[DVD Review] ‘Ghoul’ is a Fun TV Movie

Reviewed by Patrick Cooper

Put the kids to bed, pal, because this ain’t your regular made for TV coming of age movie! Ghoul, produced by the Chiller network, is the rare kinda film that’s about a group of kids and actually treats them with respect. They’re fully formed characters dealing with real-world problems that’ll quickly age any kid. And as if their miserable home lives weren’t reason enough to go grey at age 12, there’s something in their little rural neighborhood that’s killing people. READ MORE

[DVD Review] ‘Chiller: The Complete Television Series’ Unearthed By Synapse

Where does Synapse find this stuff? As an enormous fan of televised horror anthologies, sometimes I feel like I’ve seen it all. But I was completely unaware that Chiller even existed until the 2-disc set showed up on my doorstep. Unearthed from some presumably dank U.K. archive in the bowels of Yorkshire, all five hour-long episodes hit U.S. soil for the first time this month. Broadcast in Britain during the spring of 1995, this mostly-forgotten series was birthed in the middle of a renowned horror drought, which may explain the delayed release. [Fantastic Fest '12 Review] Brad Thinks ‘The American Scream’ Could Be A Little Louder

Director Michael Stephenson made a big splash a year or so back with Best Worst Movie, which looked at the enduring Troll 2 fanbase. Now he’s back to put his magnifying glass over another horror-centric lifestyle choice in The American Scream. The documentary is playing the ongoing Fantastic Fest in Austin and has made a big splash with its depiction of American families who prepare, and launch, their own local haunted houses.

And now Brad (Mr. Disgusting) writes in with his review. He feels like the doc goes through the numbers a bit but is ultimately wholly worthwhile. “While it lacks punch, there’s a profound sense of joy in watching these hard working individuals get the much-deserved spotlight they long for. Many want to be remembered, and Chiller has landed them an eternal place in horror lore.

TV: Cast In Talks For Chiller’s ‘Dead Souls’

Back in February we reported that Chiller is gearing up for production on its next direct-to-TV movie.

Remains director Colin Theys reteams with Synthetic Cinema and Chiller for Dead Souls, a telepic adaptation of Michael Laimo’s novel about a teen who inherits his crazy preacher father’s mysterious house. John Doolan, who also adapted Remains, will penned the feature.

Bloody Disgusting learned exclusively today that Jesse James (NOT “the” Jesse James, rather an unknown) is in talks to topline as “Johnny Petrie,” with Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses), Magda Apanowicz (Slither, The Butterfly Effect) and Jaiden Kaine (Hellbenders ) also in talks to round out the cast. Nothing has been signed.

Shooting begins this April in Connecticut.

Synthetic Cinema and Chiller’s first was an adaptation of the Steve Nile’s (“30 Days of Night”) graphic novel Remains featuring Lance Reddick (“The Wire”, “Fringe”) and Grant Bowler (“True Blood”).

On his 18th birthday, Johnny Petrie learns he was adopted when he inherits a farm in Maine, abandoned for the 18 years since his natural family died at the hands of his father, the local preacher. Eager for a new life, he leaves home to start over in his new dwelling. However, as he digs into his past, he soon uncovers the horrifying details of his father’s questionable teachings. In …a frightening revelation, he also learns that his return has revived decades-old forces trapped in the home and sets in motion a heart-stopping finale to a ritual that already claimed the lives of his family.

Dead Souls is adapted from the novel by Bram Stoker Award finalist Michael Laimo. READ MORE

[Slamdance '12] Review: ‘Ghoul’ An Above-Par Adaptation With An Unusually Rich Plot!

GhoulLand12412 [Slamdance 12] Review: Ghoul An Above Par Adaptation With An Unusually Rich Plot!

Chiller TV’s made-for-TV production, Ghoul, premiered last week at the Slamdance Film Festival. Yesterday we announced that it had an air date for Friday, April 13th. And today we have a review!

John Marrone writes in from Slamdance, “As so often explored by Moderncine creations such as ‘The Girl Net Door’, ‘Offspring’, or ‘The Woman’ – what worse beast is there, than man? Genre crawlers looking to see a corpse eating beast or rape scenes in the tunnels beneath the graveyard should take note – this is not a hard-R film… With children engaging problems that would traumatize adults, and an acoustically driven soundtrack by Sean Spillane, Ghoul feels very much like a less offensive version of something between ‘The Woman’ and ‘The Girl Next Door’.

Brian Keene’s Ghoul is based on a horror novel of the same name, which follows a group of young friends who risk their lives to stop a rash of disappearances in their town. Directed by Greg Wilson and penned by William M. Miller, the adaptation stars Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”). Wilson also directed Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door. The feature is part of Chiller’s new original productions. The film was produced by MODERNCINÉ’s Andrew van den Houten (The Woman, The Girl Next Door) and Robert Tonino. READ MORE

Comic-Con Poster For Steve Niles’ ‘Remains’

Premiering this fall is the John Doolan-penned adaptation of Steve Niles’ Remains, which was originally a five-issue comic series IDW put out back in 2004 (I think I have the trade paperback floating around here somewhere…).

The flick, which will air on Chiller, was directed by Colin Theys and tells the story of a blackjack dealer and exotic dancer who survive a nuclear accident that turns everyone else into zombies.

I can’t remember much about it aside from the basic premise, but one would have to assume they’re not the last people on earth considering Kieron Dwyer’s Comic-Con poster features more than a few hard-boiled characters on it. Check past the break for the new art, which you’ll presumably be able to grab next week if you’re heading out to San Diego.
