[Blu-ray Review] ‘Piranha 3DD’ Is Humorless

Reviewed by Mike Ferraro

Let’s face it – you’re not about to watch Piranha 3DD because you think it is going to be a fantastic exercise in thrilling horror. When the slogan of the film includes the line, “Double the D’s” (and they’re not talking about dinosaurs or dwarves), you should know what to expect. And while there are certainly a fair amount of “d’s” in this picture, Piranha 3DD mostly ends up failing in creating both a campy and entertaining experience.

A year after the events in Piranha 3D, a nearby lake becomes the new home to these deadly fish. Maddy (Danielle Panabaker), a marine biology major, comes home for the summer to work at the water park she co-owns with her creepy stepfather Chet (David Koechner). For clever marketing purposes (and an attempt to bring more revenue to the park), Chet has turned this once family friendly water park into a haven for strippers. He also hired David Hasselhoff (as himself) to be a guest lifeguard on opening day (so expect a lot of jokes relating to his career). READ MORE

JAWS040612

‘Jaws’ Swims In Crystal Clear Waters On Blu-ray!!!

Jaws – the landmark motion picture that still makes audiences afraid to go in the water – comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever on August 14th, 2012. Featuring an all-new, digitally remastered and fully restored picture, as well as 7.1 surround sound, the Jaws Blu-ray Combo Pack with DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet gives fans the ultimate way to watch the breathtaking and terrifying action-thriller!

One of the most influential motion pictures of all time and nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, Jaws stars Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss and Oscar nominees Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw. Produced by legendary filmmakers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown, the film earned an Oscar for composer John Williams’ instantly recognizable minimalist score, as well as Oscars for Best Editing and Best Sound. When it was first released in 1975, Jaws smashed box-office records and became the highest-grossing film of its era, earning Spielberg a reputation as a Hollywood visionary. Today, it remains one of the highest-grossing films in motion-picture history[1] and is largely considered the film that launched the summer blockbuster.

Jaws is one of 13 classic Universal films to be digitally remastered and fully restored from 35mm original film elements as part of Universal’s ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration. The Jaws restoration began with researching and evaluating the existing film elements to determine the best means to restore the film. Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film elements shot by shot and frame by frame. Following the picture restoration, Universal Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic Jaws soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu-ray for the latest home theater technology. The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s post-production team to ensure the integrity of Spielberg’s original vision remained intact.

Below you’ll find two examples of the new transfer, along with a behind-the-scenes doc! There we’ve also included the massive list of extra features, along with the release’s cover art. It’s time to celebrate the summer movie that started it all in crystal clear waters!! READ MORE

[Double Dip This!] ‘Battle Royale’: Arrow Films vs. Anchor Bay

After a little over a decade, Battle Royale was finally picked up by Anchor Bay for stateside distribution. We were thankfully not subjected to a 3D release, but the film did begin a brief theatrical run late last year, eleven years after it was originally unleashed on the world. Now, after being almost impossible to distribute due to post-Columbine backlash and MPAA concerns – try imagining this thing cut down to an R and tell me there would even be a movie left. READ MORE

Horror In Your House: March 27th, 2012

A slow week for big horror titles, but there is an interesting Roger Corman documentary, Corman’s World, which is definitely worth a watch for the fans of all things low budget and sleazy. Which should be everyone reading this. Enjoy your week and check out the rest of the releases below.

CAMEL SPIDERS (DVD/Blu-ray) Anchor Bay Home Entertainment

Based on actual creatures that, for years, have tormented our armed forces in the Middle East, Camel Spiders have now invaded the southwestern deserts of the United States, freely hunting for prey and unafraid of any predator – including man. No place is safe, no one is beyond their paralyzing sting. In the end, a small band of hearty fighters are forced to make one last stand against the creatures.

MICAH SAYS: Are these even real?I always thought the pictures of giant Camel Spiders were Web hoaxes circa 2002. Of course, if they were real that would be bad ass. Too bad this movie has awful CGI. READ MORE

New ‘Mother’s Day’ Trailer Invades Your Home, Lays Down Some Rules

mothersdaynew080311 New Mothers Day Trailer Invades Your Home, Lays Down Some Rules

Anchor Bay Films is gearing up for the May 8th Blu-ray/DVD release of Mother’s Day with this new trailer, and I think it’s a significant improvement over the last one.

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) with screen story and screenplay by Scott Milam based on the original Mother’s Day written by Charles Kaufman and Warren Leight, Mother’s Day is a graphic remake of the Troma horror classic. “After a bank robbery gone wrong, three brothers go home to hideout…only to discover that their Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) lost their house in a foreclosure. The new owners and their party guests become the depraved brothers’ unwitting hostages. Their sadistic Mother soon arrives and brilliantly takes control of the situation, ratcheting up the terror. As the hostages struggle desperately to survive the harrowing torture, they realize that there is nothing a Mother won’t do to protect her children.”

Mother’s Day will also have an exclusive theatrical engagement in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago on May 4th in select theaters.

‘The Wicker Tree’ Clip, Making-Of Featurette

The Wicker Tree Clip, Making Of Featurette

On April 24th Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the Wicker Man companion piece, The Wicker Tree, on both Blu-ray and DVD. Set in the same universe as the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, the film is written and directed by the original helmer, Robin Hardy, who also reunited with the original producer Peter Snell and venerable UK production company British Lion to bring a chilling new vision of this classic story to 21st century audiences, after a theatrical run.

We continue to take you behind-the-scenes of the hotly anticipated spin-off with the following exclusive making-of featurette and clip, with another trio of clips already released here.

Based on Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” “ ‘The Wicker Tree’ tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, “The Bill,” “Skins”), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish, Rambo, the upcoming The Hobbit films).

However, Beth’s and Steve’s message of personal chastity quickly comes into direct conflict with Tressock’s sexual and religious practices, drawing upon ancient Celtic beliefs and rituals. Temptations begin to challenge Beth and Steve – with the stakes no less than their very lives and souls…

Bonus features on The Wicker Tree Blu-ray and DVD include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

Lee, who played the mysterious Lord Summerisle in the original, returns again in a dramatic cameo. Rounding out the cast are Jacqueline Leonard as Lady Delia Morrison, Clive Russell as Beame, James Mapes as Reverend Moriarty and Honeysuckle Weeks as Lolly. READ MORE

Horror In Your House: March 20th, 2012

Horror In Your House: March 20th, 2012

Battle Royale on Blu-ray is finally here thanks to Anchor Bay. And it’s just in time for you to watch again before the PG-13 version Hunger Games hits theaters. In other news, the most despised horror flick of 2011 is available for purchase. That film is none other than Creature. There’s also some rumors out there (and a few confirmed cases) that C.H.U.D. 2 and Ghoulies 3 have been dumped on DVD for the first time (North America) in a 8-pack combo available at select Walmarts. Fans of those flicks might want to do some digging thru the bargain bins.

BATTLE ROYALE (DVD / Blu-ray) (Complete Edition and Regular) – Anchor Bay

42 high school students are forced to kill each other on an uninhabited island.

MICAH SAYS: Most obvious PICK OF THE WEEK in some time. I had the chance to watch and review the Blu-ray. Some notes: The quality ranges from stunning to atrocious, with the artifacting being very noticeable and distracting in places (I watched the Director’s Cut). The audio, on the other hand, is great throughout. Even with a few small nitpicks, it’s still the biggest must buy of the year so far. The Complete Edition contains the sequel and a considerable amount of special features.

CREATURE – Arc Entertainment

Revolves around a group of family and friends who, en route to New Orleans, are sidetracked in the Louisiana bayou and encounter a monster named Lockjaw who is revered by the locals as a god.

MICAH SAYS: The people responsible for this crap love to defend it. Creature is undeniably garbage. The most recent “in defense” was written by one of the actors and he basically said viewers approached this film wrong with too critical of a lens. Well, here’s what I expected: An old school monster movie with genre favorite Sid Haig. Here’s what I got: A piece of nonsensical sh*t featuring Sid Haig. And I didn’t’ see this in an empty theater, I saw it how the filmmakers intended, at a packed theater (only full because it was free/radio promo thing). Almost everyone there left howling at the awfulness (if they didn’t dart out early). This was before all the negative hype started appearing on the web. Bottom line: Creature is a sh*tty movie and rightfully earned every one of it’s “Worst of the Year” awards. Move on, get tougher skin and make a better movie next time. Horror fans are a forgiving bunch.

DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL – Pumpkin Patch Pictures

A couple leave everything behind moving to San Francisco with their son. When they lose him in a tragic accident, they realize there’s an evil presence that doesn’t want them there. Forced to come to grips with the supernatural reality haunting them, they seek the help of a psychic to get rid of the evil spirit.

FUNERAL HOME (1981) – CFS Releasing

The 1980s retro horror classic! Young and easily frightened 16-year old Heather is called to stay with her grandmother in the hopes of helping her turn an old funeral home into a bed-and-breakfast. But strange happenings and unexplained murders around the home quickly make this vacation spot a “dead-and-breakfast” – with no answers as to who or what is causing all the death. Well-executed gloomy thriller in the Hitchcock vein. READ MORE

Three leaders in the Japanese splatter movement — Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Tak Sakaguchi (Yoroi: Samurai Zombie) — join forces to bring three times the heart-pounding action, three times the jaw-dropping comedy and three times the head-exploding splatter of your average action/horror/comedy with Mutant Girls Squad, debuting on Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack and DVD May 22nd from Well Go USA Entertainment.

A soon-to-be cult film from the prolific Japanese cult film label Sushi Typhoon, Mutant Girls Squad is touted as a warped version of X-MEN, adapted into the violent, body-horror-filled universe of the three directors. Mutant Girls Squad focuses on Rin, a beautiful 16-year-old who experiences one hell of a coming-of-age when her birthday present from nature comes in the form of a shocking revelation. The film stars Yumi Sugimoto, Yuko Takayama, Suzuka Morita and Naoto Takenaka.

Bonus materials include the “Opening Day” and “The Making of Mutant Girls Squad” featurettes, interviews with the filmmakers and the short film Yoshi Zero, a prequel by Noboru Iguchi focusing on the character portrayed by Suzuka Morita.

Rin (Yumi Sugimoto) has always felt like an outcast among her classmates and peers, and as she’s about to turn sixteen, she finds out why — while her mother (Maiko Ito) is human, her dad (Kanji Tsuda) is a Hiruko, a race of mutant creatures whose bodies transform themselves in strange ways and can sprout weapons at will. Defense Minister Koshimizu (Naoto Takenaka) has launched a crusade to eliminate the Hirukos in the name of public safety, but Rin’s father tells her of an underground Hiruko alliance who are fighting for their right to survive, and after the death of her parents, Rin makes her way to a training camp for young Hirukos. Rin, who now has long blades where her fingers used to be, teams up with fellow teenage warriors Rei (Yuko Takayama), Yoshie (Suzuka Morita), Sachie (Cay Izumi) and Chiako (Naoi Nagano), all of whom have unique bodily weapons of their own, as they set out to take down Koshimizu.” READ MORE

Halle Berry’s Berries Continue To Hypnotize Us To See ‘Dark Tide’

3darktide030612 Halle Berrys Berries Continue To Hypnotize Us To See Dark Tide

The first clip has surfaced (and quickly sinks) from Wrekin Hill Entertainment and Lionsgate’s Dark Tide, their shark thriller from Turistas director John Stockwell. The clip is extremely weak even by weak standards. But I digress, there are two real reasons why we’re all going to watch this and they can be thoroughly enjoyed after the break (and above the clip). When you’re done enlarging them (this article is wrong on so many levels), click the above new image for the entire hi-res gallery that was just uploaded.

The flick leads off with a three-week Ultra VOD window on March 8th with a theatrical release on March 30th, culminating in a packaged media and Digital Download release, the Halle Berry thriller will head to home video on April 8.

Kate (Halle Berry), shark naturalist and documentarian, has been reluctant to re-enter the water since the tragic death of her mentor. Once renowned for swimming with Great White Sharks without the protection of a cage, Kate now spends her days giving mundane wildlife tours. However, the surprise arrival of her old partner and boyfriend, Jeff (Olivier Martinez), convinces her to face her inner demons and get back in the water with the fiercest of predators.

Horror In Your House: March 6th, 2012

Horror In Your House: March 6th, 2012

This week’s release list is a short one, but have no fear Deadheads is here…to make you laugh and fall in love. Also available to crash into your home is Ed Wood’s infamous classic Plan 9 From Outer Space on Blu-ray. Yes, someone somewhere said to themselves, “Man, you know what movie should be on Blu? Plan 9?” Even crazier, someone agreed and made it a reality. All I can say to those brave thinkers is, “Thank you, you crazy bastards.”

DEADHEADS (pictured above) – Freestyle Digital Media

Two zombie slackers, Mike and Brent, find themselves surprisingly reborn from the dead amid a disastrous zombie outbreak. After discovering an engagement ring in his coat pocket, Mike enlists his new found zombie pal, Brent, to embark on a quest in search of his lost love. What ensues is a hilarious cross country road trip as these two reformed flesh-eating pals hitch-hike across the country as they are pursued by a team of zombie killin’ bounty hunters!

MICAH SAYS: Initially touted as the American Shaun of the Dead, which is isn’t. It is, however, a fun zomedy that centers more on romance than horror. Sure, some of the jokes fall flat, but there is plenty to like in the affectionate homage. PICK OF THE WEEK

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (Blu-ray) – Legend Films, Inc

Hailed as the worst film of all time, Ed Woods cult classic Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of the most hilariously entertaining movies you will ever see. Aliens fear the human race will develop a deadly ‘solaranite bomb.’ After eight failed attempts, Plan 9 is their scheme to reanimate earth s dead to build a zombie army and stop the earthlings from destroying the universe. With string powered flying saucers, twisted alien logic and ‘priceless’ special effects, it is a movie mission destined for success, or not!

MICAH SAYS: Yes, because this film NEEDS to be on Blu-ray. I’ve seen this film a couple times and it’s bad charm is undeniable. I am curious to how the transfer looks, not that it matters one bit. This movie is a jumbled mess of interplanetary proportions. Much love.

REQUIEM FOR THE DAMNED – Hannover House

Edgar Allan Poe. For nearly two hundred years his stories of the macabre have shocked and terrified audiences. And now, inspired by five of Poe’s most terrifying tales, five filmmakers have banded together to create the ultimate tribute to the master: Edgar Allan Poe’s Requiem For The Damned – featuring adaptations of : The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Murders in the Rue Morgue.

MICAH SAYS: POE. What was that movie that had Vincent Price playing a part in three separate Poe stories? I want to watch that again. As for this effort, my thought is you can never have enough Poe in your life. Certainly worth a rent / Netflix. READ MORE

Tara Reid Starrer ‘The Fields’ Dated For Home Video

Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman’s (Fox’s “Raising Hope”) thriller The Fields is coming to Blu-ray (SRP $29.99) and DVD (SRP $24.99) from Breaking Glass Pictures (5 Star Day, Cropsey, The Living Wake) on April 24. Written by Harrison Smith (Six Degrees of Hell) and directed by Tom Mattera and David Mazzoni (cult favorite The 4th Dimension), the film also stars Tara Reid and newcomer Joshua Ormond (Sundance hit Robot and Frank). Extras include a making-of documentary, behind-the-scenes footage, hilarious Leachman outtakes, interviews with the real people involved, and clips from the world premiere.

Based on actual events, The Fieldsfollows a young boy named Steven during the summer of 1973. Steven (Ormond) is sent to live in the Pennsylvania countryside with his grandparents while his mother (Reid) and father (Faust Checho) work through their marital troubles. Though his grandmother (Leachman) and grandfather (Bev Appleton) are happy to host him, they warn Steven not to enter the cornfields next to their house.

Meanwhile, Steven hears news of the notorious Manson Family and their gruesome killing spree. He develops a morbid fascination with the murderous cult, and at the same time he can’t help but be drawn into the mysterious cornfields. Eventually he enters The Fields, where he makes a terrible discovery. Then, menacing noises begin haunting the family from outside at night and soon turn to violence. Though Steven’s family tries to protect him, whatever’s lurking in The Fields is about to make their lives a living nightmare.” READ MORE

Are you picking up anything this week? I’m skipping purchases this week and trying to watch all the Starz movies in my Netflix Instant queue before they expire on March 1st. READ MORE
