Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio, starring Toby Jones and Tonia Sotiropoulou, is now available on various VOD Platforms. To keep the hype train rolling, IFC released this creative new artistic poster for the thriller, which we’ve placed alongside our exclusive clip.

Acquired out of the fests by IFC Films, the pic is “Set in 1976: Gilderoy is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by Italian horror maestro, Santini. As time and realities shift, Gilderoy is lost in a spiral of sonic and personal mayhem, and has to confront his own demons in order to stay afloat.”

The new issue of EW shares a new look at both Ender’s Game, starring Ben Kingsley, as well as the Stephen King adaptation “Under the Dome.” We also have the theatrical and VOD trailer for IFC’s Tied, and a crappy new one sheet for their Berberian Sound Studio (review).

Game, starring Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, and Hailee Steinfeld star. Ender’s Game, directed by Gavin Hood, opens theatrically on November 1st. “70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.”

“‘Under the Dome’ is the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from, and if and when it will go away.” The 13-episode summer series will premiere June 24th on CBS. Man, the Stanley Film Festival really came out of the gate swinging. It’s the first year for the Fest, which will be held May 2-5 at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Some of the films playing? Aftershock, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, Frankenstein’s Army, Maniac, Tower Block and V/H/S/2. That’s not even the half of it.

The mission statement, “The Stanley Film Festival is a unique opportunity to showcase exhilarating voices in classic and contemporary horror within a haunted space chosen to amplify the experience beyond the terrors shown on screen. Armed with the goal of procuring the most imaginative tales of fright from around the globe, we will proudly present short and feature films that offer a vast spectrum of tantalizing thrills and ghastly delights throughout the weekend. Eli Roth will be on hand to receive the Inaugural Visionary Award and will do a Q&A after Aftershock, which closes the Fest. I can’t even believe how happy I am to enter the New Year. These 2013 horror movie preview lits were a lot of work, but well worth it. Over the past several days we’ve shared with you all of the great genre films we’ll be seeing in theaters next year, everything from a new Evil Dead to a new Sin City and Machete.

With the end comes the indie films, and the leftovers, which includes various titles from Magnet, Anchor Bay, IFC, among a few that could end up premiering at the 2013 film festivals. I recently has a few conversations with people about posting “Worst of the Year” lists as it’s in a way “kicking a dog when it’s down.” Time could be better spent sending positive energy into the world, but on the same token it’s our job to critique films; we are supposed to provide advice on what you should and shouldn’t see.

With that said, it doesn’t provide me with any pleasure to list out this year’s biggest disappointments – but without the bad, how can we learn from other people’s mistakes? If there’s anything to take away from these films, it’s learning what not to do in film. The biggest lesson this year? Don’t pretend to be a horror fan to cash in on our loyalty (I’m looking at you Smiley). READ MORE

The 8th annual Fantastic Fest ends for me after 6 days. The sci/fi, fantasy, martial arts, Asian fantastic, and horror film festival offers up a little something for all genre lovers. Sadly, I cannot make it through the entire 8-day span as I have two daughters to take care of and a book to write.

It is my duty to bring you the most horror and/or horror-related film reviews possible. With less than 20 feature films considered to be true horror, I will occasionally spotlight other non-horror films that will, hopefully, appeal to our readers here at Bloody Disgusting.

Be sure to be on the lookout in Austin, Texas from October 25-27, 2013, for my very own Housecore Horror Film Festival. I will be joined by my partner, former Pantera lead singer and heavy metal legend Philip H. Anselmo. We will be bringing 100% horror and heavy metal to the Lone Star state!

[TIFF '12 Review] Brad Absolutely Hates ‘Berberian Sound Studio’

Bummmer! I was really looking forward to Berberian Sound Studio, but word out of TIFF has not been kind. The Peter Strickland directed, Toby Jones starring film looked like a stylish homage to 70′s giallo films. Apparently I was wrong. At least that’s what Brad (Mr. Disgusting) is telling me.

“Boy, was I excited to see this film. I’d heard great things. I love the world – the concept of a sound designer working with an iconic Italian horror director during the 1970s, a time when all Italian genre films were shot without sound and designed with different spoken languages during post-production, is brilliant. Great cast. Obviously quality production values. So know that if I say I hated this movie, I went into it with more than an open mind. And I HATED this movie..”

[BD Review] ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ Is Punishing, Self-Indulgent Art

Boy, was I excited to see this film. I’d heard great things. I love the world – the concept of a sound designer working with an iconic Italian horror director during the 1970s, a time when all Italian genre films were shot without sound and designed with different spoken languages during post-production, is brilliant. Great cast. Obviously quality production values. So know that if I say I hated this movie, I went into it with more than an open mind. And I HATED this movie.

Berberian Sound Studio is self indulgent filmmaking that’s so arrogant, and so self consumed that it completely forgets about the audience. It’s a pretentious art piece solely made for film snobs – I can’t even imagine a single Bloody reader making it through its entirety. Collective sighs and groans littered the theater between each obnoxious transition (where “Silencio” flashes across the screen), and each moment of on screen silence was interrupted by the sounds of people shuffling to rush out of the theater.

Only one word is needed to describe Berberian Sound Studio: “exhausting”.

By the time the end credits roll the audience will be emotionally exhausted – especially after watching countless scenes go nowhere; it’s not just boring, it’s punishing. Toby Jones is incredibly underused (it’s insulting to cast such a talent and then castrate him), being that his character also never evolves by the final frame. If anything, the movie never progresses past the first act as the final hour just continually repeats itself – It’s like fighting in circles with your ex-girl/boyfriend for an hour (remember how much fun that was?).

Berberian Sound Studio is a calling card for Peter Strickland. It’s an incredibly well shot piece of art that puts on display how talented he is as a director – but not as a storyteller. And while beautifully crafted, it’s impossible to recommend this to anyone who hopes to have an entertaining movie-going experience.

Clive Owen (below; Children of Men, Sin City, Shoot ‘Em Up, Intruders) is in talks to replace “House” star Hugh Laurie as the villain in MGM’s reboot of RoboCop, reports Deadline and Variety. He would star alongside Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in the Jose Padilha-directed reboot in theaters August 9, 2013. Laurie was to play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes Robocop.

IFC Midnight has acquired all U.S. rights to director Peter Strickland’s psychological horror film Berberian Sound Studio (pictured above), “Set in 1976, pic takes place at one of the cheapest, sleaziest post-production facilities in Italy, where a naive and introverted sound engineer from England is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by a horror maestro.” Strickland also wrote the screenplay for the film, which stars Toby Jones, Cosimo Fusco, Antonio Mancino, Fatma Mohamed, Tonia Sotiropolou, and Salvatore Li Causi. Film previously screened at the Locarno Film Festival and Edinburgh Film Festival. It will also be playing at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Variety reports.

NBC’s “Hannibal” has cast a new member of Laurence Fishburne’s investigative team. According to THR, Hettienne Park (below) has joined the upcoming adaptation of the Thomas Harris books. Park will recur as Beverly Katz, a bright-eyed yet weary crime scene investigator who specializes in working with fibers. She’s part of a team of three who piece evidence together. When she first encounters Will (Hugh Dancy), she confronts the criminal profiler about his unusual role with the FBI and flags the special treatment he receives. While the duo initially clashes, their relationship could potentially become a romantic one. Mads Mikkelsen will play the psychiatrist-turned-serial killer in the 13-episode dramatic take from “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller.

20th Century Fox has set Wes Ball (watch a trailer for his short “The Ruin” inside) to direct The Maze Runner, an adaptation of the James Dashner dystopian novel. “‘The Maze Runner’ is a post-apocalyptic setting. The protagonist, Thomas, who after having his memory wiped is deposited in a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze. He soon learns they are part of a mysterious test, and finds it is his destiny to join the ‘maze runners’ and lead them to freedom.” Peter Kang and Daria Cercek are overseeing at the studio. Written and directed by Peter Strickland, with Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Mist) set to star, Berberian Sound Studio is an Italian horror drama set in 1976.

The title Berberian Sound Studio eludes to “one of the cheapest, sleaziest post-production studios in Italy. Only the most sordid horror films have their sound processed and sharpened in this studio.

Gilderoy, a naive and introverted sound engineer from England is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by horror maestro, Santini. Thrown from the innocent world of local documentaries into a foreign environment fuelled by exploitation, Gilderoy soon finds himself caught up in a forbidding world of bitter actresses, capricious technicians and confounding bureaucracy. The longer Gilderoy spends mixing screams and the bloodcurdling sounds of hacked vegetables, the more homesick he becomes for his garden shed studio in his hometown of Dorking. His mother’s letters alternate between banal gossip and an ominous hysteria, which gradually mirrors the black magic of Santini’s film. As both time and realities shift, Gilderoy finds himself lost in an otherworldly spiral of sonic and personal mayhem, and has to confront his own demons in order to stay afloat in an environment ruled by exploitation both on and off screen.”
