Movie commercials offer us a great service; they not only show us which upcoming movies look good, but also which ones to avoid. And if one looks closely, they often reveal more than intended about the film in question. In honor of this profound art, I give you TRAILER TRACKS, an examination of upcoming movie commercials: What they say, what they don’t say, and what they say on accident about the product being sold to you, the excited chump.
Today’s Entry:
Branded (Dir. Jamie Bradshaw, Alexsandr Dulerayn)
While at the San Diego Comic-Con, Bloody Disgusting stringer Evan Dickson had the chance to sit down with Branded co-director Jamie Bradshaw to talk about their sci-fi thriller that takes on advertising in a big way. Last night the latest trailer premiered in the massive Hall H, but it now available online for your QR pleasure!
The film starring Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor, Ingeborga Dapkunaite and Max Von Sydow “is a dark and mind-bending sci-fi thriller into a surreal, dystopian society where mega corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man’s quest to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.”
The below trailer includes new unique QR codes with additional codes embedded in the film’s website, social pages, trailer and other materials. QR codes enable consumers with a smart phone and a reader app to scan a code in the Branded trailer or other marketing materials which will reward them by offering a deeper glimpse into the film’s alternative universe of out-of-control brands, consumer gluttony and insatiable materialism through exclusive image and video content. Overall the Branded marketing campaign will include 100 QR codes in all. Unlock them all!

As mentioned yesterday, the new San Diego Comic-Con issue of EW has hit stands and it’s got a couple of cool looks at some of your most anticipated films from the event. First up is a newly added clean look at Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi suited up for action in Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, opening July 12, 2013.
Next up is the still from Resident Evil: Retribution that puts Alice’s (Milla Jovovich) in the face of a zombie. The battle against Umbrella continues September 14 from Sony Screen Gems.
Also included in the batch of stills are new looks at the third season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” (returning this October) cast, Sony Pictures and Neill Blomkam’s sci-fi epic Elysium (March 1, 2013) and Roadside Attraction’s Russian thriller Branded (September).
Directors Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn are taking on advertising in a big way with their indie Branded (aka Moscow 2017, aka The Mad Cow), which Roadside Attractions will be releasing in theaters this September. The comparisons to They Live that I’ve been hearing seem to be apt, at least in terms of the film’s subject matter.
Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, the Branded poster includes 4 unique QR codes with additional codes embedded in the film’s website, social pages, trailer and other materials. QR codes enable consumers with a smart phone and a reader app to scan a code in the trailer or other marketing materials which will reward them by offering a deeper glimpse into the film’s alternative universe of out-of-control brands, consumer gluttony and insatiable materialism through exclusive image and video content. Directors Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn are taking on advertising in a big way with their indie Branded (aka Moscow 2017, aka The Mad Cow), which Roadside Attractions will be releasing in theaters this September. While Roadside typically releases absolute garbage, the below trailer for the sci-fi thriller is pretty incredible — and interactive. If anything, it looks like a reworking of the classic They Live, jam-packed with aliens and brainwashing.
The below trailer includes 97 unique QR codes with additional codes embedded in the film’s website, social pages, posters and other materials. Feel like an alien invasion movie that actually came out of nowhere (like an alien invasion)? Try Branded (aka Mockba 2017). The Russian production has Leelee Sobieski (Joy Ride), Jeffrey Tambor (‘Arrested Development”) and Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist). Nice, huh?
Per Variety, “Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to sci-fier “Branded” and plans a nationwide theatrical release this September. Lionsgate has home entertainment, VOD and other ancillary rights through their output deal.” In a remarkable piece of news that doubles as a metaphor for today’s film industry the report also states that the film was “co-written, produced and directed by marketing executives Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain.”
The film is, “A dark and mind-bending journey into a surreal, dystopian society where corporate brands have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive. One man, Misha’s (Ed Stoppard), passion to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead to an epic battle with the hidden forces that really control our world.”
