Wacken Open Air 2013 Sold Out Almost A Year In Advance

It’s no secret that the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany is probably the largest metal festival in the world. Drawing in tens of thousands of people from across the globe, this festival brings some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal as well as showing the more underground, extreme acts that people would otherwise have no chance to see.

Now, the 2013 incarnation of this extremely popular festival is officially sold out. Let me rephrase that in a way that should have a mind-blowing effect on you: Wacken Open Air has sold 75,000 tickets almost one year in advance. There is one set price for tickets ($140) and they are sold on a first come, first served basis for the Aug 1st – 3rd festival. Without knowing the full line up for the show, people have spent $140 plus fees and postage. It’s unbelievable but it also says that Wacken is doing something right. They have been selling out the festival for several years now and it looks like there is no sign of them stopping.

Below is a list of bands that are so far confirmed to play at the show (a TON more will be added over the next months, so keep an eye out at the official website to stay up-to-date) READ MORE

Insomnium Sign With Century Media Records

Century Media Records is proud to announce the signing of INSOMNIUM who recently won the Finnish Metal Awards earlier this year for Best Band and Best Album (for the 2009 album “Across The Dark”). The band comments: “We are very happy to announce that we have signed a deal with the mighty Century Media Records. Throughout the spring and summer we negotiated with several attractive labels but in the end it was clear that Century Media would be our home for the years to come. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and genuine love for music made an instant impact on us. We are convinced that this alliance will lead to even greater achievements in the future and also avails us to tour outside Europe more often. And naturally it is a great honor for us to stand in the same team with the likes of Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Paradise Lost, The Haunted, Finntroll and Turisas. A new exciting chapter in the story of Insomnium has begun!

We want to thank Jens Prueter and the whole Century Media crew for putting their trust in us. We thank our manager Jukka Varmo for handling the negotiations very smoothly. We also wish to thank our previous label Candlelight Records for the decade that we spent with them. We salute you all!”

The much anticipated disc is set for an Oct. 12th North American release via InsideOut Music.

Spiritual Beggars uploaded a short audio sample of the new album as a pre-listening teaser. For more information please check the band’s MySpace profile, as well as their Twitter. The official track listing is listed after the jump as well. This album marks the group’s first offering with the extremely dynamic and talented Apollo Papathanasio on vocals.
The artwork of the upcoming album is done by the well known Brazilian artist Gustavo Sazes. Spiritual Beggars’s guitarist Michael Amott states: “I’m extremely pleased with the Return To Zero cover! To me, it’s the quintessential Spiritual Beggars artwork. The artist really managed to capture the essence of our band, the new album and the constant flow of cryptic ideas I was throwing at him. As I’m old school, I can’t wait to see this in its full glory on the vinyl LP. But hey, it’ll look cool as a minuscule image on your iPod too.”

Dimmu Borgir Post First Of Four Pieces Of New Album Artwork On-Line

The first of four portions of the new artwork for the as-yet-untitled Dimmu Borgir album has been uploaded to the band’s MySpace page.

Joachim Luetke (Arch Enemy, Kreator, Sopor Aeternus), German artist / painter / graphic designer who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, lends his disturbing talents to the new Dimmu Borgir album.
When asked what he feels his approach does for Dimmu Borgir, Luetke responds: “My artwork visualizes their music, adds another (optical) dimension to it.  I don’t know exactly how this works.  Cannot tell what kind of interior mechanism gets triggered by their music, but it’s clearly an utmost powerful one.  Analyzing this means destroying it.  As for our repeated collaborations, well, that’s probably because we share the similar philosophy at eye level.”

In early June, Dimmu Borgir proudly announced their collaboration with Norwegian composer and Berklee College of Music summa cum laude alumnus Gaute Storaas in addition to the 51 members of KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra) and the 38-member Schola Cantorum Choir for their new release.  To date, over 101 musicians have contributed to the making of the new album.

Composer Gaute Storaas has said of Dimmu Borgir: “Their music is epic, thematic and symphonic already from the creation; they are clearly having an orchestral approach to composing.”

Dimmu Borgir’s ninth studio album will be released in Germany on September 24th, in the rest of Europe on September 27th, and in North America on October 12th. They will also be touring with Korn throughout Europe later this year.

Witchery Complete New Album: Post New Track On-Line

Witchery’s line-up reads like the who’s who of Swedish Metal: Jensen (guitars) plays with The Haunted; solo-guitarist Rickard Rimfält for Séance; bass player Sharlee D’Angelo is in charge of the deep end of Arch Enemy and Spiritual Beggars; while drummer Martin Axe hits the skins of Opeth and Bloodbath. The upcoming album Witchkrieg, set for a June 29th North American release, features the debut of new vocalist Legion (ex-Marduk, ex-Devian) and an army of the best metal guitarists. The fretboard wizardry of Kerry King (Slayer) crowns “Witchkrieg,” the opener and title track.

Guitar player Jensen had met Kerry in 1999 on the first U.S. tour of his band in Los Angeles after the WITCHERY show at The Whiskey. “He came on our bus and we partied all night long. We played air guitar while listening to old Rainbow records,” Jensen remembers. “At the Roskilde Festival in Denmark I bumped into him again. I played him the song, he listened to it three times straight and said: ‘Yeah, I’ll do it.’
