Two quasi genre films arrive in theaters today, one that’s big budget popcorn fun, while the other is a self-indulgent drag. Can you guess which is which?

Here’s what I had to say about Columbia Pictures’ Battle: Los Angeles, their alien war flick from Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning director Jonathan Liebesman: “While the idea of an alien attack in absolutely terrifying, ‘Battle’ comes off more like a summer action movie with a massive scope and insane visual effects… [It] is like a wicked mix between the “Call of Duty” and “Gears of War” video games; it’s absolutely intense, face-paced and relentless.”

Also now in theaters is Twilight director Catherine Haedwicke’s Red Riding Hood, which BD’s David Harley scathed: “It’s not even that the film is bad because it deviates from the source material; it’s bad because everything from the script to the direction feels manufactured. Aside from Tom Sanders’ production design and Don Macauley’s art direction, which work together to realize a fairy tale universe just the way I imagined it, there’s nothing particularly interesting or artistic about Red Riding Hood.”

If this were actually flying in the Los Angeles skyline, I would be driving 100mph just to see it live. Man, this is so only 50% of the greatest viral stunt ever. Can you imagine the panic if this were actually viewable?

Alien invasion movies are the new cool. This became apparent when four of the major Super Bowl TV spots featured an alien attack of sorts.

My question to you is this: which of the following are you most excited for? You can watch all four TV spots in HD beyond the break.

Previously, Columbia Pictures has released two awesome trailers for Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, and we’ve seen even more extraordinary “real life” images from which the movie is based on — but what we’ve yet to see are some truly off-the-charts awesome images. This morning Empire scored a look at two new stills that look straight out of the “Gears of War” video game. Awesome is an understatement. In addition, inside you’ll find a new international poster that continues the theme of the alien “arrival”, courtesy of IMP Awards.

With any alien invasion movie the one question that always stands tall is “what do the creatures look like?” I was kinda hoping to keep my eyes E.T. virgins until March 11 when Columbia Pictures releases Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles — so much for that.

A new issue of Famous Monsters goes behind-the-scenes of the creation of “alien foot soldiers” with FX house Spectral Motion. If you want to see some heavy spoilers, take a trip indie and enjoy! I can only wonder if these are just some of the “smaller” aliens… what else does Liebesman have up his sleeve?

And seriously, how cool is it that this is kinda based on true events?

My friends and myself have been having fun in the world of conspiracy theories, and this afternoon my buddy Travis sent me this link that details the conspiracy of the 1942 “Battle of Los Angeles”. Doing a little Google search I came across an official Wiki page for the event that writes: “The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as “The Great Los Angeles Air Raid,” is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late February 24 to early February 25, 1942 over Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor.” All of the sources display the following newspaper image from the LA Times that is also used on Columbia Pictures’ teaser posters that were posted around this past July’s San Diego Comic Con. So, is Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, which arrives in theaters March 11, actually based on a true story? Do some digging – and you tell me.
