[SXSW '13] Corey Mitchell’s Day 2: Short Cuts

After all the hype (and massive letdown) from Day 1 at SXSW in the form of The Evil Dead remake, my second day viewing consisted of 18 short films over two blocks. The first, Shorts Program 1, did not provide any Bloody Disgusting-worthy material other than a brief crime scene shot featured in Kat Candler’s brilliant Black Metal, which was featured here in whole this past January. (I also worked on the film as a crime and music scene consultant and as music supervisor.)

The second block, however, is where the beefy center was located — the Midnight Shorts — at 9:00pm. Go figure? SXSW Shorts Programmer Claudette Godfrey appropriately set the tone with beer in hand and F-bombs on her lips, despite the early hour. What followed was a mixed-leaning-towards-solid bag of sex, guns, and shrubs. READ MORE

Janaza: Female-Fronted, Anti-Islamic, Middle Eastern Black Metal

The Atlantic, one of the few magazines that I steal from my parents any time I visit, has a fascinating article about Janaza, Iraq’s first female-fronted black metal band. The article mixes information as well as an interview with singer Anahita, who performs this kind of music as a response to seeing religiously motivated violence all around her.

The reason I find this article to be so fascinating is that this listening to or performing this kind of music in Iraq (and many other highly religious areas) is not only a serious no-no, it’s a crime that is punishable by death. In fact, in this article, Anahita states that if religious authorities caught her, “…They would kill me, and kill all of my friends, by cutting off our heads.”

Written by Kim Kelly, I highly recommend reading the article as it provides fresh insight into what it means be a metal musician in an environment that truly wishes to shut you down. Below you can hear their song “Burn The Pages of Quran”. READ MORE

OMFG Of The Day: How To Be Both Vegan And Metal…While Cooking

When I think of stereotypical black metal, I think of ritualistic sacrifices involving lambs, virgins, sheep, babies, and other assorted meaty goodness. Never once did it cross my mind that there are vegan black metal fans out there. I mean, it just seems like such an oxymoron, right? Well, I am completely mistaken and I am not ashamed to admit it. My eyes have been opened by the Vegan Metal Chef. Check out the second episode after the jump for some hilarious cooking ideas that will ensure you can be both metal and vegan.

Norway has taken to educating their diplomats on the intricacies and history of TNBM – True Norwegian Black Metal. You might be asking, “Why?” Well, my dear reader, follow along on this journey!

Norwegian Diplomats Trained In Black Metal
So, it turns out that Norwegian diplomats around the world (there are 106 missions total) are being asked about the music genre since its popularity keeps increasing. As a result, aspiring diplomats are being trained so that they can take on these questions. That’s basically the gist of the story, but if you want more details, check out the article HERE.

Album Review: Ulver’s War Of The Roses

Ulver (Norwegian for ‘wolves’) are a black metal band that incorporates elements of symphonic styles, electronica, folk, ambient, and avant-garde. With so many styles in one project, you’ve got to tread carefully to make sure that everything works together and doesn’t end up butting heads, resulting in a musical mess. So with their newest release, ‘War of the Roses’, has Ulver managed to pull off this feat? Check after the jump to find out!
