Brad Anderson Makes 911 Call For Slasher ‘The Hive’!

The Machinist, Transsiberian and Vanishing on 7th Street helmer Brad Anderson has come on to replace Joel Schumacher as director of Troika Pictures’ thriller The Hive, writes Variety.

Set against the backdrop of a 911 emergency center, fast-paced suspense pic follows a 911 operator who must face her own fears in order to save a teenage girl from a serial killer.

AFM ’11: Brad Anderson Reteams With Christian Bale on ‘Concret Island’!

We’ve learned that Filmax International, the company behind Sleep Tight and the [REC] franchise, is will be producing Concrete Island.

The big news is that Brad Anderson (Transsiberian, The Machinist, Session 9, The Vanishing on 7th Street) is set to reteam with The Machinist star Christian Bale on the adaptation of the best selling novel by J.G. Ballard.

Scott Kosar (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Crazies, Amityville Horror, The Machinist) will pen the screenplay that’s described as a twisted adaptation of “Robinson Crusoe,” where the story’s protagonist, Robert Maitland, a wealthy architect, finds himself stranded in a manmade ‘island’ (a section of fenced-off wasteland in the middle of a motorway intersection) between the Westway and M4 Motorway in West London, forced to survive on only what is in his crashed Jaguar and what he is able to find. Another Potential Brad Anderson Project Goes ‘Unsound’

*Update: Chris Edwards to direct.

It’s sort of insane how little Brad Anderson (Transsiberian, The Machinist, Session 9) works, considering he’s a genre favorite and delivers pretty damn good stuff (more recently The Vanishing on 7th Street).

We learned this morning that Anderson could be getting behind the camera next year for Unsound, a $10 million indie project that’s being kept under wraps.

All that is know is that the horror thriller was penned by Matthew Ross and Chris Edwards and features an “all in a never-before-seen original screenplay.”

Jonathan Shukat and Kevin Frakes produce for PalmStar Entertainment.

TAnderson is also attached to All Lost Souls, The Living and the Dead and Jack.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Vanishing On 7th Street’

Dear everyone that hates Vanishing On 7th Street,

We’ve seen eye to eye (… well, probably) on many things in the past – we gleefully grimaced at zombies being killed to Queen’s `Don’t Stop Me Now’ in Shaun Of The Dead, got extremely creeped out by May, and collectively face palmed during the entirety of Platinum Dunes’ Nightmare On Elm Street remake – but you seem to have a strong distaste for Brad Anderson’s latest film. Actually, that’s not right. Let me rephrase that: you vehemently despise this flick. And I, for one, am sort of baffled.

Interview: ‘Vanishing on 7th Street’ Director Brad Anderson!

Now playing On Demand and screening in limited theaters on March 18th, Brad Anderson’s Vanishing on 7th Street (review) tells the story of a small group of individuals who hole up in a Detroit tavern after the rest of the population seemingly vanishes overnight, leaving only their clothes and other personal items behind. When the daylight begins to wane and soon vanishes completely, they realize that the darkness itself is out to consume them. Recently B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen got on the phone with Anderson, who has previously helmed such creep-fests as Session 9 and The Machinist, to discuss his latest creation. In the process he talked about his reasoning behind keeping the cause of the apocalyptic phenomenon in the story a mystery, creating the eerie “voices” of the shadow creatures, and how shooting in the city of Detroit in some ways mirrored the fictional situation created for the film.

Interestingly, Brad Anderson first received major industry attention not for directing a horror film but rather a romantic comedy entitled Next Stop Wonderland, which debuted at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Miramax Films following an intense bidding war. His next film, the time-travel romance Happy Accidents starring Marisa Tomei, added a little genre flavor to his resume, but it wasn’t until 2001 that he would enter the horror arena in a big way with Session 9, a deeply unsettling film about an asbestos removal crew plagued by bizarre occurrences while working in an abandoned mental hospital. He followed up that low-key chiller with 2004′s The Machinist, starring Christian Bale as an insomniac literally wasting away to nothing, and later the Hitchcockian thriller Transsiberian, starring Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer.

His latest film, the apocalyptic horror Vanishing on 7th Street (now playing On Demand and debuting in limited theaters March 18th) goes perhaps darker (in a visual sense, anyway) than any of his previous movies, in its story of a small group of individuals attempting to survive a malignant darkness that’s threatening to consume every human being on the planet.

Vanishing on 7th Street (On Demand)

In Theaters February 18. An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain – surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night (Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo and newcomer Jacob Latimore) each find their way to a rundown bar, whose gasoline-powered generator and stockpile of food and drink make it the last refuge in a deserted city. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself, and only the few remaining light sources can keep them safe. As time begins to run out for them, darkness closes in and they must face the ultimate terror

Here’s an alternate plot crunch: Following a mysterious blackout, most of the population vanishes into thin air. As the remaining survivors converge in a small tavern to figure out what happened, the darkness returns to claim them one by one.

Liev Schreiber, Sam Jackson Possibilities for Brad Anderson’s ‘Jack’

We’ve learned of some new casting possibilities for Brad Anderson’s serial killer thriller Jack that’s been delayed after a planned August shoot. We’re told that Liev Schreiber (Scream, The Omen, Wolverine, Repo Men) has been offered the lead role of ‘Jack’, with Samuel L. Jackson (Snakes on a Plane) in negotiating for ‘Pete Chandler’. No word on what this means for John Cusack who was originally cast way back in May. Penned by David Venable, the film centers on a doctor who rehabilitates and ultimately falls for an accident victim with memory loss, unaware that he is actually a killer. Anderson directed Session 9, The Machinist, Transiberian and the forthcoming Vanishing on 7th Street.

Session 9

An asbestos abatement crew wins the bid for an abandoned insane asylum. What should be a straightforward, if rather rushed, job, is complicated by the personal histories of the crew. In particular, Hank is dating Phil’s old girlfriend, and Gordon’s new baby seems to be unnerving him more than should be expected. Things get more complicated as would-be lawyer Mike plays the tapes from a former patient with multiple personalities, including the mysterious Simon who does not appear until Session 9, and as Hank disappears after finding some old coins.
