Paradise Lost

Written in 1667, Milton’s epic poem revolves around the fall of man and the classic battle of good vs. evil, telling along the way the story of Satan/Lucifer, the angel who tries to overthrow God, and the temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The project tells the story of the epic war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, and will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D.

Casey Affleck Producing Starring Vehicle ‘Boston Strangler’

Warner Bros. has acquired Boston Strangler, a thriller pitch about the desperate search for the murderer who terrorized the Boston area during the early 1960s. Kevin McCormick‘s Warner-based Langley Park shingle will produce, and the pitch was bought from Casey Affleck, pictured above, and fellow Boston native screenwriter Chuck Maclean. Affleck hopes to star as one of the detectives who were part of the Strangler Squad responsible for solving the crime, and he will be exec producer, reports Deadline.

The script will be written by Maclean. With a tone similar to Se7en and Zodiac, they will cover the most haunting unsolved serial murder story in U.S. history. While Albert DeSalvo was convicted of crimes unrelated to the Boston Strangler case, the public was spun to believe he was the man behind the 13 gruesome murders of women in Boston for over a year and a half. There is still belief that more than one killer was involved, and that DeSalvo was a pawn in a bigger conspiracy. The movie follows an ambitious detective who is willing to risk career and life in a race to bring down the most notorious sexual predator of the day, while battling a political cover-up by corrupt politicians and lawyers trying to save their careers. Boston pols were desperate for a conviction; the early murders centered on older women living alone, but when police found a 21-year old victim, the public panicked. Soon, guns and door locks became scarce in Boston and pressure grew to end the hysteria by locking up someone.

ParaNorman

In the comedy thriller, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Mr. McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

[BD Review] While ‘ParaNorman’ Is Visually Revolutionary, It Lacks In Story…

In theaters August 17, I caught an early screening of Focus Features’ ParaNorman, the latest 3-D animated genre pic from the team behind Coraline. Carousing the Web it appears people are really digging this flick, only I wasn’t as entertained. The stop-motion flick looks absolutely astounding, but the story lacks depth, creativity and laughs.

[It's a] remarkable piece of art that, utilizing state of the art 3-D, take stop-motion animation to an entirely new level. The eye candy that LAIKA has delivered is revolutionary and so advanced that it makes Sony’s classic Monster House look like absolute crap.

[And while] the animation itself is stunning, what lacks is the screenplay. Butler penned the story that is gummed down with incredibly bad jokes, obnoxious characters, and a bland moral that’s worked around the classic “Frankenstein” tale.

You can read the review in its entirety by clicking here. We’d love to know your thoughts, so write your own reviews when it hits theaters on August 17.

Legendary Pictures Pulls Plug On ‘Paradise Lost’

The legendary battle between good and evil has been postponed… this time it’s forever.

After a start date bump back in December, Legendary Pictures has officially pulled the plug on Alex Proyas’ big-budget adaptation of John Milton’s 17th-century poem Paradise Lost due to budget issues, says Variety.

Bradley Cooper, Ben Walker, Casey Affleck, Djimon Hounsou, Rufus Sewell, Camilla Belle, Diego Boneta and Callan McAuliffe were slated to star in the film, which Legendary initially pushed from January to June.

Insiders close to the production told Variety that while Proyas’ vision of the movie was great, the technology wasn’t quite there, and the filmmakers couldn’t reduce the budget enough to satisfy Legendary.

Vincent Newman was set to produce Paradise Lost with Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Project was designed to showcase eye-popping aerial warfare, and Warner Bros. was onboard to distribute.

Decision frees up the schedules of its stars, who are expected to be in high-demand — particularly Cooper and Walker. READ MORE

Ballooning Budget Halts ‘Paradise Lost’ Production

Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures has halted plans to begin production early next year on Paradise Lost, the epic-sized Alex Proyas-directed film about the battle between good and evil that is inspired by the John Milton poem.

Bradley Cooper had been set to play Lucifer, Benjamin Walker to play the archangel Michael, and Diego Boneta playing Adam and Camilla Belle Eve, with a host of other actors lined up for the action epic.

The site reports that that the film isn’t scrapped; rather, Legendary’s Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and producer Vincent Newman will continue developing it to rework a budget that had passed the $120 million mark by 10% or 15%. The picture has crewed up for an Australia shoot and the talent and below the line is learning about the postponement right now.

In the case of Paradise Lost, there is so much green screen work and VFX that the budget looked to be getting unwieldy. They will try to rework those costs and possibly get the film into production by the late spring or early summer. READ MORE

Second Trailer for ParaNorman A Horror Fans (Animated) Wet Dream!

While the teaser was already quite impressive, the full trailer for LAIKA and Focus Features’ animated horror comedy ParaNorman is off-the-wall incredible. Shared after the break, the hysterical new trailer is jam-packed with horror goodness that shows obvious love for the genre (you can tell directors Sam Fell and Chris Butler are huge Evil Dead fans). IMO the creepiest portion of the footage is when Norman realizes that his deceased Grandmother is watching him in his room (at all times). He’s a growing boy, he needs his privacy (commencing grossed out skin crawl).
