Seth Rogen And Evan Goldberg Wanted Morgan Freeman For God In ‘This Is The End’

Sony’s This Is the End, the new apocalypse comedy directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is f*cking hilarious and utterly surprising. I’m going to to my best to relay this without spoiling anything for you regarding the film – but nevertheless you might want to WAIT to read this until you’ve seen the movie.

Vulture has a neat little story about what almost happened at the end of the film. Apparently they wanted Morgan Freeman to play God, or at least use his gravitas to psych out the characters. Goldberg says “The whole joke was, he shows up, and he’s like, ‘I’m God.’ And they’re like, ‘You’re God?’ And Jay [Baruchel] goes, ‘Wait, so when we were in Million Dollar Baby together, were you God then? I don’t get it.’ And then God shows up and he’s like, ‘We’re just fucking with you. This is Morgan Freeman. We just play this joke on people when they come to heaven now. Do you guys want to get high and play some video games?‘” But Freeman wasn’t game, “he rejected us for some crazy reason,” says Goldberg.

What does actually happen at the end? If you don’t know, head to theaters immediately to check out this instant classic. READ MORE

[BD Review "Editor's Choice"] ‘This Is the End’ Is An Insanely Funny Horror Gem!

Sony Pictures doesn’t want you to know this is a horror comedy. Why? Because horror and comedy don’t mix, and they don’t sell. But I assure you, dear readers, that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s This Is the End, in theaters June 12, is easily the best combo genre film since James Gunn’s SLiTHER. While it’s funny as all hell, End is absolutely loaded with horror gags, blissful violence, and super scary demons. I’m high on this horror masterpiece, so much so that it’s the first this year to receive the “Editor’s Choice” seal of approval here on Bloody Disgusting (the first two to receive were Stitches and Maniac, respectively).

Starring Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Aziz Ansari, Emma Watson, Jason Segel, David Krumholtz, Michael Cera and Rihanna all as themselves, I guarantee you’re going to love this super meta, badass comedy.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directed the living shit out of their screenplay. It’s rare to see a genre crossover like this, but Rogen and Goldberg stunned me with their understanding of the horror genre, the beats, and how to scare the audience,” I state in my review. “While This Is the End may be a comedy – one of the funniest this decade – it’s still an insanely competent horror movie that’s going to blow your collective minds.

[BD Review] ‘This Is the End’ the Best Horror Comedy Since ‘Slither’!

The best kind of comedies are based on self-deprecation. There’s nothing funnier than someone being able to poke fun at themselves, which is why so many standup comedians are great at what they do. In film, many writers and directors think the best way into an audience’s heart is through slapstick and prop gags – a cheap way to obtain laughs without doing any actual work (ie; a character tripping over a chair and falling face first into a cake). Because that route is (unfortunately) box office dynamite, it’s incredibly rare when we are gifted with an authentic comedy that’s built around great plotting, characters and payoffs.

This Is the End, which is a horror comedy (don’t let the advertising fool you), is without a shadow of doubt the funniest movie to hit theaters since Superbad or The Hangover.

In one of the most ingenious, brilliant and clever plots, This Is the End features the comedy best friends club of Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Aziz Ansari, and Emma Watson all playing themselves. This takes self-deprecation to an entirely new level as each and every of the aforementioned cast jab each other in a roast-styled comedy that’s jam-packed with gut-busting laughs.

Baruchel, a recluse who likes to play video games, eat burgers and smoke weed, is visiting Rogen from Montreal. He hates the Hollywood lifestyle, yet is convinced by Rogen to go to Franco’s housewarming party. They arrive to a starfucker extravaganza that includes bizarre moments like Robinson singing about panties alongside Rihanna, and Michael Cerra doing lines of coke and getting double-teamed in a bathroom while drinking juice packs. The internal conflict is that Baruchel hates the scene and feels like Rogen is a traitor who’s become one of “them.” Bickering ensues. During a trip to the store for smokes, a major earthquake erupts and residents are all blasted to the sky in a blue beam of light. It’s the apocalypse and the rapture is upon them.

Back at Franco’s, shit gets crazy as half the party is decimated in a sink hole, while the survivors are holed up with a psychopath (played by McBride) completely messing up the chemistry. Extreme comedy ensues.

But this is a horror website, so let’s cut the shit. This Is the End is the best horror comedy since James Gunn’s SLiTHER. The studio can hide it as much as they want, but you’ll get heavy doses of gore and extreme violence, not to mention exorcisms, demons and the mother fuckin’ Devil himself.

While most of the movie takes place inside the interior of Franco’s ridiculous new pad, the visual scope of the film is stunning as we see the Hollywood hills completely engulfed in flames, helicopters crashing, and a large-scale battle with a massive beast. The visual effects, which include the demons and Satan, look absolutely incredible.

Outside of a few messy transitions and some pacing lulls, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directed the living shit out of their screenplay. It’s rare to see a genre crossover like this, but Rogen and Goldberg stunned me with their understanding of the horror genre, the beats, and how to scare the audience. While This Is the End may be a comedy – one of the funniest this decade – it’s still an insanely competent horror movie that’s going to blow your collective minds.

Aziz Ansari Joins Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg’s ‘Apocalypse’

AzizAnsari40612 Aziz Ansari Joins Seth Rogen & Evan Goldbergs Apocalypse

Aziz Ansari (Funny People, “Parks And Rec”) has joined the cast of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Apocalypse. He’s just the latest in a long line of comedy pros to join the cast including Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson. All of the actors will be playing themselves as they are stuck in Franco’s apartment in Los Angeles facing an apocalypse.

Ansari told Grantland, “I’m doing this thing in this movie, called The Apocalypse. It’s Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride — and all those guys. And it’s basically all of us playing ourselves. Me, McBride, Jonah, Seth — everyone’s playing themselves, and the bit is James Franco’s having a party at his house, and the Apocalypse starts happening.

Earlier, Rogen elaborated on the horror roots of the project. “We want to make a horror comedy. Some of our favorite movies are like ‘Army of Darkness’ and ‘Evil Dead’, sh*t like that… Movies like ‘The Mist’, we love the idea of these movies where people are boarded up in a house together and whatever’s out there is scary but being stuck with each other is far more miserable probably.

The project is inspired by a short called “Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse” that featured Rogen and Jay Baruchel playing themselves, holed up in an apartment as they dealt with the end of the world. Rogen wrote the script with Goldberg, who will make his directorial debut on the project. Sony Pictures will finance and distribute.

Dan Aykroyd on ‘Ghostbusters 3′: Shoot in 2012 With or Without Murray

After years of near silence, Dan Aykroyd exploded on “The Dennis Miller Show” in regards to Columbia Pictures’ long delayed Ghostbusters 3, which he states will shoot in the spring of 2012 no matter what happens with the casting (in reference to Bill Murray’s contant lack of cooperation).

Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray,” he says, “That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.

As for his character, and the new plot, Aykroyd reveals quite a bit of fresh juice: “My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac,” he says, “He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.

While we reported last week that the studio is looking at Aziz Ansari for a role, Aykroyd has someone specific in mind: “I like this guy Matthew Gray Gubler from the ‘Criminal Minds’ show,” he adds, “But there’s going to be a casting. We’re going to see everyone that wants to do it. We’re going to need… three guys and a young woman.” Thanks to Shocktillyoudrop for the transcriptions.

Columbia Pictures Contemplates Aziz Ansari for ‘Ghostbusters 3′

I’ve having a super crappy day so I’m sure this will get debunked in a matter of seconds, but sources close to the project have told me that Columbia Pictures is circling Aziz Ansari for the long, long, long gestured Ghostbusters 3.

To be extremely clear, this does not mean an offer was made or that talks have even begun, it just means that Columbia is internally discussing this possibility. I thought it was awesome, therefore I’m reporting it to you.

A lot of our colleagues have a very good relationship with the comedian, so I expect Ansari to either deny the story to one of them, or blast us on Twitter by this afternoon. It’ll be funny because it’s quite possible that he hasn’t even had a conversation with the studio yet. Either way, I’ve got my fingers crossed that this becomes “official” in the coming months because he’d be perfect for it.

Ivan Reitman will (eventually) direct, with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver supposedly confirmed for roles. Bill Murray is also rumored to be the holdup. “A ragtag group of paranormal researchers reopen their notorious ghost removal service, and a new generation of Ghostbusters is brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits.” We previously reported that the new ‘Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar.
