[Blu-ray Review] Does ‘Apollo 18′ Take Off Or Crash Land

There weren’t too many people arguing with me when I reviewed Apollo 18 this past September during its (technically successful) box office run; there’s a guy on Twitter who seems more defensive of it than any of its own filmmakers, but otherwise the consensus was that the movie didn’t work. The found footage aspect was a terrible fit for the setting and story, and even with a barely feature length runtime, it was too slow and its scares too minimal to compete with the other big mockumentary films (the Paranormal Activity series, Rec and its remake, etc). Does it fare better at home on a second go around? And more importantly, does the Blu-ray’s extensive collection of deleted scenes and alternate endings hint that this was once a much better film?

The answer to both is a very VERY soft “yes”. Knowing that the movie was a pretty dull affair took out the initial “When is something going to HAPPEN?” frustration and allowed me to just accept the movie for what it is: an ambitious but deeply flawed attempt to meld the found footage approach with, well, the damn moon. On paper it actually sounds pretty awesome/intriguing – a secret lunar mission, 16mm film shot by the astronauts that has been recovered by some conspiracy website, etc. Plus, I was sort of charmed by the filmmakers’ handicap – here they are one of the most expansive locations in the universe, and yet they’re limited to a cramped module and its immediate surroundings. On top of that, they’re limited to showing everything through the lens of dated camera technology – no zoom lens, no endless digital tape to let a camera record all night, not even real portability with the camera. ‘Jaws’. Blu-ray. August 2012.

 Jaws. Blu ray. August 2012.

Easily the most important news of 2011 is The Digital Bits landing early word that Universal Home Entertainment is slotting Steven Spielberg’s classic 1975 summer blockbuster Jaws for a Blu-ray release on August 14, 2012. Spielberg told AICN earlier this year that the release (thankfully) won’t be amended (like he did with E.T.) in any way leaving in all wires and other visible bruises.

They’ve also been told that at least some of the sequels may be released on Blu-ray on the same day, including Jaws 3D on Blu-ray 3D.

In other brief HD news, they also report that Universal is working on plans to release a Blu-ray box set of the classic Universal Monsters films in time for Halloween 2012! AWESOME. READ MORE

[Review] Double Down On ‘Hostel: Part III’

hostel320611 [Review] Double Down On Hostel: Part III

Arriving on home video next Tuesday is Hostel: Part III, the direct-to-disc sequel that franchise creator Eli Roth had nothing to do with. Even though it pales in comparison to Roth’s brilliant predecessors, Part III is a perfectly good time that’s great for one of those “what the f*ck should we do?” nights…

Other than some direct-to-video acting, budgetary constraints, and a few lackluster kills, ‘Hostel: Part III‘ stands on its own. It’s that perfect late night, last minute decision of a film that will entertain you and your friends as you down Taco Bell and gallons of Mountain Dew.”

[Set Report] Hostel: Part III Delivers An Even Darker Sin City

I arrived in Detroit to find it a ghost town. A major American city, emptied of people, skeletal skyscrapers jutting blankly against the callous sky. I was there to visit the set of Hostel: Part III, the upcoming direct-to-DVD sequel which arrives in stores two days after Christmas.

This time around, the setting was relocated from the strange and barbaric Slovokian village of the first two films to the more familiar confines of Las Vegas, also barbaric but in its own, distinctly American, way (the production was planning on shooting in Sin City for a total of four days following their departure from Detroit)… READ MORE

[Blu-Ray Review] Stieg Larsson’s ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Trilogy: Extended Edition (Canadian Release)

The cinematic incarnation of late Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy has never been fully embraced as a whole. It’s hardly unwarranted considering the sequels are a notch below production (not surprising since they were intended for television) and story-wise compared to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The problem is that the film on its own feels complete despite hinting at its central character’s very dark backstory. Some things are best left a mystery to avoid shattering the very qualities that made the material so compelling to begin with. When I caught up with The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest during their theatrical run, my apprehension proved to be all too accurate. They are bound together by the pulpier, continuous storyline which makers each film unsatisfactory on their own.

Initially, I was dreading sitting through all nine hours of this extended edition since I didn’t think much of the latter two. Much to my surprise, the Dragon Tattoo trilogy in its television format totally works as a separate entity to its theatrical counterparts. The sequels especially, are better served when presented as a singular property. I wouldn’t dispose of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Blu Ray since its theatrical form is still a satisfying experience. This Extended Edition is an entirely different beast which should be solely looked upon in how it’s intended to be; Stieg Larsson’s Millennium. READ MORE

Horror In Your House: December 13th, 2011

Horror In Your House: December 13th, 2011

This week’s releases features the long awaited Blu-ray of the original Fright Night, but act fast because only 3,000 copies are available. Of course, that release coincides with the remake featuring Colin Farrell which is also out in various formats. One of my favorite bits of info is that both the original and the remake opened to around 7 million in theaters the first weekend. But in 1985, a movie ticket cost $2.75 and the film opened on 1,500 screens. In 2011, the average ticket was around 10 bucks and the remake opened on 3,000+ screens. Suck (pun intended) on that, remake that no one asked for.

In other news, the one time lost minor cult film, Intruder is finally seeing blu. That’s good news all around, especially for fans of things made by the people responsible for all things Evil Dead. Check out the rest of the releases and have a great week. READ MORE
