Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) have dedicated their careers to debunking bogus paranormal events and teaching how these supernatural occurrences can be faked. But the pair are thrown for a loop when world renown psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement and attracts a great deal of publicity. Even with the help of Buckley’s star student and new paramour (Elizabeth Olsen), the skeptics are experiencing some genuinely strange phenomenon when they look into Silver. The team may have to accept the possibility that Silver is the real deal and coming straight for them. READ MORE

Writer/Director Riley Stearns shot Magnificat, a short starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing (2011), Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and Stephen Tobolowsky (Memento, Groundhog Day, Buried), over one weekend this past summer. It’s now complete and is well worth checking out. It’s a quiet, suspenseful and creepy 13 minutes.

Emergo, a haunted house flick directed by Carles Torrens and written by Buried and Red Lights helmer Rodrigo Cortes has been picked up by Magnolia and will hit VOD prior to a theatrical run.
Per Variety, “Magnolia has acquired U.S. rights to “Emergo,” the latest genre pic from Rodrigo Cortes and Adrian Guerra, the team behind Sundance players “Buried” and “Red Lights.”
Using the same release strategy as on “Melancholia,” Magnolia will bow “Emergo” via its Magnet label with the early VOD release timed for April 27 and theatrical six weeks later on June 1… The English-language ‘Emergo’ turns on a team of high-tech parapsychologists who investigate anomalous phenomena in an old, eerie house.
‘Emergo’ cost under $3 million, aided by a Spain shoot, with Barcelona doubling for California, and 90% interiors, Guerra said. Nevertheless, it uses 200 vfx, while 90% of effects are physical, he added.”
An earlier press release we reported on in November stated “All types of cameras are used – video, HD, 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm – as we follow scientists’ footsteps through a haunted house, casting a frightening spell over the audience. Brace yourself for this terrifying experience!”
Sounds like it could be interesting. It’s also encouraging that the film managed to get through post production with the whole “90% practical effects” thing intact.
Kai Lennox, Michael O’Keefee, Gia Mantegna, Rick Gonzalez, Fionna Glascott, Francesc Garrido all star. READ MORE
After two and a half months of pre-production in Barcelona and Toronto, Buried director Rodrigo Cortés is officially back behind the camera with his psychological horror Red Lights. Toby Jones (The Rite, Harry Potter), Joely Richardson (Event Horizon, “Nip/Tick”) and Leonardo Sbaraglia round out the cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, and Elizabeth Olsen.
As translated and cleaned up from the press release: In the film two paranormal fraud investigators, the veteran Dr. Margaret Matheson (Weaver) and her young assistant Tom Buckley (Murphy), study the diverse phenomena of metaphysics with the intention to demonstrate its fraudulent origin. Simon Silver (De Niro), a legendary psychic, perhaps the most famous gifted of all time, returns after thirty years of mysterious absence to become the world’s greatest challenger to orthodox science and professional skeptics. Tom begins to develop a dense obsession to silver, whose magnetism is enhanced dangerously with each new manifestation of inexplicable dark phenomena.

A few years back, I was lucky enough to catch a performance of Nevermore, a one-man stage show starring Jeffrey Combs as the depressed and poverty-stricken poet, Edgar Allen Poe. I never had the opportunity to see something like that before, but it was a beautiful, minimalistic experience, and definitely one that has stuck with me – in fact, I find myself hoping it’ll make it over to my neck of the woods, but that’s bound to never happen. There are very few films that attempt to pull off what the Gordon/Paoli/Combs collaboration did, with only Sleuth and Duncan Jones’ Moon springing to mind initially (even though both have more than one actor in them). Buried, directed by newcomer Rodrigo Cortés, is probably the closest I’ve seen that emulates a similar experience, immersing the audience in terrifying – and somewhat plausible – situation without a traditional use of breaking down the fourth wall, and boasts a performance by Ryan Reynolds that would have him nominated for an Oscar in a perfect world.

Inception star Cillian Murphy has joined another mind-bender as he will join Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro in Buried director Rodrigo Cortés’ Red Lights, which turns on a psychologist, played by Weaver, and her assistant whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (De Niro). Cortes told us “I’m working on a script on a paranormal theme about how the brain does not give a true picture of reality.” While Murphy is now known as the star of Batman Begins and Inception, he broke on the horror scene by starring in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Sunshine.
