[Random Cool] A Revealing Look At Practical Effects In The New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie!

So there’s been a lot of back and forth about whether or not the new Evil Dead is 100% CGI free or if they’re just using a tiny bit here and there for things like wire removal and color grading. I was expecting them to use a tiny bit of it to cover up small stuff that considering we’re in the age when CGI is used to remove blemishes and occasionally slim down the star of a romantic comedy… but maybe not?

Now we’ve got a cool look at a gag that doesn’t cover up its practical nature in the Evil Dead trailer. Thanks to reader DJBlack1313 for pointing it out. You’ll notice a cleaned up version of it above (Edit: The image above is from the first red band teaser – the one inside is from the newer full length) and inside you can see a version of it that made it to the trailer where the tube is visible.

The Fede Alvarez-directed remake stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore and Jessica Lucas. It hits theaters on April 12th, 2013. Be sure to read PART ONE and PART TWO of my set visit!

Mama

[BD Review] Brad Is Mixed On ‘Mama’

Universal releases Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror thriller about a group of feral children raised by something sinister, today, January 18th. Brad (Mr. Disgusting) saw a lot to like in the film, but ultimately couldn’t make it past the film’s extreme overuse of CGI and some muddled character development.

We see Mama way too much, there are too many effects shots in general, and for whatever reason Muschietti felt the need to have Mama performing acrobatics like bending backwards off walls and twisting into inordinate shapes. Some of the most haunting and jump out of your seat scary moments are subtle and quick, not long winded and showy… The most disappointing aspect of Mama is that the original idea is fantastic, and some of the scares are out of this world effective. But ultimately poor writing, editorial and effects decisions transform it into a long winded, almost faux horror movie.

This Gotham City Impostors Trailers Shows Us We Can All Be Good. Or, Evil.

Gotham City Impostors is a 1st person shooter, yes, and FPS, that is coming out on the PC, Playstation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. You basically get to dress yourself up like either super heroes, or villains, and go to town on each other with tons of fun weaponry. Check out the excellent trailer below.

Sure, it’s no Arkham City but it should be a lot of fun for a smallish price tag upon its release in early 2012. You’ll be able to pick it up for $14.99 on the PSN and PC, and 1200 Microsoft Monopoly Bucks on Xbox Live. READ MORE

‘Ghostbusters’ Fan Art Takes DreamWorks Animation Approach

We’ve all seen plenty of fan art, whether it’s at conventions or even on the B-D forums. I’ve seen all sorts of stuff that ranges from terrible to great, but you got to give it up for fans who put their own spin on their favorite characters just because they love them so damn much.

Italian graphic artist Fabrizio Fioretti got put in the spotlight earlier today when /Film shared a few of his Ghostbuster pieces, which have the cartoony appearance of recent DreamWorks Animation titles like How To Train Your Dragon (and maybe it resembles the character renders seen in the Wii version of the Ghostbuster game released a few years back, too). Fioretti claims he made them “no particular reason” and he’s just a huge fan.

The Venkman portrait can be seen beyond the break. Check out the rest of the Ghostbusters and more of Fioretti’s work on his website.
