[This Day In Horror] Happy Birthday To Composer Danny Elfman!

Today in horror we celebrate the birthday of composer Danny Elfman and recognize the music and compositions that he has brought to our genre! Elfman’s work has been heard in all but two of Tim Burton’s films (Ed Wood and Sweeney Todd) as well as such films as Clive Barker’s Nightbreed, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and more. He also composed the main themes for The Simpsons as well as the “March Of The Dead” in Army Of Darkness.

Born May 29th in Los Angeles, California, Elfman became known to many people through the rock band Oingo Boingo, who were known for their heavy Halloween-themed concerts. His first film score was for 1980′s Forbidden Zone, which was directed by his brother, Richard Elfman. Since then, Elfman has gone on to score for some 90 films and shows, has been nominated four times for an Academy Award (he has never won), and won 33 various other awards, including the Richard Kirk award, which is given to composers who make significant contributions to film and television music.

Join me below in listening to some of my favorite cues from Danny Elfman as we wish him a very happy 59th birthday! READ MORE

[Voice Of Horror] Clive Barker’s ‘Lord Of Illusions’

A few days ago I sat down and rewatched Clive Barker’s Lord Of Illusions, a film that I feel doesn’t get enough credit with many horror fans. I was first interested in this movie when I saw the poster for it at my local movie theater. Something about that image enticed me and it was always on my mind. When I was old enough, I rented the VHS and sat down to watch this supernatural-horror-meets-film-noir that I’d been eager to see for years. Much to my chagrin, it was awful. Full of plot holes and jarring edits, it was a mess of a film. Being a big Clive Barker fan, I was crushed. READ MORE

DC Comics Demands That Boom! Change The Name Of Clive Barker’s ‘New Genesis’ Series

We recently announced the coming of Boom! Studios new comic series from Clive Barker, intended to be called New Genesis (article here). Apparently this knotted the panties of the folks at DC because New Genesis is the name of the planet of the New Gods in the DCU. However, it’s important to note that the term “New Genesis” has apparently not been trademarked, says Bleeding Cool.

What will the series name be now? Your guess is as good as ours. READ MORE

Nine Inch Nails’ “Happiness In Slavery” Mixed With Hellraiser II Visuals

There is something very violent yet erotic about the music of Nine Inch Nails. Mixing harsh, electronic tonal elements with organic flavors, there might not be a more perfect movie franchise to compare it to than the Hellraiser series. That’s why the below video of Nine Inch Nails “Happiness In Slavery” (taken from the Fixed EP) mixed with footage and clips from Hellraiser II: Hellbound seems to work so beautifully. Given the stamp of approval from Clive Barker himself, it’s definitely worth checking out.

“Happiness In Slavery” landed at #2 in my Top 10 Nine Inch Nails Music Videos list. READ MORE
