BD Reviews: ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ and ‘Red Riding Hood’

Two quasi genre films arrive in theaters today, one that’s big budget popcorn fun, while the other is a self-indulgent drag. Can you guess which is which?

Here’s what I had to say about Columbia Pictures’ Battle: Los Angeles, their alien war flick from Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning director Jonathan Liebesman: “While the idea of an alien attack in absolutely terrifying, ‘Battle’ comes off more like a summer action movie with a massive scope and insane visual effects… [It] is like a wicked mix between the “Call of Duty” and “Gears of War” video games; it’s absolutely intense, face-paced and relentless.

Also now in theaters is Twilight director Catherine Haedwicke’s Red Riding Hood, which BD’s David Harley scathed: “It’s not even that the film is bad because it deviates from the source material; it’s bad because everything from the script to the direction feels manufactured. Aside from Tom Sanders’ production design and Don Macauley’s art direction, which work together to realize a fairy tale universe just the way I imagined it, there’s nothing particularly interesting or artistic about Red Riding Hood.

Battle: Los Angeles

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

The “Real” Battle of Los Angeles, Experts Reflect on Anniversary of “Sighting”

In anticipation of the March 11th release of Columbia Pictures’ Battle: Los Angeles, a film about the efforts of a team of military personnel to thwart an alien invasion in the City of Angels, the studio recently staged a press conference with a group of “UFO experts” to talk about both the real Battle of Los Angeles – an intriguing, little-known event that took place in the skies above Santa Monica on February 24th and 25th, 1942 (can you say “anniversary“?) – as well as their own anecdotal experiences with UFO phenomena. See inside for the full story, as related by B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen.

Aliens Attack Super Bowl: HD TV Spots for ‘Super 8,’ ‘Battle: Los Angeles,’ ‘Transformers 3′ & ‘Cowboys & Aliens’!

Alien invasion movies are the new cool. This became apparent when four of the major Super Bowl TV spots featured an alien attack of sorts.

My question to you is this: which of the following are you most excited for? You can watch all four TV spots in HD beyond the break.

Super 8: The J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg collaboration that is said to follow a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties – and when they develop the film they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame. In theaters June 10 from Paramount Pictures.

Battle: Los Angeles: Jonathan Liebesman’s sci-fi horror film inspired by true events. For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. In theaters March 11 from Columbia Pictures.

Cowboys & Aliens: Jon Favreau’s awesome looking alien flick that begins when a spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way. In theaters July 29 from Universal Pictures.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon: Michael Bay’s third film in the franchise that begins when the Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets, which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle. New ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Channels ‘Gears of War’ for Inspiration

March 11th can’t get here soon enough. Previously, Columbia Pictures has released two awesome trailers for Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, and we’ve seen even more extraordinary “real life” images from which the movie is based on — but what we’ve yet to see are some truly off-the-charts awesome images. This morning Empire scored a look at two new stills that look straight out of the “Gears of War” video game. Awesome is an understatement. In addition, inside you’ll find a new international poster that continues the theme of the alien “arrival”, courtesy of IMP Awards.

Beware the “Foot” in First ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Alien Images!

With any alien invasion movie the one question that always stands tall is “what do the creatures look like?” I was kinda hoping to keep my eyes E.T. virgins until March 11 when Columbia Pictures releases Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles — so much for that.

A new issue of Famous Monsters goes behind-the-scenes of the creation of “alien foot soldiers” with FX house Spectral Motion. If you want to see some heavy spoilers, take a trip indie and enjoy! I can only wonder if these are just some of the “smaller” aliens… what else does Liebesman have up his sleeve?

And seriously, how cool is it that this is kinda based on true events?

Second Action-Packed Trailer for ‘Battle: Los Angeles’

My most-anticipated of 2011 list is short, but it does begin with Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, his alien invasion war flick arriving in theaters March 11. Columbia Pictures has released a second trailer featuring more scares, more aliens and more war. The scariest aspect is that this film is inspired by a true story. Yup. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo, and Michael Peña, for years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. ‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Based on True Story?!

My friends and myself have been having fun in the world of conspiracy theories, and this afternoon my buddy Travis sent me this link that details the conspiracy of the 1942 “Battle of Los Angeles”. Doing a little Google search I came across an official Wiki page for the event that writes: “The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as “The Great Los Angeles Air Raid,” is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late February 24 to early February 25, 1942 over Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred less than three months after the United States entered World War II as a result of the Japanese Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor.” All of the sources display the following newspaper image from the LA Times that is also used on Columbia Pictures’ teaser posters that were posted around this past July’s San Diego Comic Con. So, is Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles, which arrives in theaters March 11, actually based on a true story? Do some digging – and you tell me.
