Twisted Music Video Of The Week Vol. 72: Avatar “Black Waltz”

For some reason, I’ve been finding myself eager to go to a circus or a carnival of some sorts. Something about getting a giant elephant ear and going on rickety, possibly dangerous rides is rather appealing. However, the snow and ice that is just outside my window is a constant reminder that this is simply not a possibility. Alas, I have months to go before I can even entertain the very thought.

So that’s why I turned to an outside source to get my circus thrills vicariously: Avatar‘s “Black Waltz” music video! And so I share it with you as the Twisted Music Video Of The Week! The video features singer Johannes Eckerström as ringleader to a host of twisted performers, including a woman who steps on glass, swallows fire, and lays on a bed of nails, and a man who power drills his nose as well as inserts a condom into his nose and pulls it out of his mouth. Meanwhile, the chorus is starkly disconnected, as Eckerström violently howls, “Life is so wonderful/life is so beautiful/Just smile/No one gets out alive“. Give it a watch below and enjoy your weekend!

Swedish avant-garde metal band Avatar have released an official video for “Smells Like A Freakshow”, which comes off their fourth studio album Black Waltz. The Johan Carlen-directed video shows each member of the band playing the role of the tormenter and the tormented, inflicting one horrific pain after another upon themselves. Check it out below.

Frontman Johannes Eckerström states, “The video illustrates inner conflict in an explicit manner, using abuse of unjust power in different contexts. The lyrical themes of downfall, embracing of decadence and failed attempts to escape are pointed out by the fact that ultimately the bad guys win.READ MORE

Alan Moore’s ‘Fashion Beast’: Comic Vs. Screenplay

Alan Moore originally wrote Fashion Beast as a screenplay back in his 80s hayday at the same time he was writing a little book called “Watchmen”. Now, Avatar is publishing a comic adaption of Moore’s “Fashion Beast”, the first issue of which will be in shops this week. The screenplay has been adapted by Antony Johnston and Facundo Percio, with Moore’s involvement throughout. Turns out the comic is pretty spot on adaptation. Below you can check the first page of the screenplay alongside the first few pages of the comic. All credit for this goes to Bleeding Cool, and I thank them wholeheartedly for sharing it with us. Alan Moore’s ‘Fashion Beast’ #1 Lands In September!

Back in the 80s when Alan Moore was in his heyday of creation, he wrote a little (actually massive) screenplay called Fashion Beast. The idea was to modernize the classic tale of “Beauty and the Beast” in a dystopic, and slightly horrific, society (this reeks of Moore). The film script never saw the light of day. The screenplay has now been adapted to comic form, by Moore himself, for a ten-issue series to be published by Avatar Press beginning in September. This may be the book fans have been waiting for to bridge Moore’s visionary storytelling from the 80s with his more experimental work of the past decade. There are a bunch of alternate covers that you can check out below with some more details. READ MORE

Review: Crossed: Badlands #1

In 2008 writer Garth Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows redefined horror comics with the release of Crossed. The concept was simple; a virus begins infecting people worldwide and causes them to lose all inhibitions and act upon their most evil thoughts. The book became an instant success due to its violent, disgusting and often disturbing imagery, and fans loved it.

After a series of Crossed book written by David Lapham, Ennis and Burrows have finally returned to the sick and depraved world he created to write the initial story arc of Crossed: Badlands, a new bi-weekly ongoing series. In this incarnation of the book, we are introduced to group of Scottish survivors that have managed to survive the Crossed outbreak by heading to rural countryside. This misfit band of survivors, which includes a book store employee, a pregnant woman and a disfigured sharpshooter who claims to be who claims to be Prince Harry, are scavenging for supplies as the Crossed close in.

Insomnium Sign With Century Media Records

Century Media Records is proud to announce the signing of INSOMNIUM who recently won the Finnish Metal Awards earlier this year for Best Band and Best Album (for the 2009 album “Across The Dark”). The band comments: “We are very happy to announce that we have signed a deal with the mighty Century Media Records. Throughout the spring and summer we negotiated with several attractive labels but in the end it was clear that Century Media would be our home for the years to come. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and genuine love for music made an instant impact on us. We are convinced that this alliance will lead to even greater achievements in the future and also avails us to tour outside Europe more often. And naturally it is a great honor for us to stand in the same team with the likes of Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Paradise Lost, The Haunted, Finntroll and Turisas. A new exciting chapter in the story of Insomnium has begun!

We want to thank Jens Prueter and the whole Century Media crew for putting their trust in us. We thank our manager Jukka Varmo for handling the negotiations very smoothly. We also wish to thank our previous label Candlelight Records for the decade that we spent with them. We salute you all!”
