thousands of hi-res imagery from their satellites and missions to the Moon and Mars. Conspiracy hounds have been sniffing through these images and videos in hopes of discovering evidence that proves NASA is lying, which is where films like Apollo 18 are inspired from.

Some very interesting items of note? Why not read about how NASA photoshopped the dark side of Saturn’s moon (a NASA emplloyee openly admitted to it, claiming it was to clean the image). Or, try searching for water on Mars back in 2008 or 2009, when it was just revealed a few weeks ago. You’ll also find all sorts of interesting stuff if you read about the moon and Photoshop; try searching for “Moon photos taped,” as some people claim to have uncovered NASA’s old tricks of putting tape over various areas of the moon. Not to mention the thousands who claim to have proven the moon landing was faked by the way the American flag is shadowed and pictured.

Terror Hides in ‘Cave’ of ‘Apollo 18′ Clip

Dimension Films has gone hog wild this week pounding the Web with clips from their Blair Witch Project in space, Apollo 18, which opens in theaters September 2 from director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego. ”

A third clip – entitled “Cave” – has been released that appears to be a big jump scare from the flick. It reminds me of a strong moment from Saw.

Latest ‘Apollo 18′ Clip Keeps You in the Dark

I applaude Dimension Films for taking the Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity path and keeping all released content to a minimum. Personally, the less I know about a film going into the theater, the better. With zero images released thus far, Bloody Disgusting scored an exclusive TV spot clip from Apollo 18 that’s pretty similar to the previous released few. The only info released: the mission to the moon is a controlled experiment, the astronauts weren’t given the truth, they find a dead body from a previous mission, and then one of the dudes gets infected. What comes next is anybody’s guess.

A Nice Change Of Pace: ‘Apollo 18′ And ‘Final Destination 5′ Move Up

As the April 22 release date loomed over the horizon, Dimension Films bumped Apollo 18 to January 22, 2012, indicating that either the film was a lot more work than the studio thought or it was a total turkey. In an amazing turn of events, the outer space flick – which unearths footage from Apollo 18′s undocumented and covert mission to the moon, revealing disturbing new evidence of other life forms – will now bow on August 26, 2011.

Also getting a release date shift is Final Destination 5, which moves from August 26th to August 12th, 2011. You Decide: ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ Eerily Similar to ‘Apollo 18′

Just last week you were all treated to this astronomically incredible trailer for Dimension Films’ Apollo 18, their “found footage” sci-fi horror film arriving in theaters April 22 that unearths footage from Apollo 18′s undocumented and covert mission to the moon, revealing disturbing new evidence of other life forms. Heading back to the ’70s, the trailer features a dead body and debris from another spacecraft, along with an “evil” infection seemingly destroying the mission and everyone involved.

This weekend I was carousing through the Netflix archives when I stumbled across an interesting film from 1990 entitled The Dark Side of the Moon (no, this has nothing to do with Pink Floyd). Taking to the year 2022, I found this synopsis quite interesting: “In 2022, a spaceship is stranded on the dark side of the moon, where the crew finds a 30-year-old shuttle that seems to be lifeless. Upon boarding to look for supplies, they find a corpse and an unrelenting evil that threatens to kill them all. One by one, the crewmembers are possessed and turn on one another in a killing rampage, until finally, the survivors deduce that the spirit haunting them is actually Satan, who is rapidly gaining strength.” We found the trailer (albeit in horrible VHS quality) and have posted it below for you to judge.

Has Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s Apollo 18 taken ideas from D.J. Webster’s The Dark Side of the Moon? Coincidence? You decide…
