The Last Voyage of the Demeter

“Demeter” is the name of the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England in Bram Stoker’s classic tale.

The story, penned by Bragi Schut Jr., is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain’s log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.

Written by Bragi Schut, it’s said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.

Eliza Graves

Brad Anderson is directing the tale that is loosely based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s early works, a 1945 short story titled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. Beckinsale will play the title character of Eliza, a Harvard Medical School grad who takes a job at an insane asylum, falling for one of the doctors but then discovering that the occupants have taken it over.

The Boxtrolls

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

‘Harry Potter’ Wizard Turns To Terror In ‘Eliza Graves’

Deadline writes about the Brad Anderson-directed thriller Eliza Graves is based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe and begins production next week.

What’s interesting, besides the new cast, is that if it makes it, the Millennium Films project will mark the end of a long road for screenwriter Joseph Gangemi, who penned the script adapting “The System Of Doctor Tarr And Professor Fether” 15 years ago, with three studios taking a crack at it before Millennium acquired U.S. rights at the last American Film Market.

Now David Thewlis (pictured; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and Brendan Gleeson (Gangs of New York, The Raven) have joined a cast that already includes Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine in a thriller “about a young doctor who comes to apprentice at a mental institution and meets a beautiful patient that he falls in love with amidst a set of difficult circumstances, which may be more complicated than they seem.

Bruce Davey, Mel Gibson (yeah, this is random), Mark Amin and Cami Winikoff are producing. Executive producers are David Higgins, Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman and Mark Gill.

Michael Caine And Ben Kingsley Dig ‘Eliza Graves’

Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Call) continues to stack up the interesting names for Eliza Graves, his psychological thriller from Nu Image/Millennium. The tale is loosely based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s early works, a 1945 short story titled The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

Now he’s roped in a couple of heavy hitters in the form of Michael Caine (pictured above; The Dark Knight, Jaws IV) and Ben Kingsley (Ghandi, Sexy Beast, Iron Man 3), per Deadline. No word as to the nature of their roles just yet.

They join the previously announced Jim Sturgess and Kate Beckinsale. “Sturgess will star as a Harvard Medical School grad who takes a job a mental institution which the inmates have taken over and are posing as doctors. He becomes obsessed with the title character (Beckinsale), one of the patients.

Joe Gangemi wrote the script. Producing are Bruce Davey, Mel Gibson, Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli. David Higgins, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman are executive producing.

A June 24th production start date in Bulgaria is set.

Marvel Unveils Ben Kingsley As Mandarin In ‘Iron Man 3′ Poster

Alas, Marvel has finally revealed Ben Kingsley as Mandarin in the latest character poster for Iron Man 3. They clearly went with the early look of Mandarin, not the suited up version we saw in Matt Fraction’s most recent run. Of course he’s got some modern accessories, and some dragon-embroidered camouflage pants. Check it out!

LAIKA Shifts Focus From ‘ParaNorman’ To ‘The Boxtrolls’

I didn’t love ParaNorman, I found it to be a gorgeous looking film with a cool concept but a snoozer of a script. But I’m very hopeful for The Boxtrolls. As long as the book it’s based on, Alan Snow‘s “Here Be Monsters”, has a reasonably compelling narrative they’re already off to a better start. And if whomever writes the script can translate that well, even better.

The studios behind ParaNorman, LAIKA and Focus, are teaming up on the new 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman). Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan will provide their voices to the film.

The film is, “a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to The Boxtrolls while Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada). It is set for release October 17th, 2014. READ MORE

‘Iron Man 3′ Trailer Already Better Than Anything In ‘Iron Man 2′

Nope. Not even remotely horror. But since this is the “Comics” page, we figured we’d be remiss in our duties to you if we didn’t report on some of the bigger comic-related news here and there – and the trailer for Iron Man 3 certainly qualifies. And I dig this trailer, it hints at a much more focussed (and darker) narrative than the utter mess that was . The fact that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) is behind the wheel for this one gets me legitimately excited.

The film, “ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley. It opens May 13th, 2013. Head inside for the trailer! READ MORE

Tony Stark Advances ‘Iron Man 3′ Armor To Mark XLVII?!

A massive Iron Man 3 spoiler has made its way online via Latino Review who reveals that Tony Stark may have something special on his “mind”.

Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., has shown off quite a few different Iron Man armors between Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, now he’s (SPOILER) skipping ahead… by XXXIX generations.

The Iron Man 3 footage at the San Diego Comic-Con showed that Stark could summon the new armor piece-by-piece. It’s been revealed that this armor is to help Stark in battle against the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) by creating drones to fight side-by-side!

Says Latino Review: “The Extremis-enhanced bad guys under direction of Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin villain are going to be too much for Tony to handle on his own, so he thinks ahead, thinks big and has a plan. Tony’s about to go out and fight some bad guys when he mentions the Mark XLVII to Pepper Potts. Pepper asks what happened to the other forty and Tony just smiles.

From the cockpit of Mark XLVII Tony is able to control multiple armors in battle. We over here at LR have been vaguely aware of an action scene where Tony was going to control multiple Iron Man suits (presumably they look similar to distract his enemies as to the location of kill-able Iron Man Prime), but the number 40 seems…awesome. 40 Iron Men.

The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, and Guy Pearce.

Iron Man 3 opens May 3, 2013. READ MORE

Viggo Mortensen Offered Lead In Dracula Tale, ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’

Some interesting news landed on our doorstep for Millenium Films’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the ex-Summit/Sony Screen Gems project that’s been in development hell since 2004. Movement was confirmed back in May when Dog Soldiers, Doomsday and The Descent‘s Neil Marshall was attached to direct. Now we’ve got more from the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England.

Although yet to be confirmed, we’re told Ben Kingsley is still attached to play the film’s Captain. In addition, Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, The Road, The Lord of the Rings) has been offered the lead role of “Henry Clemens,” a source exclusively reveals to Bloody. There’s no real word on Noomi Rapace, coming off Prometheus, other than she “may” still be starring as “Anna Billington.” I can only guess it comes down to scheduling, especially with a movie that’s been stuck ashore for nearly a decade.

The latest draft was written by Lowell Cauffiel and is said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger. READ MORE
