[BD Review] ‘Bait’ Is Kind Of What You Expect It To Be

Reviewed by Michael Ferraro

Take a good look at the cover of this Blu-ray the next time you are anywhere you can find it. There is a picture of a shark swimming next to a shopping cart, with what appears to be a severed leg floating by, with this fantastic slogan right above it: Cleanup on Aisle 7. You may not be able to judge books by their covers, but for movies, the complete opposite can be said.

Bait 3D follows Josh (Xavier Samuel), who is still grieving after his best friend, Rory, is eaten by sharks during his lifeguard shift. Tina (Sharni Vinson), Rory’s sister, was about to become engaged to Josh the day of the incident and since then, her and Josh have parted ways.

During the year that passes since Rory’s death, Josh takes a job at a local shop where he stocks shelves. Conveniently (in terms of plot), Tina shows up out of nowhere with her new beau, Steven. At the same time, Doyle (Julian McMahon) is forced by an unknown man to pull a robbery on the store, which then creates a hostage situation.

Tragically, a tsunami suddenly hits the area and floods the somewhat underground store, leaving everyone inside trapped. But who finds their way inside the store too? A pair of great white sharks with an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

This is the first directorial effort by Kimble Rendall, who served mostly as a second unit director in such films as the second and third Matrix entries, Knowing, and Ghost Rider. Now, don’t pop in Bait expecting anything new with the genre. If anything, it’s a few steps higher than those oddly titled Shark films developed specifically for the home video crowd. Let’s face it, it’s certainly no Jaws. Jaws 3D maybe, but Julian McMahon is no substitute for Louis Gossett, Jr.

The disc contains the bare minimum of features; actually it includes only one: a storyboard gallery. The film was surprisingly co-written by Russell Mulcahy (Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction), and it would have been nice to have him lend his voice to a commentary to hear his thoughts on the shark genre and what inspired him to write this picture without directing.

Still, though it is predictable at every turn, some of the deaths are rather creative; it’s not like you’re watching Bait for anything other than that. Without spoiling too much, the film does end with way too many survivors. It’s not like it doesn’t have its share of death, because it does, but there are some characters you kept wishing to depart that just never do.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

[News Bites] Bond Girl Joins ‘World’s End’, ‘Dead of Winter’ Confirmed, ‘Hansel & Gretel’ Rated-”R”, And ‘Milo’ Goes ‘Project X’!

Musicvideo and commercials helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct Lionsgate’s Dead of Winter, a Black List thriller written by tyro scribe Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) attached to star, reports Variety from a scoop right here on Bloody Disgusting back in February. “Steinfeld is slated to play a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother — an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together. When a dangerous fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up, the trio must put aside the family bonding to fight for survival.” Producers are aiming for an early 2013 start date.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Rosamund Pike (Doom, Wrath of the Titans, Die Another Day) has joined The World’s End alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Edgar Wright directs the pic that starts 20 years after five childhood friends attempted an epic pub crawl. The friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. It leads into a horrific adventure.

Jonathan Daniel Brown, one of the breakout stars of Project X, is joining the cast of the New Artists Alliance’s horror comedy Milo, says THR. Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs and Peter Stormare make up the cast of the pic, which “Centers on a man (Marino) with intense stomach trouble who learns to his horror that he has a demon living in his intestines. When he gives it permission to come out during a therapy session, the man names it Milo and tries to live a life in which he, not his demon, is in charge.” Brown will play an intern who works for Marino. Jacob Vaughan is making his directorial debut on the pic, which the Duplass brothers are exec producing.

Collider has some of the most pointless news of the week as they confirmed with Paramount that their long-delayed Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D, in theaters January 11, 2013, will in fact be rated “R”. The original take on the classic fairytale, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, is set 15 years after the siblings killed the witch who kidnapped them. Hansel and Gretel have now evolved into bounty hunters who pursue witches.

Bait 3D now has a Dutch poster. It will arrive September 18 on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack from Anchor Bay. “This 3D thriller tells the story of a group of survivors in a sleepy beach town who suddenly find themselves trapped inside a submerged supermarket, following a freak tsunami.” Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson (You’re Next), Alex Russell (Chronicle), and Julian McMahon star.

Anchor Bay Acquires ‘Bait 3D,’ Will It Get 3D Release?

Anchor Bay Films has snapped up North American distribution rights to Australian horror-actioner Bait 3D, although release plans weren’t mentioned. I wonder if they’re following Piranha 3DD with a 3-D VOD release? Either way, the originally released footage was beyond terrible and looked less impressive than Universal Studios Orlando’s now defunct “Jaws: The Ride.”

Produced by Gary Hamilton, Todd Fellman and Peter Barber, pic stars Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Sharni Vinson (You’re Next, Step Up 3D), Singaporean thesps Adrian Pang and Qi Yuwu, Phoebe Tonkin, Dan Wyllie and Julian McMahon (“Nip/Tuck”).

Story’s set in a sleepy beach community where shoppers at an underground supermarket are terrorized by a crazed bandit when a tsunami swallows the town. Now trapped, with rushing water threatening to entomb them, the survivors discover the tsunami has brought unwanted visitors from the depths — hungry great white sharks.

‘Bait 3D’ Sales Trailer Plays Like a Theme Park Stunt Show!

I needed a few minutes to regain my composure after watching the sales trailer for Kimble Rendall’s Bait 3D, yes, that other 3-D shark movie.

The footage is absolutely hilarious as nearly every single aspect looks staged – it’s like watching a stunt show at Universal Studios or something (kind of reminds me of their ongoing “Waterworld” show). The shark popping out of the water looks like the cheap Jaws effect on the studio tour, the way the set is dressed makes it look terribly staged, and the shotgun cock/blast at the end reminds me of when the tour boat captain on Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” shoots at a wild Hippopotamus. Even some of the footage reminds me of when they’d ask audience members to participate in the “filming” of their movie, which they’d play it back at the end of the show!

EPIC FAIL.

Check it out inside and tell me what you think. Am I being too brash?
