[TV] Durand Moves From ‘Night’ To ‘The Strain’

Wow, this one’s moving right on along, isn’t it? Kevin Durand (pictured above; “Lost”, Dark Was The Night) is joining the TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain” with Carlton Cuse (“Bates Motel”) as showrunner. Per Variety, Durand will play “ a second-generation Ukranian-American, a once-solitary rat exterminator who eagerly joins the war against vampires who have invaded New York.”

As reported yesterday, Corey Stoll (“House Of Cards”) will be playing the lead of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather. The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation

The book is “a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.”

Del Toro will direct the pilot (he co-wrote the script with Chuck Hogan).

Corey Stoll (picture above; “House Of Cards”) will be playing the lead of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather in the TV adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s vampire novel trilogy “The Strain”. Carlton Cuse (“Bates Motel”) is still on board as showrunner and the project might pass the pilot stage and go straight to series (the same happened with “Bates”).

Per Deadline, “The project already has a full writing staff in place churning out scripts, and FX has committed $500,000 to creature creation.”

[TV] “Bates Motel” Renews Its Lease For A 2nd Season!

A&E’s “Bates Motel” will be sticking around for at least a little bit longer. Maybe a lot longer. The network has renewed the show for 10 additional episodes set to air next year.

The premiere of “Bates Motel” garnered 4.5 million total viewers and 2.5 million adults 25-54 and 18-49, based on Live+7 viewership, making it the most-watched original drama debut in the key demos in the network’s history.

A&E’s “Bates Motel,” from executive producers Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) and Kerry Ehrin (“Friday Night Lights”), is a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho and promises to give viewers an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ psyche unravels through his teenage years. Fans will have access to the dark, twisted backstory of Norman Bates and how deeply intricate his relationship with his mother, Norma, truly is.

I still havent’ gotten around to A&E’s premiere episode of “Bates Motel,” yet (I was pulled away from it right as I was starting) so I’m going to have to take the official word on this one.

“For those that are still catching up on the series Norman Bates discovers a sketchbook hidden underneath the carpeting in one of the rooms at the Bates Motel. Inside, he finds Chinese writing and manga sketches, immediately becoming captivated by the drawings. Norman, along with his classmate and friend Emma Decody, begin to dig deeper into the story behind the sketches and stumble upon a bigger mystery than either of them could have imagined. As the season unfolds, more characters from the manga are introduced and more secrets exposed; this book is the story of one of those characters.”

I hear the season premiere of “Bates Motel” last night was great, so I’m about to mosey on up to this link (totally legal courtesy of A&E) and check it out. The episode is titled “First You Dream, Then You Die.” Let’s discover it together!

The series stars Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Departed”), Freddie Highmore (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Finding Neverland”), Max Thieriot (“Disconnect”), Olivia Cooke (“Blackout”) and Nicola Peltz (“The Last Airbender”). Season one also co-stars Nestor Carbonell (“Lost,” “The Dark Knight Rises”) and Mike Vogel (“Pan Am”).

… I don’t know. Literally. I’m not going to watch the first six minutes of this because everything I’ve seen from “Bates Motel” actually looks pretty good to me so I’m saving myself for an entire episode. I can wait a week. But if you can’t wait, it’s right here for you.

After finally seeing the trailers for “Bates Motel”, I’m actually pretty excited. Normally I’d pass on posting something like this, especially since the image is so small, but it seems like an important moment in the life of Norman Bates – his introduction to taxidermy,

Is this the first actual footage from “Bates Motel” that we’ve seen? Going through the posts, I think it might be our first look at stuff actually culled from an episode. I actually like the mother/son stuff here. Not so hot on the dayglo rave stuff though. Who knows? Maybe the show makes it work?

TV: A&E’s ‘Psycho’ Prequel “Bates Motel” Goes To Series

A few months ago A&E announced it was in early development on “Bates Motel,” and that it would serve as a prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock 1960 classic Psycho. The plan was to offer an understanding into how Norman Bates’ psyche developed and would tell the back story of the film’s killer. The audience was to learn of how his mother and her lover damaged him, transforming him into serial-killing motel owner.

And that plan looks like it’s going swimmingly. Apparently their faith in exec producer Carlton Cuse (formerly the showrunner of “Lost”) is stronger than expected because they’ve committed the project to series without seeing a pilot. Per Variety, “Cabler has ordered 10 episodes of the Universal Television series while forgoing a pilot. A&E’s faith in not asking for pilot first comes in the form of former “Lost” showrunner Carlton Cuse, who will exec produce with Kerry Ehrin.”

“We are proud to be partnering with Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin on their thrilling reinvention of one of the most compelling characters in cinematic history,” said A&E president Bob DeBitetto and exec VP of programming David McKillop in a joint statement. “It’s a provocative project from two of the best storytellers in the business and we’re looking forward to getting started.”

TV: Carlton Cuse No Longer Lost, Checks Into Bates Motel

Just when we’d forgotten about A&E’s “Bates Motel”, a potential series from Universal Television for A&E that would serve as a prequel to the Alfred Hitchcock 1960 classic Psycho, we get a jolt of news that reminds us that this project is very much alive. Carlton Cuse has joined the Roy Lee and Mark Wolper produced series.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Carlton Cuse, who along with Damon Lindelof executive produced and acted as showrunners of ABC’s “Lost”, is boarding A&E’s “The Bates Motel”. If the show is picked up to series, Cuse will executive produce and oversee the writing and production what is being envisioned intially as a six-episode “event” that would lead to additional seasons. It also marks the first “genre” TV project for Cuse since his acclaimed run on “Lost”.”

The show, “aims to tell the story of a young Bates and how his life with his deranged mother and her lover unhinged his mind, eventually turning him into a serial killer. It has been described as a cross between “Twin Peaks” and “Smallville”.” READ MORE
