Roundtable

In “Roundtable,” Vaughan tries out yet another tweak on the oft-revised King Arthur legend. His spin, more “Ghostbusters” than “Excalibur,” revolves around Merlin assembling a bunch of modern-day knights to battle a resurrected ancient evil, only to discover that today’s knights are all washed-up athletes, cowardly scientists or Academy Award-winning actors.

Review: ‘Saga’ #5

Saga steamrolls back onto into the scene this week with a heart wrenching issue that’ll have you feeling some serious empathy. As always BKV and Fiona Staples use their skills to create an amazing comic, the amount of talent it takes to pull this book off is beyond measure. After every issue, I let myself believe that there is no way the book can be topped, until I pick up the following issue…This month is no different. READ MORE

Review: ‘Saga’ #9

It’s that time of the month! Saga drops with another outstanding issue brought to you by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples, and Image Comics. “Saga” is easily my favourite series to drop this past year, every issue brings new elements, plot twists, and, best of all, world building. Anyone who has read an issue knows that BKV is next level when it comes to the all-encompassing world he’s created and Fiona works magic with the pencil. Issue #9 is just another example of their combined prowess. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] George Shunick’s List of the Best Comics 2012!

So, I’m ashamed to say 2012 was not a terribly adventurous year for me when it comes to comics. For better or worse, I ended up sticking with relatively mainstream comics. That said, there were a number of excellent offerings from both DC and Marvel, and these comics are absolutely capable of competing with more creator-friendly work, as long as they’re in the right hands. At any rate, there was some serious competition this year for the number one spot, but ultimately there can only be one! Curious to find out if what you’ve been reading is the epitome of the medium or crap not worth even a momentary glance? Read on, and see for yourself… READ MORE

The Past, Present, and Future of Image Comics

In a year that included DC’s New 52, “Before Watchmen”, and Marvel’s “Avengers vs. X-Men”, 2012 represented more than just big business in mainstream comics. This year, Image Comics celebrated its milestone 20th anniversary. Against heavy competition from the Big Two, Image Comics, the indie publisher that could, stood its own ground in the industry with bestselling series like “Saga”, “The Walking Dead”, and “Chew”. While not all books thrived at Image, the company that was founded on creator-owned rights managed to maintain a strong voice against the traditional spandex adventures of leading publishers. Review: ‘Saga’ #8

Week after week I find myself shivering with anticipation for a new release of Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga, thankfully this week brings issue #8 and I find myself “wowed”, once again, by the uniqueness of the book. This issue further expands Vaughan’s intergalactic environment, coupled with a dramatic backstory for our unlikely couple. It’s insane how well this book mixes genres. Vaughan’s imagination is incomprehensibly vast to be able to take a “Lord of the Rings” idea, mix it in with “Dune”, and cap it all off with a little bit of horror. READ MORE

[NYCC 12] Speculative Fiction and Image Comics Panel

Image Comics just held their sci-fi panel featuring creative teams of Brian K Vaughaun and Fiona Staples, Brian Wood and Mind Doyle, as well as David Hine, Joe Harris, and Glen Brunswick. Though the official title for the panel was “Wondrous Worlds, Fractured Futures: Speculative Fiction and Image Comics”, it really just covered their sci-fi and fantasy books. The creators spoke in depth about their work, and their views on science fiction in comics. READ MORE

Review: ‘Saga’ #5

Chapter 4 of Brian K. Vaughan and Image Comics, “Saga”, ends with the main character, Marko, drawing his sword and saying, “We fight.” This may seem like a pretty tame line to start off a comic book review, but what follows in chapter 5 of “Saga” is Fiona Staples illustrating Marko’s berserker rage as he slices and dices his way through an entire squadron of “feathered fucks.” Issue #5 is a worthy addition to what is already shaping up to be a masterpiece. 5 Skull Review: ‘Saga’ #4

Every issue of Saga has been great, but issue #4 is the best yet in terms of character development. The cover of this issue features The Will, and fittingly much of the issue is devoted to developing his character, along with Alana and Marko. If you haven’t been reading “Saga”, you should be, but you should also know that The Will is the most badass character in the book. Firstly his name consists of a capitalized “The”, and secondly it was revealed in issue #3 that he totally got it on with that severely gnar female bounty hunter. What happens in issue #4 cements his badassery, as well as makes the five finger palm of death from Kill Bill look like child’s play. READ MORE

Review: BKV’s ‘Saga’ #3

The plot thickens to a new level of juicy in Image Comics’ 3rd issue of Saga, a startling twist of dark science fiction and fantasy. This book is no doubt my favourite of the year thus far, which says a lot since I’ve been knee deep in comics.Saga evokes nostalgic memories of Firefly mixed with the some old school Lord of the Rings and it doesn’t get any better than that! The first issue was a bit tough to get into for those not antiquated with BKV, only because of the sheer randomness of the world. But as the story continues to develop, it’s easier to relate to the oppressive power struggle that seems to make BKV’s strange world turn round. Without a doubt this book is not for the faint of heart but I seriously doubt anyone trolling Bloody-Disgusting is one of those people. READ MORE

5/5 Skull Review: ‘Saga’ #2

The second issue of Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga hit stands earlier this week and, as a follow up to the sold-out first issue, it doesn’t disappoint. In my review of the first issue of “Saga”, I commented on the immensity of the world the reader is thrown into. While it felt a bit overwhelming, Vaughan’s masterful writing successfully ignites the fuse on the plot and shoots his new comic into hyperdrive, even while presenting multiple story lines.
