Who Woulda Thunk? ‘Chillerama’ Plays Better Without ‘Werebear’!

ChillLand120211 Who Woulda Thunk? Chillerama Plays Better Without Werebear!

When I saw Chillerama at the Hollywood Forever cemetery over the summer it was with grave (sorry) disappointment that I had to report that it hadn’t exactly blown my skirt up. Despite liking some elements of the film I had to give it a 4/10 Review.

It was a bummer because I typically like Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s output. And even though I especially dug Adam Rifkin’s segment, I can’t just review the bits I like – I have to review the whole film. Movies are more than the sum of their parts, which is an axiom that can take a harsh turn when you have a part as rancid as “I Was A Teenage Werebear“. A gangrenous leg can kill an entire man after all. But what happens if you remove that leg? Your patient lives.

Earlier this week, I caught a screening of Chillerama at USC in which the “Werebear” segment was omitted. The result was markedly better. Since it was a screening for students it was decided that only the segments of the directors who were able to attend would be shown – to ensure more time (and a more relevant line of questioning) for the Q&A afterwards.

I have to say that, as I suspected, the whole thing just feels and flows better. Without the additional segment, I was no longer too worn out and exhausted to enjoy the merits of the film.

Now, it’s still not Green and Lynch’s best work. It’s a side project movie and it feels like one. But at least now the cheap gory thrills that it has to offer can be taken more in stride and it’s something that you and your buddies can crack open a few beers and watch without feeling like an endurance challenge. “Zom-B-Movie” benefits greatly from the omission since we’re not required to spend too much time away from its characters and “The Diary Of Ann Frankenstein” feels more like a simple pleasure rather than something you watch while recovering from the wrath of “Werebear”. “Wadzilla” remains the high opening note that it always was. It’s also worth noting that movies like this just weren’t meant to be two hours long – 90 or so minutes is far more manageable.

Now this version isn’t available for purchase, but seeing it reinforces a hunch I had back when I wrote our chopping list. If you’re a fan of these guys, it’s safe to pick it up on Blu-ray. Just make sure your remote is handy for the one (or two) clicks it takes to make the viewing more expedient. READ MORE

Head to the ‘Chillerama’ on VOD This Thursday

While still passing through limited cities, those of you with VOD can check out Image Entertainment’s horror anthology, Chillerama, on various video-on-demand and movies-on-demand platforms starting Thursday, September 29th. Bloody D hit up the premiere earlier this month and was not a fan of the hyped splatterfest featuring the works of Adam Rifkin (“Wadzilla”), Joe Lynch (“Zom B Movie”), Tim Sullivan (“I Was a Teenage Werebear”) and Adam Green (“The Diary of Anne Frankenstein”).

It’s the closing night at the last drive-in theater in America and Cecil B. Kaufman (Richard Riehle, Bridesmaids, Hatchet) has planned the ultimate marathon of lost film prints to unleash upon his faithful cinephile patrons. Four films so rare that they have never been exhibited publicly on American soil until this very night!

Check out the trailer inside and make sure to write your own reviews to tell all of Bloody what YOU thought.

[Review] ‘Chillerama’ a Lackluster Drive-In Experience

The long awaited horror anthology from Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin and Tim Sullivan, Chillerama, made its US premiere last week at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery – check out our red carpet interviews – and is currently on a theatrical road show (dates here).

The movie features a bunch of this crowd’s regular players (Joel David Moore, Kane Hodder, AJ Bowen) and genre vets alike (Richard Riehle, Lin Shaye, Ray Wise). It also features copious gore, nudity, innovative hijinks and some really interesting… ideas. I’ll say this, you’re getting more or less exactly what the trailer is promising.

Unfortunately it also features one of the single worst anthology installments I have ever seen. It may be the worst 26 minutes of anything I’ve seen or experienced this year (and it’s longer than any other installment in the film). It comes early in the movie and is such an utterly draining experience that it’s almost impossible to enjoy the rest of the film.

Chillerama will be on DVD/Blu-ray on November 29th. Hit the title for the review.

[Special Report] Adam Green, Joe Lynch And Adam Rifkin Speak From Amongst The Graves At ‘Chillerama’ Premiere!

Late last week I attended the US Premiere of Chillerama at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. After a tranquil hour milling about the interior of the main mausoleum (I’d obviously seen screenings in the cemetery but had never been inside the crypt before), sipping something called `Chill Out” (actually kind of tasty, but I like weird sour stuff), it was time to hit the red carpet.

The next hour would not be so tranquil. The red carpet was about 20 feet long (very, very small) and was EXTREMELY crowded. In short, it was utter chaos. The line started out orderly, but then Tim Sullivan (director of the Chillerama segment “I Was A Teenage Werebear”) started ‘directing’ the actual press event. He was pulling people in and out of interviews with various outlets and shuffling the order of who would walk where. Pretty soon it descended/ascended into chaos. Fun and exciting with lots of cool people, but chaos nonetheless. In fact, Tim was so busy hopping around I never got the chance to interview him. Maybe next time!

I did, however, get to spend a few minutes with the other three other directors of Chillerama. Adam Rifkin, Joe Lynch and Adam Green were all incredibly gracious and spoke with genuine enthusiasm about their love for this film, their upcoming projects and the horror community in general. Joe Lynch (despite being punched in the groin during our interview by Joel David Moore) also had some surprisingly fond comments for the MPAA.

Because the press line was so hectic I actually had to chase Green down a bit for my final interview of the night – right before he took the stage to introduce the film. He seemed incredibly grateful to be there (after a full day on set shooting “Holliston”) and his appreciation for his success and his fans was palpable. It was clearly a big night for him, and his fondness for the genre was legitimately infectious. It was a nice primer before I joined the audience to watch the film.

I also snagged a few quotes from Joel David Moore (“The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein”, Avatar), Lin Shaye (“I Was A Teenage Werebear”, A Nightmare On Elm Street), AJ Bowen (“Zom-B-Movie”, You’re Next), Kane Hodder (“The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein”, Friday The 13th Parts 7-10) and Derek Mears (Friday The 13th 2009, MacGruber).

Without further ado I present – in the order in which they appeared at the event – some of the highlights of the red carpet. Hit the jump to check it out!

FrightFest ’11: Stare Into the Empty Eyes of ‘The Woman’

Probably the most controversial film of the year is May director Lucky McKee’s The Woman (review), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film features some intense abuse to the female protag, which resulted in one man freaking out in the theater lobby.

Gearing up for release later this year, the Angela Bettis, Pollyanna McIntosh and Sean Bridgers starrer will be screening as part of the Film4 FrightFest in London. Check out a newly released still.

The Woman is the last surviving member of a feral clan that has roamed the Northeast Coast for decades. When the last of her family is killed in a battle with the police, The Woman finds herself alone, severely wounded and vulnerable. Unfortunately, she is now a far too easy prey for local hunter, successful country lawyer and seriously disturbed family man Christopher Cleek. With his twisted set of ideals, Cleek decides to embark upon a deranged project – to capture her and “break” The Woman – a decision that will soon threaten the lives of Cleek, his family and The Woman.

FrightFest ’11: ‘Detention’s First Bloody Imagery

You’ve heard quite a bit about Joseph Kahn’s mindf*ck of a slasher, Detention, which David Harley raved about out of SXSW. While the film is more of a pop culture slap-in-the-face, the slasher starring Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Parker Bagley, Alison Woods, Walter Perez and Carrie Wiita is quite violent. Behold a bit of proof in the first blood image below.

‘Detention’ tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it’s further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they’ll have to cut out of detention if they’re to stand a chance at saving the world.

It will screen at the upcoming Film4 FrightFest in London.

FrightFest ’11: Zom-B’s Bleed Blacklight Gore in ‘Chillerama’!!

Announced to be screening at this summer’s Film4 FrightFest in London, Bloody scored a pretty rad new still from Image Entertainment’s Chillerama, the forthcoming anthology featuring directors Joe Lynch, Adam Rifkin, Adam Green and Tim Sullivan.

The image released is from Joe Lynch’s (Knights of Badassdom, Wrong Turn 2) segment entitled “Zom-B-Movie”, where “a final night of nostalgia unfolds at the Kaufman Drive-In before it is torn down, where owner Cecil Kaufman (Richard Riehle, pictured inside) is screening obscure B-Movies from his private collection to an audience of local geeks and line-quoting movie lovers. Little do the unsuspecting cinema-loving patrons know, but tonight something is horrifically amiss at the Last Drive-In…” It reminds me of Mike Mendez’s The Covent from 2000.

The anthology featuring the works of Adam Rifkin (“Wadzilla”), Joe Lynch (“Zom-B-Movie”), Tim Sullivan (“I Was a Teenage Werebear”) and Adam Green (“The Diary of Anne Frankenstein”) is said to be released this Fall.
